Why did the CW military leaders elect to take their lead from the defeated British Redcoats? ie walking into battle in formation with pagentry. Music provided both cadence and communication, but flag-bearers beside men walking shoulder to shoulder invited carnage. The Redcoats complained that the colonists shoot from cover and wouldn't show themselves fairly. Why take the lead from those we defeated 60+ years earlier?

@RememberApostrophes as impractical as it looks, thats actualy the most effective way to use old breach loaders. their most effective when used all as one combined attack. but yes, if i was on the front ranks, i would shit my pants knowing i would most likely be one of the first to go. the americans used tactics that were considered "guerilla," and wouldent work in a conventional war that the british were used to fighting. but as americas army grew, it went conventional by the end of the war.

@Shafeone oh I'm well aware of the hardships. our unit does week long tacticals in the winter time nothing like a forced march in rough terrain after a 5 hour battle. but at the same time as reenactors we do get many luxuries that soldiers didn't have back then and a sense of a romanticized battlefield. we can see the what drew those aristocrats to watch the battle of manassas and have a truer understanding of lee's quote "it is great that war is so terrible else we should grow too fond of it"

That painted a pretty good pic of what civil war combat was like in that last scene. Add some artillery shells and case shot and you've got it for sure. That rebel yell is something else. Can be quite intimidating the first time you hear it in battle. But I like the big deep toned manly "Hurrah" of the yankee solidiers.
