I don't care if this song is live or studio it is gives me goose-bumps...it makes me feel happy, sad, reflective, thankful...all at the same time...music,body, mind and soul...that is what a great song should be and do...
beautiful song, but that asshole from the audience who shouts out shut up and sing it,,, please give me a moment with that jerk. Jonathan Edwards was so cool to ignore that idiot. I was part of the audience back in the seventies when he did the college campuses... , was a parting song for a relationship once.
I have loved this song since I was a young teenager in the 70's! I'm glad I got to see Jonathan Edwards in 1981, at a place called The Chance, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. I was a student at the time at SUNY New Paltz! The concert was magical! I did make one mistake-I tried to take a picture, and the bouncer almost took my arm off, and threatened to break my very expensive Minolta X-G1! Thank God, he only took the film! Peace, BobbyK
@helenschmelen You're obviously not a fan. It's not just about his music, it's about him as a person, and how many can relate to him... through his stories, music, rants, etc... If that requires him speaking, so be it.
@kmcgullam91 Truly I am a fan but of the music. It's like Slipknot and Pearl Jam lots of other artists let who they are get in the way of their art. I want to know who you are through your music. I'm not trying to be their friend. It would be like an artist standing next to a painting and talking. Does that make any sense? I am interested in your opinion.
@helenschmelen I'm not trying to be his friend either, does it stop anyone from listening to him ramble? No. People that see him or listen to him are fans of the musician, not just of his music. That's like telling me you bought an album just for a single song, and out of the many times you listened to that album, you only liked the song itself, and had no appreciation for the artist that created it? If you're interested to know who the artist is, IDK, try actually listening to him speak...?
@kmcgullam91 thanks4replying. (i didnt mean u were trying 2 b his friend) this gets to the heart of something that i have been trying 2 figure out why it bothers me. I was a fan of 2 bands (Sinch and Saliva) who changed their sound. I wondered why. About this time Eddie Vedder came under fire 4 his politics which made me wonder at what point does who a musician is interefere with his music or is it always inseparable? I just think 'conversation' interferes with the enjoyment of the music. ?
@helenschmelen It's totally situational. That depends on what is being said in conversation and whether or not it relates to their music. And yes, sadly that's how others view people, for their actions, no matter if they have music that tells about themselves otherwise. But how does this apply to Jonathan Edwards? He's always neutral and merry spirited, especially in his tales. His stories reflect his music and vice versa, that's why it shouldn't matter if he speaks. He is his music.
@kmcgullam91 I guess how it applies 2 Jonathan Edwards is just as an example of musicians conversing between songs. As far as what he's saying, I guess that doesn't really matter (2 me) either. The only analogy I can make is if I want 2 look at a painting but u put a snapshot in front of me 1st. It gets in the way? I think an artist's product is separate, although I might say his music is him (the reverse) &that's the only part of him I want 2 hear. I'm no closer2 understanding why it bothers me
@helenschmelen Ah, I seem to understand your point. For me, I just find solace in who Jonathan Edwards is, he plucks an emotional chord in my heart, whether it's w/ his music or his tales. He's a brilliant person, and it's interesting to learn his story if you haven't done so.
honkeytonkangel you took me through the 70's so sweetly and you come up on a sweet summer breeze and fill my ear with the lovlyest of memories...thank you Jon
honkeytonkangel you took me through the 70's so sweetly, and your voice comes up often on a sweet summer breeze and sweeps me far away to the lovliest memories...thank you Jon
*cry*.... "just beyond... Someone I'll never see again... something he said one night... Sometimes.... (*cry*).. my memories are... in motion. Wishing he was here.... my love.
For those interested . The tuning is open D with the capo on 3rd fret. The tab/chord is very simple #1) open. #2) 5th string 2nd fret and #3rd string 1st fret. 3)slide up 2 frets. then back to #2 then open again. Just do a simple Travis style picking and your good. The incredible voice is a little harder to pull off.
I have an Mp3 player with a zillion tunes on it and it was playing away on shuffle as I drove down the highway in an Ontario blizzard. This song started playing and I had never heard it before (or at least I thought). I couldn't believe what I was hearing. His voice just blew me away as it rang over the simple guitar melody. It was a version from the Telluride Bluegrass festival Reflections Vol #1 Cd. The sound quality is excellent on the cd version.(It seems I bought the LP in '72)Thanks
I agree -except you left out Croce. Who happens to be the only one of the afore mentioned who wrote all his own songs. I have a vid somewhere of me doing "that's what our life is" - I'll see if I can find it and post it.
That's cool. I'm a big fan of all 3 also...just hated to see J.C. left off the list..lol. J.B. and J.T. also wrote and co-wrote alot of tunes made famous by others. Next time you hear Take It Easy by the Eagles, listen to the lyrics - thats J.B.
