Never dug the song or the direction Styx turned when the album came out, but I give Dennis ALLOT of credit for battling CFS & still performing live. NOT an easy feat!
One element of progressive rock music supposedly put forth by Ruch back in the 70s was that the concert should replicate the concept and vibe of the LP version.

I went to their concert last night. It was...well no words can describe it, but I was hoping very much that they would play this one. Guess they didn't feel it would be right without Dennis singing it : |
i went to the Styx, REO Speedwagon, and .38 Special concert this past summer and Tommy Shaw was saying how only Dennis Deyoung liked the song, so once he left, they didn't play the song anymore
Dennis Deyong was basically kicked out due to a creative fued with the rest of the band. Tommy Shaw never got along with him and you basically had the Dennis Deyoung stuff and the more prog rock stuff Tommy Shaw wrote. When Deyong left the group he took the stuff he wrote and Styx continued basically with Tommy Shaw's material. Dennis Deyoung continues to do Mr. Roboto as a solo act but Styx no longer performs any of his material which the rest of the band never liked anyway.
@captslappy you are wrong. tThe current Styx lineup still performs Lady, Come Sail away, Grand illusion and several Dennis songs. An they fail miserably at capturing the magic of Dennis. Styx without Dennis = fraud
@mrjimmy123456 Oh really? Good to know. It was my understanding that they only did Tommy Shaw's material now. I agree that Dennis was Styx. Thanks for the info.
His voice is in amazing shape. A bit deeper, but compare bands like Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, or Kansas 20-30 years later. DeYoung is even older than them, and can kick their ...
Hell, this is live. Most bands can't throw out something this close to their grand studio version, let alone 25+ years later.
Actually, replicating the grand studio version 25 years later is much easier because the technology solves a lot of synching and countless other problems.
Not to take away from the achievement here... Dennis has managed to faithfully reproduce his concept in all its pompous overblown majesty. It helps that he had a band that is paid to play it, unlike his former band mates who found it to histrionic even by Styx standards, and hated it.
Great song - great performer. Dennis DeYoung = Styx. He was one of the founders and it was his songs that put them on the radio. The guys who are using the name Styx now owe their careers to Dennis!

The irony is Genesis was an art band in 1973 and became a ballad/hit machine by 1983. Styx did the opposite route. Dennis should stuck to Lady and Babe.
I love Dennis and Styx, and I went to the Mr. Roboto Tour in 1983 in Florida, But you can tell this is not Styx, and what kind of venue is he playing at here where the crowd talks through his performance...
I love seeing him perform this again, but it's rushed and sloppy..
Hi Highlander38, I wish I had better recording means but I had to use my photography camera. Considering his age, Dennis performed way beyond my expectations. It wasn't a million dollar performance like Fleetwood Mac's last night, but to me, everything was great for 10 bucks which was not because he was cheap, but I think because he was doing a favor to the folks form his hometown. Seeing his high school sweetheart wife Suzanna De Young on stage was also great treat :) Take care, Volkan
Ummm... in general? Or on this song? Because he's the original singer. Sounds pretty decent, even 25 years later after the song's inception. To each his own though!
i forget which band member, but shortly after mr.roboto was released one of the band members quit because he thought the band was to theatrical and he still thinks that.
Hello pinkpigluver, I am glad you didn't miss this history making music event in Chicagoland. Thanks to my friend Rob, I feel very lucky that I didn't missed it either :) Cheers, Volkan
More modern drums, please. :-). True nostalgia for folks as I and fir DD to gesture as a robot; all part of the song.

It's such a gay, hokey song...definitely the biggest TURD that Dennis ever wrote. It sounds so good live too, eh? Haha
