I agree - either Batman or James Bond. I notice there are some ska songs from this period that also use that twangy spy guitar sound. But this is my favourite, partly because it's about a Siam cat (as the English would say).

definitivamente una de las mejores canciones de pink floyd al igual que el disco the piper at the gates of dawn, látima que sea tan poco valorado... Syd Barrett era pink floyd
hmm... well thats certainly debateable. Thats nothing against Syd, hes amazing. I just think that Pink Floyd had its own style and Syd had his, and they were able to mature when they split.
Q: Some of your songs seem rather obscure - like Chapter 24 on Piper.
SB: Chapter 24...that was from I Ching, there was someone around who was very into that, most of the words came straight off that. Lucifer Sam was another one - it didn't mean much to me at the time, but then three or four months later it came to mean a lot.
i think that guy at 0:40 is tripping. "damn it's fucking hot in here. i need to take my shirt off. oh shit? what are all these cars? damn, look at these cars!"
it is sad to see a friend being destroyed by drugs, i have that experience.Sadly Barret was a victim of the nieve ignorance of his entire generation, that makes him a martyr but not a genious. The fact is that he couldnt be able to develop his talent to that level like the other band members and its ridiculous that people praise him like some kind of musical hero or god. He was a leading figure, a very cherised friend and a strongly charismatic character, but not a great songwriter or musician.
i wont comment about what u think of syds talent as a songwriter, because it's a matter of taste &theres no point in disaggreeing.but as for the other part, you talk about things you have no idea and yet sound as if you know everything. dealing with someone's psyche, mentality, even "reality" and things as such which are obscure and difficult to determine (plus without knowing the details of the case-and you dont, nobody here does)can and will lead you to false assumptions (ie calling him a victim)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Well most facts about Syd Barret's medical condition are well doccumented by testimonies of the people around him, footage and pictures of him being synthomatic and of course, the evident decadence of the musical "talent" he barely managed to achieve: he was a retard. Of course the details of his case are confidential as all clinical records. Maybe i didn't make myself clear enough in the last comment, he was a victim of himself. Poor guy killed his own talent.
Why did you call Syd Barrett a retard? It sounds to me like you just don't like his music. First of all, read what you wrote aloud to yourself, It's kinda choppy and you contradict yourself at one point. Secondly, Syd Barrett obviousley had enough talent to become the poster child of the entire Psychedelic Music era, so don't question the man's talent knowing that fact. And lastly, Schizophrenia and retardation are two different things, judging by your text, you rode the small bus to school?
Maybe you dont know it, but Barrett was never diagnozed schizophrenia. What he had is severe brain damage, u know? when the brain cells massivelly die. Thats what happens to LSD abusers: they basically get their CPU formatted. In severe cases they have to be taught how to speak and go potty again. Im not saying thats Syd's case, but not being able to perform as he used before he overdozed is a clear symtom of retardation. And you are right i dont like his music, its plain boring.
minarv, that's actually very shallow what you just described... when you loose your mind because of drugs, then you are a victim. period. everything else you said is as purely hypothetical like the writings you judge.
it's the classic neurotic mindset: "oh! i'm so totally unexplainable and deep! i'm so not hooked!" fact is: syds musical genius stopped working because he didn't control his habit anymore. >> VICTIM.
since i'm such a neurotic egotistical person, as you describe, my ego needs to make clear that i dont "thumbdown" people when I disaggree with what they say, I didnt thumbdown LYMBO2006 either. probably some syd fan gave him thumbsdown for calling syd a retard.
apart from that, I wont argue with you coz my ego doesnt like your attitude. :)
I met Syd in the late 60's and he was no where near destroyed by drugs, and you know something the drugs he took helped him write new work (LSD and Marijuana). And also I really do not care if you persons do not belive me I was the original soundman for The Deep a british psychedelic band. Oh and when I used to run and mix sound at a live concert I would always eat some acid to open up the mind to new sounds. Oh and I would like to know what you mean by "nieve ignorance of his entire generation"
Well back in the late 60 the short and long term effects of drug abuse were known but very little spread among people.Nowadays you get a drop of LSD in a piece of paper, back then it was entire spoons. That i mean:they didnt really knew what they were getting into;they tough that was the way they were going to change the world by everyone opening their minds and perception and lving each other in peace and harmony. But well they failed to change the world and left many casualties like Syd.
Dude, are you like remedial he didn't die from that he passed from complications from diabeties and pancreatic cancer, but did you guys know it also said under occupation "retired musician" to me that would be like getting spit in the face
bad mistake, huh? but think of a world that did NOT take LSD or get into all those drugs. how far bake would we be? for example, pink floyd would have never been as it is today!
syd was an awesome writer and the drugs didnt kill him iit was hes health like DONOTRESUSITATE said and cool u actualy met him im 16 and id love to meet him if he hadnt died
That is,ofcourse, he wrote(past tense);Rest in peace Syd. Also, any money would go to his estate-all of his royalties go to fund music education for children. He was such a sweet man.
Syd writes such cool riffs that other bands can't keep their hands off of them. Listen to this song at 1:45-ZZ Top used it for "sharp dressed man"! They should pay Syd for sampling his music(I guess people could get away with that in the past-that is lame!).
Not to sound cruel, but that woman could never be with Syd. At this point in his career he only had the most beautiful girlfriends. From what I've read,he had more gorgeous ladies than he could handle(no pun intended- HA HA)

i didn't realize until recently how great a live guitarist syd was.
thanks to youtube, now i know.
this studio work is very artistic--synesthesia through guitar. real cat scratch sound, slashing, like razors.
geekorthodox9 2 years ago 12
Good spot-geeko-I just recently discovered how to get that intro twang,by tuning
the low E string very loose ,then let it bounce against the pick-up.
0:46 some of these slashing sounds you can get by pulling a string (just like you pull a bow) and ,again let it bounce against the guitar pick-up.0:27
Timeless song this,it gets better with the years ,and still you hear new things.
This song is just perfect, also these driving drums, and how Rick Wright colours the song.
