Hi! I've got a pair of turntables which I got yesterday. I will probably sound like a completly retard right now but I'm a beginner in this kinda stuffs, to the question - when I bought the turntables I got a program called "Mixvibes" with it and I just wondering, You need to have a sound card right? like a USB sound card or something? Maya 44 or something...
Hello, I am a girl stepping into the world of scratching and some videos I have watched have completely intimidated me to the point where I'm thinking 'I'll never be able to do this!' but coming across your tutorials have really helped me get a grip on the co-ordination and techniques even if they are just the basics to start. We all have to start somewhere & being able to learn and pick up what you are teaching here gives me hope that one day I will be just as sick as the pro's so thank you :)
@carlasupafly keep dreaming pork chop, its never going to happen....if you have to watch videos on how to "touch a fkn record" then id stick to the day job....=D
In this video, he just pressed the start/stop button on the turntable. But something to press a button and make a sound.. It is called a sampler, some mixers have samplers built in. But when you "press a button" to make a sound, you do that with a sampler, no matter what type of sampler. He did not do that at all in this video. There is nothing on a vinyl turntable that will make a sound when you press a button.
u know something bro.....u r a wonderful dj, i have downloaded ur each & every tutor video....u r like tutor to me, am ur big fan......as d matter of fact...2 months ago, i have started to djing.....thanks to ur advises, am giving my best to become a dj......i work hard for 16 to 18 hrs per day.....god bless u....take care.....
@TDKOnafets for a beginners set you wanna go much cheaper than that, you can get an adequate set for 1000 used, possibly less, and then once you make your fist deal you should sell and get the good stuff

@dieselmac94 make sure you use a slip mat between the record and the platter so that it doesnt grip the platter.. and also will save your records aswell because it wont be sliding on the other side
is the record you're scratching on in the video just a break vinyl?
new to turntables but kinda been watchin some of your vids and now im thinkin of pickin up the stanton dj lab 2 package and seein how i like messin around with tables.

use the crossfader to 'cut' in and out. when you pull the record back, move the crossfader to the 'off' position, then move the record forward and move the crossafader at the same time to 'on' so you hear it.

@JoeHHO i would like to use vinyl to..but i have all my music on cds and my ipod its easier to just buy a cdj and use it on that. i can get a song easy as of the internet put it straight on a cd and put it on the cdj. its not like a record where you have to go to the right shops for what records you want and they might not even have them.
i havent got a cdj yet im not sure if i should get one or whether i should get vynl.
@kandal23 i just can confirm bobbylincoln, and add that u can buy the most vinyls online, where u normally can find anything pressed on vinyl, from rare oldies to new stuff :]

But its a hell lot easier to do it on a pc program (even if you beatmatch by yourself) as you have the whole waveform of the track in front of you so you can know where all the drops are and when the track breaks down etc
@DavidHoly So Tiger Woods isn't very good because he's got a bigger clubhead and a faster ball, Roger Federer isn't as good because he's got an over-sized raquet head with tighter strings, Lewis Hamilton is crap because he has more technology in his car than Ayrton Senna...........get over yourself man. The technology matters not. Still gotta be learned and the result is what matters. You can still screw it up royally with any medium.
Look i totally agree with you that these people are the best with or without their equipement, but all i was trying to say is that playing on turntables requires a bit more practice and patience then with cds or pc programs. If you have a MIDI controller, set yourself a challange, turn off that monitor and try to play using your ears only. Artistic challenges cause growth & positive results.
@DavidHoly Yep gotcha. But only the absolute best and top of their tree could scratch well with their eyes closed. 99.9999% need that little mark on the record to show where the scratch sample starts/ends. The mark on the record is just replaced by the wave from on the screen. So there is no difference. There's a long queue of boring people trying to flame users of modern technology without basis. And you just joined the end of it.
@FruityLoopsNessify that is what i think. I don´t scratch and i mix house .. sure i would probably find it interesting to learn more ... but after 25 years djing ... i didn´t ever needed to keep a crwod dancing to my mixes
@FruityLoopsNessify 100% true a better set doesnt make you a better dj in any way what so ever it only helps once you know what your doing after years of practice
yo can anyone tell me about what type of turntable to get for scratching? I don't need a whole deck but just a little somethin do some scratchin at home. Also, how can I tell if a turntable is able to scratch or not? Can all turntables do it?, Is there even a differece? Thx
its not the turntable that does the scratch. its you. what u need to do a scratch without ruining the record and your needle is to get a diamond needle. u can get it at all dj shops i guess. i use concorde.
for a turntable, im not much of an expert but i know that Technics turntables are pretty good.
I wouldnt recommend a belt driven turntable, scratching may stretch or cause slack on the belt. But then again, Im not 100% sure. With Direct Drive Turntables the motor is directly connect to the platter, so I dont think there is any risk in breaking moving parts.
wow this is hot stuff , i actually remember the before technics and scratching days,in fact taking mechanism out of old turn tables so they dont auto return, fiting and on off switch. cutting ones own slip mats , ( you couldnt buy them )and splicing tape.

Computer DJs are real DJs. Hell man most mobiles use laptops now days and only carry CDs for backup. so before you go act like a jackass know what your talkin about.
clearly don't know what you're talking about lmao.. probably real small time dj's who can't afford vinyl are using laptops.. most big dj's use a laptop as a 3rd or even 4th deck in some cases, and for extra fx...
Clearly you dont know what your talking about. Big dj's dont use it as a 3rd or 4th deck. They are using "scratch live". it allows them to use vinyl decks but play mp3's from the laptop. This way they dont have to travel with 30 cratesof vinyl. Google "scratch live" to see for yourself.
GCURIA35 is correct, I use Serato Scratch Live! It basically allows me to carry ALL of my music with me on a laptop and I can play my songs as if they were real vinyl through the time coded vinyl or cd's.
Some shit DJ's however use other software which mixes beats for them and I hope they all die of cancer. There is no need for these type of dj's. May aswell use a jukebox!
currently using a dj controller, vci300, i think this is good for experienced DJs...but i would like to focus more on scratching, so i think my current hardware would be hard to practice with...
Hey Ellaskins thanks for postin the vids. Ignore all teh haters they just dont realize that beginners gotta cover all the bases before they can move on to more advanced or "real" scratching.
i think more quotable people in history have been teachers rather than djs or turntablists for that matter.....im just sayin. but i guess losers in their parents house deserve to criticize......
yer there is a wide variety of scratch vinyl available to purchase, check out some of these on google or online record stores, "DIRT STYLE DELUXE SHAMPOO BREAKS" "SCRATCHY SEAL BREAKS" "COP PORN BREAKS" "YEE HAW BREAKS"
On most record stores they usually have a section called "dj tools" check it out and have a listen. this sample that ellaskins is using can be found on pretty much every scratch vinyl in existence, you said you like hardcore, dj sy has his own records called "this is for the dj
never fail to impress will be practising this, is it best to start with a slower genre as i generally play hardcore lol, or i could just slow it down i guess
no mate from my personal experiece you should practice with all kinds of music, there are no rules just play around with different styles. and you said that you play hardcore just try doing what ellaskins is doing on here but to every other beat, ellaskins should be able to give you a better explanation
im a big scratch fan i do it pretty much all day and night, i love it. and from what ive seen your a good teacher, breaking it down to the nail biting beginners stuff. alot of djs like qbert etc. although amazing, dont really show you how to do it. they just kinda do it and then say thats called a flare or a chirp. ignore some of these fools on here mate you got good teaching techniques.
yeah! its like a famous book entitled: dj lesson for dummies. this is by far the coolest video ive seen here about dj-ing. i can say this because im a dj too. knowledge and skills are obtained little by little. just like you've said... practice! beginners can learn a lot from you.
Thanks for the tutorial. I've always wondered how scratching works. This is the true spirit of YouTube: sharing information and entertainment. Keep up the good work!
THIS QUESTION FOR NE1: Yall know how he mentioned how some DJ's put tape on their records to keep their spots? I was wondering, WON'T THE NEEDLE MESS UP WHEN IT runs over the tape or paper?
IS IT !!!!!!!!

the turntables send sound to the mixer, which sends them to an amplifier. the amplifier then sends the sound to the speakers, to your ears.
so yes, you need 2 turntables, a mixer, an amplifier/reciever and some speakers.

its hard to explain with text, but heres how i would explain basics:
use just one record with a sample that you like, try to get just a flat noise or similar (noramally at the very beginning or end of some records)
use the crossfader to 'cut' in and out. when you pull the record back, move the crossfader to the 'off' position, then move the record forward and move the crossafader at the same time to 'on' so you hear it.
now put another record on, and do what you was doing in beat

just move both hands at the same time, when you move crossfader 'on', move record forward, then move record back and move crossfader back to 'off' at the same time.
when you master this, you can change how you cut the crossfader in and out, try cutting it in and out to the beat, and then get faster and slower. when you can do this you will be pro ^^

@JoeHHO i would like to use vinyl to..but i have all my music on cds and my ipod its easier to just buy a cdj and use it on that. i can get a song easy as of the internet put it straight on a cd and put it on the cdj. its not like a record where you have to go to the right shops for what records you want and they might not even have them.
i havent got a cdj yet im not sure if i should get one or whether i should get vynl.
have any help for me>?
kandal23 1 year ago
@kandal23 If you buy Serato Scratch Live, you can use real vinyll and still play/control your mp3s....get the best of both worlds.
bobbylincoln 1 year ago
@kandal23 i just can confirm bobbylincoln, and add that u can buy the most vinyls online, where u normally can find anything pressed on vinyl, from rare oldies to new stuff :]

@JoeHHO real DJs don't watch tutorials on how to DJ.
dropoutnotbombs 1 year ago
@JoeHHO wrong, you´re a Dj when you rock the croud and make a great mix, no mather what you use!
FruityLoopsNessify 1 year ago 53
@FruityLoopsNessify
But its a hell lot easier to do it on a pc program (even if you beatmatch by yourself) as you have the whole waveform of the track in front of you so you can know where all the drops are and when the track breaks down etc
DavidHoly 1 year ago
@DavidHoly So Tiger Woods isn't very good because he's got a bigger clubhead and a faster ball, Roger Federer isn't as good because he's got an over-sized raquet head with tighter strings, Lewis Hamilton is crap because he has more technology in his car than Ayrton Senna...........get over yourself man. The technology matters not. Still gotta be learned and the result is what matters. You can still screw it up royally with any medium.
Noallegiance18 1 year ago
@Noallegiance18
DavidHoly 1 year ago
@DavidHoly Yep gotcha. But only the absolute best and top of their tree could scratch well with their eyes closed. 99.9999% need that little mark on the record to show where the scratch sample starts/ends. The mark on the record is just replaced by the wave from on the screen. So there is no difference. There's a long queue of boring people trying to flame users of modern technology without basis. And you just joined the end of it.
Noallegiance18 1 year ago
@FruityLoopsNessify that is what i think. I don´t scratch and i mix house .. sure i would probably find it interesting to learn more ... but after 25 years djing ... i didn´t ever needed to keep a crwod dancing to my mixes
contraelmundo 1 year ago
@FruityLoopsNessify 100% true a better set doesnt make you a better dj in any way what so ever it only helps once you know what your doing after years of practice
totalvauxhall1985 1 year ago
@FruityLoopsNessify hihihi... i think hier is a lot of people who dont know how to mix at vinyl or cdj just at pc programs

yo can anyone tell me about what type of turntable to get for scratching? I don't need a whole deck but just a little somethin do some scratchin at home. Also, how can I tell if a turntable is able to scratch or not? Can all turntables do it?, Is there even a differece? Thx
Spiegeltoothrhymes 3 years ago
its not the turntable that does the scratch. its you. what u need to do a scratch without ruining the record and your needle is to get a diamond needle. u can get it at all dj shops i guess. i use concorde.
for a turntable, im not much of an expert but i know that Technics turntables are pretty good.
kisvarazslo 3 years ago 2
I wouldnt recommend a belt driven turntable, scratching may stretch or cause slack on the belt. But then again, Im not 100% sure. With Direct Drive Turntables the motor is directly connect to the platter, so I dont think there is any risk in breaking moving parts.

fuck u save the vinyl tings!

You are the reason I bought a deck
1SockPants 3 years ago 2
wow this is hot stuff , i actually remember the before technics and scratching days,in fact taking mechanism out of old turn tables so they dont auto return, fiting and on off switch. cutting ones own slip mats , ( you couldnt buy them )and splicing tape.

They aren't DJ's.

Computer DJs are real DJs. Hell man most mobiles use laptops now days and only carry CDs for backup. so before you go act like a jackass know what your talkin about.
Soundtrackzz 3 years ago
clearly don't know what you're talking about lmao.. probably real small time dj's who can't afford vinyl are using laptops.. most big dj's use a laptop as a 3rd or even 4th deck in some cases, and for extra fx...
ninteh 3 years ago
Clearly you dont know what your talking about. Big dj's dont use it as a 3rd or 4th deck. They are using "scratch live". it allows them to use vinyl decks but play mp3's from the laptop. This way they dont have to travel with 30 cratesof vinyl. Google "scratch live" to see for yourself.
GCURIA35 2 years ago
GCURIA35 is correct, I use Serato Scratch Live! It basically allows me to carry ALL of my music with me on a laptop and I can play my songs as if they were real vinyl through the time coded vinyl or cd's.
Some shit DJ's however use other software which mixes beats for them and I hope they all die of cancer. There is no need for these type of dj's. May aswell use a jukebox!
djmattwilson 2 years ago
depends
do you use only a computer or do you have scrach live hooked up to your mixer?
NickMergold 3 years ago
currently using a dj controller, vci300, i think this is good for experienced DJs...but i would like to focus more on scratching, so i think my current hardware would be hard to practice with...
raerunnel 3 years ago
dude just forget all the that stuff and get some turntables and a mini mixer
NickMergold 3 years ago
Hey Ellaskins thanks for postin the vids. Ignore all teh haters they just dont realize that beginners gotta cover all the bases before they can move on to more advanced or "real" scratching.
DjMadEyez 3 years ago
whats the break called that you use in this clip?
mrpunt 3 years ago
i think more quotable people in history have been teachers rather than djs or turntablists for that matter.....im just sayin. but i guess losers in their parents house deserve to criticize......
DjAI505 3 years ago
hmmmm every other beat you say.... can you suggest a good scratching vinyl for hardcore?
ladybrock 3 years ago
you can get lp's known as breaks, these will have samples on them, great to scratch with. j
ellaskins 3 years ago
@ellaskins where do you get your records?
StringofBinary 1 year ago
yer there is a wide variety of scratch vinyl available to purchase, check out some of these on google or online record stores, "DIRT STYLE DELUXE SHAMPOO BREAKS" "SCRATCHY SEAL BREAKS" "COP PORN BREAKS" "YEE HAW BREAKS"
On most record stores they usually have a section called "dj tools" check it out and have a listen. this sample that ellaskins is using can be found on pretty much every scratch vinyl in existence, you said you like hardcore, dj sy has his own records called "this is for the dj
o0FilthyCreature0o 3 years ago
never fail to impress will be practising this, is it best to start with a slower genre as i generally play hardcore lol, or i could just slow it down i guess
ladybrock 3 years ago
no mate from my personal experiece you should practice with all kinds of music, there are no rules just play around with different styles. and you said that you play hardcore just try doing what ellaskins is doing on here but to every other beat, ellaskins should be able to give you a better explanation
o0FilthyCreature0o 3 years ago
im a big scratch fan i do it pretty much all day and night, i love it. and from what ive seen your a good teacher, breaking it down to the nail biting beginners stuff. alot of djs like qbert etc. although amazing, dont really show you how to do it. they just kinda do it and then say thats called a flare or a chirp. ignore some of these fools on here mate you got good teaching techniques.
o0FilthyCreature0o 3 years ago
with the input fader ? omg . don't lear this it's wrong . watch qbert's or scratch pervert's tutorials they are very good.
djpacu 3 years ago
yeah! its like a famous book entitled: dj lesson for dummies. this is by far the coolest video ive seen here about dj-ing. i can say this because im a dj too. knowledge and skills are obtained little by little. just like you've said... practice! beginners can learn a lot from you.
bartz8 3 years ago
Thanks for the tutorial. I've always wondered how scratching works. This is the true spirit of YouTube: sharing information and entertainment. Keep up the good work!

THIS QUESTION FOR NE1: Yall know how he mentioned how some DJ's put tape on their records to keep their spots? I was wondering, WON'T THE NEEDLE MESS UP WHEN IT runs over the tape or paper?
