I think phelps has the ability to better all of his times. The only one i think he might never be able to break is that 200 freestyle. When I saw him swim that at the olympics it was the first time i watched him really take out the beginning part of his race. He swam it perfectly. I think he could also do some damage in the 100 and 400 freestyle. His split in the relay for the 100 free was 47.5, which is the american record.

Carlosfast12 I think you are wrong. Micheal Phelps is not the ideal swimmer for backstroke. Look at his hands at the mid-point. At this moment rule Aaron Peirsol and Ryan Lochte. Peirsol is built more for backstroke. Lochte is swimming technicaly best.

phelps did swim 53.01 last year and i think he wasn´t even tapered....he certainly is capable of beating peirsol, he did it this year in santa clara after swimming 2 other events and he had a faster in season time than peirsol...however peirsol has beaten him most of the times (100 & 200) so you can´t really assure he will beat peirsol in a major meet
