It's from the "25th Anneversary" album, released in May 1986, This album contains 20 top hits + 20 previously unrealised recordings. This song is one of these 20 unreleased songs.
this song came from the time of More Hits By THe Supremes its on disc 2 of the unreleased things they did on the Expanded Edition of More Hits by the supremes due out next month. yay
This song is nice reprieve from what the Supremes usually recorded. I like the fact u can hear Mary & Flo doing a 'call & response' type of thing instead of the usual 'ooh & aaah', they were subjected 2 sing.
Thanks for the great post! Even more amazing than the song are all of the pictures I have never seen of the girls! Great job- I appreciate hearing this song and seeing the girls- just like back in the day.
I wish folks would get it right, Diana, Florence, and Mary were the Supremes. Diana sang lead yes, but damn, it was a group effort here that made the winning sound. Not Diana alone. I tell you Berry knew that through this group and their chemistry with the winning team of HDH they were able to make the right sound and WIN. Diana was NOT a single act she was a Supreme first.
@Vincent50, Truth be told, I think Diana could have pulled it off with any women behind her, as was proven with Andante fill- ins. What really is just as important here is HDH's arrangements and instrumentation.
This one is from the "Motown Vaults", as it was never released as a single, or on any of their earliest albums. It was "reworked" however, and became "Mother Dear", which first appeared on their third album "More Hits By The Supremes".
This wasn't ON an original album, but it was originally scheduled to be on "More Hits". As you can tell, it sounds a LOT like "Mother Dear" and "Nothing But Heartaches".
This was the best 'new' H-D-H nugget to be found on '25th Anniversary,' and I loved it instantly, but 'Penny Pincher' and 'Send Me No Flowers' (then being heard for the first time too) are also very good. Ross still has that newness to her voice and you can tell H-D-H hadn't been ordered yet to place Ballard further back from the mike. She's full and she's strong. It was a moment in time when that female trio and the male trio producing them could do no wrong.
I fell in love with THREE individuals called the Supremes. We all chose who we liked better, etc. but what it comes down to is the fact that each woman was part of a big thing called the Supremes. Without each one individual to make up this fantastic group the magic would NOT have been the same I don't care how you try to change it or re-mold it. The magic happened because the THREE of them had the drive to be SUPREME.
this is mother dear. this was the first release, but h-d-h decided to change the lyrics and the phrasing and the title and it was released as mother dear on the more hits album, whuch was considered for release. nothing but heartaces won over mother dear. mother dear was considered later on for release with a faster version but never nerver swa the light of day until the recent box set cd
Listen Kurt without Diane the Supremes would have just been another Motown girl group. Diane drove them to the stardom they were. Reality check! She went on to become one of the most successful female entertainers of all time... Mary, still trying to push out a log.
@ROXYLUCY Hm. I think you'll find Miss. RoxyLucy, that there are 3 girls that make up The Supremes. Sure, Diana's voice appealed to the White audiences, but also remember that she sang lead on other Supremes songs that were FLOPS. It was the paring of HDH with The Supremes that made them successful.
Great choice of pictures Lil missy. They showed that there was a time when these three young ladies were friends. All it took was demon named Berry Gordy to destroy it.
i was born in 62. 7th child of eight kids older sisters loved diana, four tops, ect. so as i grew these song have embeded into my soul. now 46 i crave this music, accually always have but find it hard to find something to collect.
I beg your pardon! Your older sisters would have been into the legendary SUPREMES, not "Diana." Just because you came of age during Diane's solo career don't pull that "Diana Ross revisionist history with me. The legend of the Supremes is greater than the sum of its individual parts. Diane was an individual part of something bigger and greater than herself, the legendary SUPREMES! The songs that were "embedded in your soul" were by THE SUPREMES, not Diane! Please get your facts straight!
first off its Berry not Barry get it right! and the 1964 version from the Lost and Found is way different, ive always liked this song and both versions are good
If you read the history on The Supremes these girls were very close and very tight as friends. It was Barry Gordy who ruined there friendships and the group as a whole. The Supremes came to end in 1967, and became a new group called Diana Ross the Back Ups! All 3 girls were victims of lust and greed! Flo should still be with us today...and the group still performing as one! Thanks Barry!
I love this song because although there is a call-and-response format, the lead singer's role is not magnified to be 98% of the song's worth. This song has a GROUP SOUND!
Oh and just one more thing: the real reason I LOVE this record is because I hear three young women in front of great band, delivering a song written by great writers, all having the time of their lives...!
Yes, I agree too. These Supremes records are priceless because not only does Diana do a great job, Mary and Flo's backing vocals aren't mixed too far to the back; Holland Dozier & Holland are reaching their stride and entering their peak period as songwriters (anyone with ears could recognize It's All Your Fault as an HDH song); the Funk Brothers are right on target (as usual); and the once again the recording is good. And It's All Your Fault still sounds great today.
This was actually recorded BEFORE Mother Dear so really Mother Dear is based on it. You should hear the alternate versionof Mother Dear I'm gonna post =D.
another hdh classic from the supremes. flo and mary nice and clear on this track, the best supremes recordings are the ones that all 3 voices can be heard.
@BAREBACKER I AGREE!!! You distinctively hear all 3 girls, while Diane leads, Flo and Mary's vocals were handled PROPERLY...giving them a REAL "group sound" I ADORE THIS SONG AS WELL!!!
This song (by Holland-Dozier-Holland, of course) was recorded on August 1, 1964 and then again on February 23, 24 & 26, 1965. It wasn't released until 1986 (the 25th Anniversary album). Very catchy tune...and it's nice to hear Mary and Flo so clearly in the background!
This song isn't from "More Hits"...it wasn't released until maybe '86 on their 25th anniversary CD! It stayed in the vaults for years...like other great songs that weren't released during their heyday!
Motownbaby is this what the recording industry's marketing strategies have been for so many years??-- Put some good tracks in the vault, so we can make money off of them for a longer period of time?
this sounds exactly like "mother dear"

I'm a big DRATS fan, but this one of the stupidest songs they've recorded. The B-side no-hit "Sweet Thing" outshines this song by leaps and bounds
