Aside from that rather mediocre triple twist, I just loved this program. I really though they should have won here, outright. This program just has absolutely everything: great music and choreography, excellent tricks, style, comedy, fun, great technique, and seamless transitions. It was a program and a show in the way that very few pairs have ever managed to perform. I prefer this over anything else I've seen them do.
It shouldn't be accessible. I mean if 96 % of the audience have no idea of what "Thais" is and what opera is, all they need is soap operas and bizarre TV shows- this don't mean you should stop making real art. The artist shouldn't adjust to public taste, he should educate the public with the real, high quality art.
And practically, "Meditation" showed better than "City Lights" their speed, the continious movement and fantastic body lines.
I'm not disagreeing with you, but all I am saying is that City Lights would have played better in SLC than Meditation did.
Although I truly respect Meditation for it's difficulty and beauty, I can't help but feel it was sort of forced. I thought Sentimental Waltz and City Lights were better routines.
I have to respectfully disagree. "City Lights" would have worked better with the audience, but not with the judges.
For the judges this program wouldn't look so superior to "Love Story" - it had pauses, too much acting, too much posing, too open holds and it would also be an old program - all the disadvantages that Love Story was occused of and lost to "Thais". No way they would win the presentation with "City Lights".
they're absolutely phenomenal.........the brilliant technical skills even come as second with how emotionally affective their skating is............for lack of better words, it's soooooo fxcking beautiful
Yeah, the Russians might have deserved the gold here, but the following year the Canadians deserved the gold at the Olympic games and got robbed. So I guess everything ends up equaling out in the end.
no, I guess it just means that the sport was/is a totally corrupt SHAM full of deals amoungst the judges with so many worthy champions dedicating their lives to a sport that never rewarded them. I do agree however, things worked out nicely for both pair teams and at least they were responsible for changing the sport. Althugh, the judges are still using PCS marks to slot skaters into predetermined places.

People should get over it. This was 7 years ago the Canadians won because they deserved it. Just because Elena and Anton didn't win doesn't mean that they aren't amazing because they so are.
2001 Worlds irritates to no end. A gift to a very angry girl, her partner though she's content here. She got a present. Unfortunate:this was held in Canada. A gift to so-so pair of S&P. No question there. B&S, better technique, presentation, more attractive, beautiful pair to watch. Jamie's 'tears' of anger, joy-tedious. Watching in her 1st World's,then martyr in SLC confirmed what was thought. Arrogant, angry.Blaming Anton for crash. What this angry girl did to the Sport w/her actions-unspeakable.
Just beautiful. . . elegant, great choreography, wonderful emotion, beautiful line and extension. They are simply the best for me. I can't justify putting S&P ahead of them barring a major, major error. For me, they skate exactly how I think a pair should.
And Anton's facial expressions are so adorable!! :)
I loved this program and think it is certainly the most unique one done in a LONG time, but I wonder if using something like this hurt them competitively. Sometimes the judges can react negatively to programs that are so different. Of course, all but one judge gave them 5.9s for presentation, so they seemed to like it. I don't know, though...
It wasn't the program that hurt them , it was the Worlds being held in Canada. The most ugly moment of figure skating - mediocre program with mistake wins over genious flawless one.The funny thing is that N. America media did't objected or scream about cheating.
Sale gets some 5.9 for techique with the mised axel!!!!!!

I'm sure it didn't have anything to do with that. After all, the biggest example of favoritism EVER in pairs skating happened at the 1990 Worlds in Canada to a Russian pair. Gordeeva/Grinkov won with two major mistakes over the Canadian team Brasseur/Eisler, who had two far more minor mistakes. These geographical conspiracy theories are all hoaxes, particularly because many times other Russian pairs have competed on North American soil and won countless titles. Their reality is too dubious.

Also, if the '01 Worlds had been held in like eastern Europe and B&S had won S&P could claim they were favored.
Both of these performances were clean--no falls, in other words--but the judges went with the popped axel over the shaky throw 3Loop and collision on the 3Twist.
Sometimes they treat popped jumps better if the flow is kept going. Sometimes jerky landings receive more derision because they can be very disruptive to the performance.
Though singling the axel down-graded their technical difficulty, S&P had a harder 3Twist and lifts which probably made up for it. I really can't say who I would have picked; I'm just glad I wasn't a judge! :)
Harder twist? They had the same mistake B&S did - late catch when the lady lands by herself.Neither they had difficulty on lifts - they had multiposition lift but with the illegal hand to leg support and simple exit.B&S had back press lift with extremely difficult entry and exit.Pretty equal on the lifts. So the only difference is the missed jump vs slight chech of balance on the throw. I guess you know the answer - missed jump costs more points off.
(I'm not sure if my last post went through, so I repeating the last one. If two show up that's why. :P)
Yes, the female commentator mentions their more difficult twist in the vid of S&P's LP. Her exact quote is, "An unusual twist, made more difficult by the reverse type of entry and the change of edge on the landing."
Also, they did have difficult life exits. At 1:52 (this is in the version of their LP posted by lakchorra) there's a spinning exit that greatly resembles one done by G&G in their '88 Olympic LP, and at 4:20 David assists Jamie onto the ice on one foot.
While Jamie did singled the 2A, B&S did have a slight problem with one of their side-by-side jumps. At 1:19-1:23 they planned a 2A/step/3TL combination but doubled the TL.

(Sorry, the above should say, "difficult lift exits," not life!)
Like S&P, this isn't a mistake since it's the free skate but it does lower their technical difficulty. Had they completed the combo as planned I believe they would have won the World title. I'm not personally advocating the cause of either team. They're both great and skated brilliantly at '01 Worlds. Their performances are jewels for the skating world. However, either way I don't think it's really unfair.
Once you put your personal preferences aside and look at what you have written, you would find some strange things. The technical value of the programs was the same-B&S had more difficulty on spins and spirals, S&P-on lifts (suppose although it's not really correct),twist as I have writen was the same. Now S&P jump 1a/seq/2t. B&S jump 2a/seq/2t. But you say that in order to win B&S had to jump 2a/3t which they never did and never intended to do.How does it sound to you?
It was extremely interesting to see the marks. For the technical merit Sale missed axel,no catch on twist, illegal hip lift, shaky 3t - she gets 5.8 and some 5,9 .Berezhnaya - no catch on twist, balance check on the throw - gets 5.6 and some 5,7.
Too bad the commentator didn't mention that B&S had the same entry ,and the change of edge is a mistake - there must be clean outside edge on the exit, both had the same mistake - no catch.
In 1990 it was Mishkutenok&Dmitriev who deserved to win there over G&G due to some unknown judge's fixes(Well may be actually known).M&D deserved the gold, G&G the silver (really good program which worked for them) and B&E - the bronze, they sadly never were up to G&G standarts .
I agree, I would have given it to M&D. They did have the flawless program with only a tiny trip at one point. I really like them, they're one of my favorites, mostly because of their sensational Olympic winning LP. I believe they were better than G&G, though most disagree, and should have won the '94 Olympics as well.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
However, I don't think there's ANY way to justify G&G finishing above B&E at '90 Worlds. If G&G skated cleanly certainly B&E were nowhere near their caliber(their strength was mostly in the technical mark, even that eventually becoming inconsistent for them), but at that competition they DIDN'T skate clean. Katia completed only one of four planned side-by-side jumps, not even attempting one of them. The breaks her mistakes made in the program should have been deducted from both marks.
G&G certainly had far and away the best LP of the championship; the music, the costuming, the presentation were all perfect. (I always go for the classical performance; I HATED that '80s rock pairs were prone to use at that time.) Katia looked no longer like a little girl but a beautiful young woman who made a splendid Juliet. However, of the top contenders, they had the worst PERFORMANCE that night.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
B&E were not totally perfect either; Isabelle put her hand down on two throw jumps, but there no falls and her errors seemed so minimal compared to Katia's. I'm not even sure G&G should have been on the podium that night. S&P's similar mistakes on the '00 Worlds kept them off the podium.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Oh, and before someone claims that M&D's placing behind B&E was a result of the 1990 Worlds being held in Canada, that argument has no weight for obvious reasons. Why would they have placed them 2nd when they could easily have put them 1st? No one would have believed them wrong after G&G's performance. M&D were put in 3rd because the judges wanted G&G to remain the top Russian pair as long as they were amateurs. As soon as they retired M&D were given the spotlight and Russian support.
You forgot that Brasseur&Eislet had the lowest technical merit of the top pairs. For an example M&D completed clean sbs 3toes/seq/2t , 2axels and two clean throws. Selezneva&Makarov completed sbs 3 toes and two sets of 2 axels (with one minor step out). Even Gordeeva&Grinkov did 3 toes (with small step out but credited). Isabelle&LLoyd had only 2 axels and two flwade throws.
