woooow. how does he play upbow chords???? in 4:36!!! I can play only downbow!!! I want to learn this technic. Nice. and he looks to the conductor like "look, I can play upbow chords also ;-) " so cooool
You are so full of it!! Show me one violinist today who has the voice of Zukerman. Show one! You make it clear that you have no understanding what so ever about violin playing. Just shut up & listen to the music...
Whatever dude.....I know students that can play better than the way he's playing now. He's a great talent and one of my favourite violinists. He's just getting old dude! You lose muscle control in your right arm and can't feel the bow like you could when you were younger. It happens to everyone. Everything is "crunch crunch crunch". Maybe at the back of the hall it sounds good but under the ear or the microphone it sounds like ass.
I've heard him twice within the last few years. Once playing the Elgar with the Chicago Symphony & the other time playing Mozart #5. On both occasions, he had the most beautiful deep, dark tone. Show me one violinist, who has such a sounds, besides Oistrack who is dead! I've had the fortune to hear many great violinist, including the great Nathan Milstein, Szeryng, Gulli, & Menuhin. I think I know a little about violin playing...
Look, Zuckerman is great, but the way he plays in this video is grotesque. By the way, I'm a proffesionsl violinist play full time in a symphony orchestra. When I was about 19 I had a couple master classes with him at festivals. (Music camp) So if you wanna talk violin....
Just curious, which orchestra you play in? Although I'm not a professional violinist, I could have been; I chose medicine instead. And everyone has an opinion, and I respect that. Just hate it when people "rip" on performances that they in no way can replicate!
I'm not going to disclose what orchestra I play in....but it's a descent one. Not Vienna or Berlin....but on the same scale as say detroit symphony). I don't think I could ever play as well as Zuckerman. Certainly not as consistently and I don't have the kind of repertoire learnt as he does. I don't even come close. Believe me....I worship the guy. That doesn't mean I think that he is God and plays EVERYTHING brilliantly all the time.
contined part 2...... Check out his Beethoven violin concerto. I think it's the greatest ever recorded. It's the temperment that is so difficult to find when it comes to beethoven and he's got it. This kind of animated calm he has when he plays if that makes any sense... Violinists out today who I think are great....leonid Kavakos could be the best out there right now. I'm sure how Mutter is playing these days but she's always been interesting. Hilary Hahn I like as well.
Thanks Beeffyviolin...I apologize for my harsh remarks earlier. I do agree with your assessment about Leonidas Kavakos, he is phenomenal. Heard him play the Sibelius. As well as the new sensation Sergey Khachatryan. All the best!
It happens to everyone?! You're clearly still very young !:)I know what you mean about the "crunch" but I honestly think that it is the recording, maybe the mike is too close? Whatever, I for one can certainly forgive a certain roughness now and again (I disagree that it's everything) for the sheer vitality of the performance. The second movement particularly is to die for! He is still the greatest. No-one can match his sound.(Mind you, I've been in love with him for forty years!!!)
This is one of the most absurd statements i have ever heard. Zukerman is sitll in the top of his form...I heard him play the Brahms, Mendelssohn just this year, and it was absolutely wonderful. NO "STUDENT" violinist can perform like him.
You claim you are a 'symphony' player...then you should know during these televised concerts, that the mics are placed very close to the soloist, and if you ever saw Zukerman in concert, you would know that the "crunch" is not what you hear in the hall.
If you read my other comments I say that at the back of the hall it probably sounds good. I'm sorry you disagree.... and speaking of "seeing Zuckerman in concert". I studied with the guy for 2 different summers. He's a cocky son-of-a-bitch. (Maybe the word "grotesque" I used was a little strong, but I'm comparing him to the great violinists of our time and compared to them... it is not very good. Sorry. Listen to Anne Sofie Mutter play the same piece.
@pppsssssssss Amen to that... plus that 'crunch' is what makes some of the strong sections this piece e.g. the down bow multistops, so effin' pwnage :)
I can't say much for the Israel Philharmonic, but show me a live performance of the Bruch that has as much character. And as for Mehta, he is a great performer & showman, I think he merits a little more respect! What have you accomplished in your life??
amazing.

Bravo! Zukerman's Bruch is very powerful. His left hand is fleet-fingered and as usual his bow arm is quite smashing!
