The original version was by Paco de Lucia, and was called "Rio Ancho". The track first featured on Paco de Lucia's 1976 album Almoraima. In 1980, Paco de Lucia and Al Di Meola collaborated and produced an ensemble track composed of Di Meola's "Mediterranean Sundance" taken from his 1977 album Elegant Gypsy with "Río Ancho". It was performed live in San Francisco on December 5, 1980 and the set was released by Columbia Records as simply Friday Night in San Francisco. Wikipedia "Rio Ancho".
no!no!this music piece are playing from 2 players not from 3 from 3 players was playing in Paco de Lucia's cover on Mediterranean SunDance (Rio Ancho-Rumba) aranged from the best musicians from the Paco de Lucia's group
What few people know is that during the "Friday Night..." performance, some asshole walked up to the stage and threw a handful of change on stage at the trio's feet, turned and walked out of the building. Very odd...
I was at the San Francisco performance that ended up on the album. It was something special, for sure. We hit Led Zeppelin, the Stones, the Tubes (at Bimbo's 365 Club, in their heyday!) etc, in those days. Not to mention Robin Williams, Ellen DeGeneres, Sam Kinnison et al at the stand-up comedy clubs... special days in SF!

sorry to say budy, but this is neither the first med.sundance nor the original recorded 'fri....sanfransisco' med. sundance...the very original first song belongs to al's album-elegant gypsy which is 5:14 mins in length(1977) and the most famous version of this 'friday....sanfransisco' sundance includes john mclaughlin and 11:27 mins in length(1980). unfortunately, no one have the videos of those.5:14 mins sundance was not recorded in video, dont know about the 11:27 mins performence.
@valueless11 aside from the audio/video being off a little bit, this is the version i think most people have heard. (its definitely the one i'm used to listening to.. the part from 1:51 to 2:00 would be pretty impossible to play the same twice lol (including the guy in the audience screaming)
@rizzope42 i agree with u.mp3 version for this is actually teqnicaly remastered of this performence.specially the ending of mp3 version is totally different.but u r right that starting part is same.the mp3 version is a bit longer than this one also. but what i mean to say,THIS IS NOT THE FIRST MED;SUNDANCE PLAYED BY THEM.original one is a track from the album 'elegant gypsy'.seems like paco and al never played that tune again in any live show.that is the most famous one. plz share ur thaughts.

I thought I know what music is, today I recognize that I didn't really, before I discovered that piece. It takes all of my body and soul. I was born in '88, so I wasn't on earth when they played live on Friday Night in San Francisco. But I can say this music is so much better than the crap people usually listen to, today...
I have listened to most of what many consider to be the greatest guitar albums. I've listened to all the Jimi Hendrix albums, Most of Clapton's albums, a lot of beck, zeppelin, van halen, django, sagovia, larry coryell, chet atkins and many more guitar albums but none of those still come close after listening to this album for 2 years.
@happyface4444 Wow, you actually listened to this album for two whole years? I've been listening to it for forty years. Your comparison with Hendrix, Clapton, etc. is nonsense. My guess is you're a youngster who should be more worried about the prom than music you know nothing about.
@jdrock14 hey i know music pretty well. just because your going through your midlife crisis doesn't mean you have to try to ruin my favorite album. I wasn't saying those guys were bad, they are good. I love hendrix and clapton and own most of there stuff(except for the crappy posthumous hendrix stuff that they keep trying to rerelease). i just think these guys are better. if you don't like the music than why are you on here?
@happyface4444 1st of all, I think these guys are incredible, that's why I've been listening to them since before you were born. 2nd, my point was, you can't compare these guy's with other guitarist's. This form of play is extremely unique. These guys can't play like Clapton, and Clapton can't play like them. It's not who's better, it's who you like. i.e. I play football, you play baseball, who's better?
@jdrock14 i think that's why happyface was expressing the fact that he prefers these guys to the other's, if you have a problem with that, then it is you who is out of order, like you say "It's not who's better, it's who you like"
and just because you listen to something for longer doesn't mean you have a greater appreciation of it.
i can't believe you managed to confabulate a contention with happyfacy over such a trivial point.
@jdrock14 The first three songs of the album were done by two of the guitar trio. rio ancho has paco and al, short tales of... has john and al, and frevo rasgado has paco and john.
Fantasia suite is done by all three of them live and guardian angels was a studio recording of all 3 of them(but they did play guardian angels live that night).
Isn't something bordering on impossible to perform this piece at any two separate times the same way twice? I mean, somebody obviously knows background - and I can understand studio enhancements (although rough hewn would still be superior) - but wouldn't be minimal, considering the notes we're hearing are those we're seeing their fingers blurr- ah, playing? (Isn't it like the whole 'no two snowflakes' thing?)
So from 5:07 on, this was completely redone in the studio. Very interesting, to say the least. Reminds us all that these guys are human, too. Although I should mention that this was pretty early in the tour--by the time they played the Hollywood Bowl in August of "81, when I saw them, they probably could have attained 'Friday Night"s level of technical performance with no overdubs.
Sorry Gtrrplayer 77, but your comments are fallacious and completely wrong. If you listen at 7:12 of the CD (Friday Night at San Francisco), there is a several second long bass scale played by Al DiMeola that does not occur at all in this video. In fact, listen from 7:00 to 7:45 of the CD, there is no such lead by DiMeola anywhere in this video. In addition, the CD version is 11:35 in length and this video version is only 10:25.
This is not from Friday Night in San Francisco. So apologize.
I feel quite sad... I mean, they're like gods of guitar but, I thought I had the original live song in my disc for many years. Why did they need to cheat us?
Well to be more true this was recorded on Saturday Night. You can hear me screaming on it. They played Friday night also but this is from Saturday Night's performance. Beginning Crowd roars and a Shout was me(11-12seconds). Al first lead and I scream again(2:01-2:02)... Yes this was on Saturday night... Was great Live... Should been there I was lol. Thanks for a great video... Take me a week to get this smile off my face after watching this video...
This just remind me that there is some good music left just got to look for it in the right place music industry full of crappy music and crappy artists right now I'm glad I found this havnt heard this in a while
Paco de Lucia, artistic name of Francisco Sanchez Gomes is a Spanish flamenco guitarist. His last name "Gomes" is because of his mother, Lucia Gomes, born in Castro Marim Portugal. He is considered one of the best guitar masters of all time. Has received many awards. He’s Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Cadiz and the Berklee College of Music, Boston University, award given in May 2010.
The song he plays in this video is "Entre Dos Aguas", composed by him
I agree with what's said, this is the best recorded live guitar in history. What I think really makes it sparkle is that fact that it seems to me, imo, that Al DiMeola is desperately trying to keep up with Paco rhythmically, knows he can't, and ends up throwing the buzzsaw right hand like no one's ever done.
Either way, it seems like Paco is in charge here. Listen to the intro lick to both of their first solos, and tell me Paco's doesn't somehow fit better.
The left one´s "Al" from "Home Improvement.".. ;-) No, just joking. I´m glad I found this vid, looong Time ago this was one of my favorite records and I didn´t even know there´s a video. Thank you for posting this!
Those are two of the best guitar players known...but i stop and think that there are some guitarists unknown that are much better...as for me....i only hope that i can get half as good as they are
@TudorGliga26 well, i wouldn't say much better, but at least as good as... for example my guitar teacher: he is not famous at all, but he is one of the best guitar players there is... i mean, sure he's not the best in the world, because Al is, but he's like in third place on my list, he is really amazing
Well, actually this version seems to be a bit different from the album version, which I listened to at least a hundred times over the years. It's similar, but not identic, definitely not the same version as on the album. It's audible when listening carefully to the album version. It's strange, some parts within the song are identic, some differ. Is it possible, that they put together parts from different concerts for the final album version? I don't know..
good god man, I...I want to play like that guy man, i'm very musically oriented and i can't begin to describe just how awesome i feel just by listening to this
WOW that was great to watch. I've been listen to this on LP and CD since 1992, and I have tried playing this number on guitar hundreds of times. I never knew this concert was recorded on movie.
Por Dios Paco es de otro mundo.... simplemente el mejor de la historia ... mmmm... bueno de repente llega a mi mente el niño Miguel y alcanzo a dudar... pero bueno... GENIO indiscutible e inigualable
this is the actual show, the lp is edited. And sped up a tiny bit as well.
Still the best live guitar ever recorded. Ever. 30 years later - this still owns everything out there, and these guys can still pull it off, if a bit less articulate.
So adept and so melodic. Count your blessings to enjoy this - we will not see players like this for a long time.
Well to be more true this was recorded on Saturday Night. You can hear me screaming on it. They played Friday night also but this is from Saturday Night's performance. @Gtrplayer77 A friend of mine just allowed me to discover McLaughlin through him. A mere month or two later- I see an ad that he is coming to town to play this Friday night. I got a ticket so quick.......I feel SO blessed that I am able to even go to the show.
Certainly an asset for San Francisco.

Still, the scream from the audience at 2:00, when the impossible to make out solo ends, is one of my nicer moments.

Listen to the intro lick to both of their first solos, and tell me Paco's doesn't somehow fit better.

the playing on this is superhuman1 Di meola's picking hand has a mind of it's own.

Those are two of the best guitar players known...but i stop and think that there are some guitarists unknown that are much better...as for me....i only hope that i can get half as good as they are
TudorGliga26 1 year ago

I don't know..

this is the actual show, the lp is edited.

@Gtrplayer77 A friend of mine just allowed me to discover McLaughlin through him. A mere month or two later- I see an ad that he is coming to town to play this Friday night. I got a ticket so quick.......I feel SO blessed that I am able to even go to the show.
