In a show like this, American Idol has to go through a full rehearsal before the live show to check the timing, to make sure everything fits in one hour and so everyone knows where they should be. Just like the wedding, there is a rehearsal as to where everyone should be and what everyone should do. The judges took notes ahead of time so they can judge at the end. The judges cannot really write or should not ever write notes during the performance bcoz it is intimidating. They should just watch.
