I have a PhD in linguistics, I'm a pronunciation and listening trainer, and this video angered me. There is NOTHING inherently wrong with the way those featured in the video speak. It's simply a variety of English that differs from what is currently seen as the prestige form. Yes, if people want to succeed professionally they should try to speak and write in the more prestigous form - but to tell that group of people that they are speaking incorrectly is ignorant, false and unfair.

I'm a black woman. What white people have to understand is that these people aren't stupid... A lot of these kids speak this way on purpose because they know that if they speak properly in school they will be shunned and beat up. It happened to me plenty of times. A lot of times I was actually teased by WHITE students as well for not "staying in my place." Honestly it isn't all black people, but yes a lot of my people aren't articulate.
Thank god, I grew up in the bronx and when I went to college I first realized how speech can affect someone. It was pointed out to me how I pronounced certain things such as words that end in th. If you want to further yourself in life you have to speech correctly, it isn't a matter of black or white, it's a matter of speaking the language properly. I support him all the way.

The original word in Old English was "acsian" and if you read classic literature such as Chaucer you'll find "axe" as the verb used. We Americans are the ones who moved the sounds all around to come up with "ask" like we did with other British words.

I'm a black woman. What white people have to understand is that these people aren't stupid... A lot of these kids speak this way on purpose because they know that if they speak properly in school they will be shunned and beat up. It happened to me plenty of times. A lot of times I was actually teased by WHITE students as well for not "staying in my place." Honestly it isn't all black people, but yes a lot of my people aren't articulate.

Thank god, I grew up in the bronx and when I went to college I first realized how speech can affect someone. It was pointed out to me how I pronounced certain things such as words that end in th. If you want to further yourself in life you have to speech correctly, it isn't a matter of black or white, it's a matter of speaking the language properly. I support him all the way.

The original word in Old English was "acsian" and if you read classic literature such as Chaucer you'll find "axe" as the verb used. We Americans are the ones who moved the sounds all around to come up with "ask" like we did with other British words.

'Ebonics' isn't so much a regional difference, as it is a complete disregard for the language as a whole. They use improper verb substitutions (e.g., "I ain't did that").
I think you're missing the point, though. There's a difference between not pronouncing an 'h' and pronouncing a word incorrectly altogether ("axe").

@uyesu Nobody's been around more latinos then me and 78% of them can't even speak English the other half spoke horrible english. You people are really delusional! Most of the latinos I'v been around were mexican so I don't know about other hispanics. I'v heard black americans and southern white americans speak broken english but they can afford to speak with a colloquial accent because this is their country.

@hajispecialist And poverty is a problem because people have children they can't take care of. When I was MUCH younger a former girlfriend and I shared an apartment, shared a car, and managed to pay our bills while both making minimum wage. We had to cut out most forms of entertainment, and not spend needlessly but it could be done. + 1 CHILD = FOODSTAMPS AND WELLFARE

Ok every culture has members that have awful misuses to words. Think of how many redneck words that comedian Jeff Foxworthy has used, Prince in his movie when reffering to the "reca stow," Im hispanic and some of us have accents so thick I cant even make them out. Every culture has its flows get over it. Why sit their and point out every flow when our oun race has its own if not more? Just saying 2011 well people are acting like its still the 1400's.
