for those people that say it is 5fps, which in reality the video does have a low number of fps, it doesn't mean that you could achieve the same result with a regular camera (even a $3000 one) and then just make the video in slow motion. if you do, you won't see those little fragments of time between, lets say 0.0001 of a second to 0.0002, you'll probably see a picture of the airbag, then another picture of the airbag half open and then a picture of the airbag completely blown.

Get your facts straight. The video is showed approx. at 3FPS. Airbags deploy on average around 80ms. In the video airbag is inflated around 25s.

Simple math done -the video was recorded at 937,5 FPS. Take some error margin and it would sum up to 1k FPS.

It takes 30 to 40 milliseconds for a crash in an average sedan to have affect on a passenger, by 50 to 60 milliseconds the passengers experience extreme amounts of G-force, so at that point the airbag and the passenger will collide while the airbag is still deploying, which is one of the biggest things that is avoided when engineering a vehicle. the front air bag will not inflate in a side collision because it wouldn't do any good- you'd be "pushed" sideways, not forward into the airbag!

Those airbags are designed to go off on a frontal collision only, not a side collision.

A head-on collision is one type of frontal collision.

Head-on usually implies were the full front ends of two vehicles make full contact.

Another type of frontal collision is what's known as frontal offset, where only about half of the front gets crashed.

Air bags will go off in either case if the collision is sufficient enough to trigger the detonation.

The air bag has holes in it so the idea is that your head and body will replace the air inside the bag when you hit it. Hence forcing the air out and creating a cushion affect as air bleeds out.

When the airbag inflates, it is designed to hit an adult in the chest and part of the head but when an airbag inflates with a child in the seat, it hits the child's head only, breaking the neck (because the child's head is so much lower than an adults).

An airbag deploys in 1/25th of a second. At that rate, .04 x 3000 fps = 120 frames. This video is ~29 seconds @ 25 fps, or 725 frames. The bag starts inflating at :01 and is fully inflated at :21. That is 20 seconds @ 25 fps = 500 frames. If you notice the jerkiness of the video, that is because there are ~4 frames of this video for every frame of the original.
