  • holy crap....i remember this song!!!!! i loved it...still do!!! lil transistor radio with only am stations..riding my bike with the banana seat and the shifter!!!!! will somebody please invent a time machine so i can go back and relive those times!!!! thanks sooo much for posting....

  • @69mercurymarquis - you're very welcome!

  • This song is about personal lubricant

  • he said, "his dad said look at her ... "SHES JAM UP AND JELLY TIGHT".... he said that i remember... i agreed. it was about the "SHE"

  • Listen to the words: "WHAT is uptight, out of sight & in the groove"? The whole song is hinting! Also his song "Yummy yummy I have love in my tummy".It took me from 1963 until I'd been married for years to realize what was on with these word.

  • I had this 45 and i wore it out! It literally wouldnt play anymore cause the grooves were worn off the record!!

  • I probably played this song 500 times back in the late 60's !!

  • very good

  • From a site explaining "old timey" sayings: ”Jam up and Jelly tight” This saying is used when things are just right. Say your making a pot of soup and you take a taste of it and its just right, One would say thats “jam up and jelly tight” . Sort of like today's kids using "awesome".

  • Just thought of this song out of the blue so had to look it up. I was only 13 when it came out.

  • Oh yeah! I had forgotten about this song. It was fun to hear it again. Thanks!

  • @NanMarTren- you are welcome!

  • I have a 45 by Tommy Roe called 'I Think I Love You' which is a totally different version from the Partridge Family version as it is a doo wop song and has different lyrics. Anyone remember this? I have the 45 but not able to post on here. A favorite of mine, but one you never hear. I think it was from 1964.

  • i always thought this was a archies song--it was from that period--this a rare great hit-unknown by many..

  • Had totally forgotten this song from my childhood days, and never knew it was by Tommy Roe. Thanks for the memories ! ... Wayne

  • what the hell does jam up and jelly tight mean

  • @caseyface3- I read somewhere that Tommy said his Dad used to say whenever things were going well it was "jam up and jelly tight" . Ron

  • @rwells47 I remember seing that when he appeared on the Della Reese show. He also said some people think it means something dirty. Della's reply to that was "some people can make something dirty out St. Pauls Cathedral. I can't believe I remember that!

  • @caseyface3

I always thought of it as a sexual inuendo.

This song actually hit #1 in Flint, Michigan. Much better stuff than rap-crap.

  • @caseyface3 SEX

  • He was hot!

  • I remember 1969 and sitting in my bed at night with a small transistor radio just waiting for this song to come on. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. What wonderful memories.

  • @Dave12218- you're very welcome! Ron

  • @kevinturvy- oh yes, he is doing fine. He is semi-retired now. He did have a new song out last year that I have on my channel titled "It's For You, I'm Me". Ron

  • I said the first day i met you

    someday im gonna get you

so come on and give me some of it

    jam up and jelly tight

    lol

  • This was my favourite tommy roe song

    Rock baby

  • WHAT A TIME THIS SONG BRINGS BACK THE TRUE FELLING OF BEING YOUNG IN THE 60'S

  • A long forgotten song ! I love this song- thanks for the memories of a great childhood ! 60s rule !

  • Love it Brings me back

  • : )

  • Jam up and Jelly tight means it thickened up like its supposed to so its not a "dirty" meaning just means its GOOD STUFF! Like if Jelly or Jam didn't tighten up it would be like thick syrup. LOL get your minds outta the gutter people!

  • Tommy Roe is a great dance artist, and Dizzy, Sheila, Everybody, Sweet Pea, & this 1969-1970 song still pack a dancefloor.

Call it bubblegum, but musically it kicks, especially the original 7" in mono. Thank you for posting this timeless classic! DAVEDJ

  • @Multi1628 Well, one should question who coined up the term 'bubblegum'.

  • @Khultan Producers Jerry Kasenetz & Jeff Katz, have claimed credit for coining the term "bubblegum music." along with Buddah Records' Neil Bogart. Genres & categories (to me) are "limiting," & whether (to me) it is bubblegum, swing, new wave, disco, garage, nu-soul or whatever, it's all good dance music, & my fave thing is mixing genres & decades. Sooooo.... there is lots of room in my repertoire for such artists as Tommy Roe, or the Monkees or whomever! Peace... Happy Mardi Gras !! DAVEDJ

  • @Multi1628 Of course. I, personally, never knew until now I suppose from where the term orginated and suspected it may have been from an old person out on the rocks from a younger generation.. Be that as it may, I never used the term as I regard it as a 'put down'.

  • @Khultan I do indeed agree. "Pigeon-holing" any music by limiting it to a less than flattering characterization is indeed a "put-down." I like the word "discotheque," and look at the disparaging way the term "disco" has been thrown around, as yet another example like "bubblegum." Music is music, and the dancefloor is what I really rely on, not a genre or a "name." Respect... DAVEDJ

  • @Multi1628 That's another one, I didn't know that 'disco', as customarily practiced in the U.S. of A., is an abridgement of discotehque.

  • OMG, I so forgot about this song....thanks for the memory! Go 60's!!!!

  • @twokmb01- you are welcome! Ron

  • Excellent! And a brand new saying to employ. Ta!

  • @irkbeat - thanks Mark! Ron

  • I'm 39 and discovered this song 3 years ago. I was told it was banned from air play because of its suggestive lyrics.. I think the FCC is asleep at the wheel these days. Awesome song though, love it! Thanks for posting.

  • @lunarchick1971 I remember hearing it back then (1969-1970), but not too often...mostly on jukeboxes and at dances.... jr high school girls really got into it, and everyone was clueless what the lyrics actually meant....today as a musician I recognize it as pure bubble gum but am intrigued at the modulation (key changes/changes in tone center) that occurs throught the song...

  • Jam up and Jelly Tight. The kids in our town Licking Mo. 1969/70.

Dedicated to The Neighborhood behind The Store.....& WLS&KAAY AM! back then..

  • nice song

  • The drum break after the first verse sort of sounds like the drum break in "Bend Me, Shake Me" by the American Breed.

    Thanks for the post.

  • and Johnny Mathis

  • dolphinsqueen- you are welcome! Ron

  • Moxmox9494, Cherry Pie is by Warrant.

  • 1970 was crazy . VIETNAM ! God , I was scared .

  • I love this song!!!

  • @765tony -Very glad you made it back!!!

  • YEAH!

  • Always been a great sing-a-long dance number.

The phrase Jam Up & Jelly Tight has been around for a long lonnnng time - way before the song and the 1960's. The (correct) phrase is 'Jammed Up and Jelly Tight' meaning its stuck solid and cannot be moved/untightend/budged - certainly not 'everythings ok'

  • Dirty Bubblegum. Love it. The record company guy said. Can they play this on the radio? They did. Funky

  • reminds me of she's my cherry pie of today, def leppard I think...great quality on this! Thx. I heard 'Everybody' on you tube, it was good too. rock on 60's and 70's 4EVER

  • Now THIS is the version that I know and love. Thanks for posting.

  • This song was released in 1969. It went to # 8 in December of 1969. It was probably still on the charts and being played on the radio into 1970. Ron

  • Guess this month makers the 40th aniversary of this release.

  • Are we sure that 70 was the right year?

    I've heard 1969 as well.

  • Best song Tommy Roe ever did...a grest slice of nasty Bubblegum!

  • What a great song, takes me back to another time & place, Susan where are you ?

  • Sounds a little raunchy!

  • Now this is the real thing. I feel like I am at the Store across from The School in Licking Mo. in 1970. This was also played at the pool hall and on the AM Giants such as WLS AND KAAY....

  • I remember tis song wow been a long time since I heard this!

  • I read somewhere that Tommy said his Dad used to say whenever things were going well it was "jam up and jelly tight" . Ron

  • Yes, he actually says this on the "12 in a Roe" interview album leading up to this song. He adds that he doesn't see how anyone could read anything "dirty" into it. But the rest of the lyrics make it hard to picture anything too innocent. It's really the perfect Bubble Gum song; catchy, goofy, innocent and filthy -- all at once!

  • As we used to say back in 69/70 Right On

  • What the heck are these song lyrics supposed to mean?

  • Great great great bubble gum classic - better than anything the Archies ever did.
