Great musicianship. Awesome playing. I just wish they would foment their own music a little more. I remember McBride opening up for Shorter 15-7 years ago, and he sounded stuck in the early 60's -- now he's doing fusion redux. Boogie Woogie Waltz was great in 1972, but they've added nothing to it. It's not "fresh", especially for those who experienced WR live. Can't they think of something more compelling and convincing from their own generation?
i really like how simple the solo is (consant quarters on the rim knocks, only hi-hat and bass melodies) and how it builds progressively. but not a fan of how he played the rest of the tune. :(
I agree. It is without a doubt my favorit album of his. I hope he, Ron, Terreon, and Jeff stick toghether for awhile to come. The video doesn't do as good displaying the amazing talent these guys have. "Live at Tonic" has a little of everything. Actually going to a gig is best tho.
I saw him here in Denver a few weeks ago and they played Havana. If any body can cover a Jaco line its Christian. To cover a weather report song that well is amazing
Terreon Gully is not showboating. This is a Weather Report tune. Have you heard how hard they hit this tune? I love Terreon and think he's one of the best drummers alive. I love this whole band and I totally dig that Christian totally tears up the acoustic AND incorporates some of the best electric fusion, of which Weather Report was top of the heap. Fantastic band I've heard a couple of times live.
The purpose isn't to show off, It's to say something. I get to see terreon play a lot, and he always has something to say on the drums. In this solo thats what he was saying.
The WHOLE GROUP seems to be playing out through a great deal of this song. After listening to Terreon Gully's recordings with Christian McBride and Stefon Harris, I have never once thought that he was showboating. His playing allows this song to really burn. After meeting him, I have always thought that he was a very humble person. After a discussion with him, I feel strongly that he would never have intent to showboat. Is there anyone else that has met him and agrees?
I saw his band at the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival in Oregon during the summer. The Festival was rather small compared to how it usually was, but I was pleasantly surprised with Christian McBride because I had never heard him before and I really loved the music they were playing. So now I am a fan :).
Back in my bike racing days we'd ride on rollers when the winter weather kept us inside. Of course we had music playing to help us battle boredom. Boogie Woogie Waltz was played to give us something to spur us on to sprint all out in the big gears. If you were in shape you could pound it out through the whole last frenetic build up to the end.
Awesome! You can tell by the intense concentration and sheer creativity of the artist that they are beyond ordinary. The crowd's screams during the drummer's solo are reflective of pleasure expereinced during this piece! give me more!
which makes sense really. they came a lot from the same family of blues and american slave music. metal just incorperates more classical elements. and most fusion jazz and extreme metal are both underground forms of music. And you have to be extremely talented at your instrument to play both genres.
One of the main differences though is that in jazz, you need to train your mind more, in my experience (being moth a jazz and metal fan) metal seem to focus on training the fingers. It's very rare you'll see some thing truly original.
True. Metal tends to be about technical precision while Jazz is about rhythmic and melodic invention and spontaneous creation through improvisation. They are very different.
while this fusion jazz will use the fast stuff in short bursts metal will use it continually. many of the faster quarter beats are similair as well. now when i say metal i mean extreme metal, more underground stuff.
How do you figure? The chord structure is completey different and metal chords move together while in jazz each instrument changes chords in different spots. Theu also use a different style of rythms. I dont see any similarities
This discussion on metal vs jazz is pretty funny. I study jazz in amsterdam and just yesterday I gave my new history teacher a sampler cd of some cool metal I put together. Cynic is really close to jazz fusion, but I agree that it's closer to classical most of the time.
the crazy stuff that the saz player is busting out could fit on an electric guitar and in a metal song and it would work. the drummer if noticed is using a lot of ghost beats and blast beats, metal drummers use those as well only we use them a little differently.
Christian McBride, what an excellent player and so it everyone else in the band. Don't you all think his band sounds like "Weather Report" - I think they do.
i got to meet geoffrey keezer (the keyboard player) and i asked him if he has any influence from weather report and he said 'of course!'. i'm so happy i got to see them.

@jmsbk12345 Look at Sonny Stitt on the Varitone. This sounds like something in the same ballpark.

He's improvising, the purpose of a solo is to show off
lilkrissy123 3 years ago
What is the purpose of a solo then? If I paid somebody $1100 a gig then they better play their ass off!!!!

Metal is not jazz at all. Metal is more comparative to classical. Metal has no swing and usually does not have real improvisation.
