he was the first asian-american director to ever win an oscar for best director! truly historical! no one called attention to that special moment in oscar history!!!
I really loved Ang Lee's Oscar* Speech. This was his first Oscar* win. Since Schindler's List, Steven Spielberg makes movies every 5 years that gets nominated, I won't doubt that he won't stop making films anytime soon.
@wdsa8d Brockback Mountain was controversial in showing a gay relationship on screen like Midnight cowboy, therefore receiving such praise . But Munich was more bolder Politically in its subject matter that it deserved to win. Munich's political question were alot stronger than this films questions.
@theburningpancake brokeback mountain received praise for it's powerful storytelling which explored the subject matter of homosexuality. you can't make a good movie with just the subject matter alone, you need a good story. yeah munich had controversial political themes as well but that doesn't stop it from having a not so great story. that's the difference
@wdsa8d I found Munich's story in terms of political human drama and its questions alot stronger than the straight "Gay rights" story that this movie was.
One of the finest speeches of thanks in Academy awards history, in many ways, for once because it acknowledges not only the sincerity of the movies intention - a portrayal of a passion of a lifetime, and not just the angle of man on man, which is the hype that misguides. When it comes down to it - it's just love, isn't it? And by thanking Ennis and Jack, it's also a tremendous, if not the greatest acknowledgement possible for Gyllenhaal & Ledger, because...
they are the people able to breathe life into these two characters, and transcend them from being just that - characters, and make them two people. The biggest scandal in Academy awards history - that one of the greatest movies in cinematographic history does not get the largest (even though not most prestigious according to true connaisseurs like myself) award of recognition...
But does it matter? Brokeback Mountain will forever and ever be the one that should have won but didn't. And maybe that even counts for more. At least Ang Lee got his well deserved applause for a masterpiece of fingertip precision directing and sense of the absolute beauty of human emotion, no matter between whom.
Good Night and Good Luck should have won. It was an amazing movie. Although, I didn't see Capote, Crash, Broeback and whatever the other one is so what do I know?
As disappointed as I am that Brokeback lost Best Picture, this is a legendary moment- Ang Lee becomes the first Asian director to win, and the score by Gustavo Santaolalla is fantastic as he goes up to accept it.
@pibitopoxi Who knows? It might have been a thing where he was really just kind of adjusting himself in his seat, or just kind of a blank moment. We couldn't see his legs so who is to say?
@Popsicle789 : Because sadly I still think this movie is controversial, not only to the crowd but also to the movie industry... :( Maybe they don't dare to ransake themselves enough to admit that love is love no matter between whom. Or then their just ignorant and does not even understand the subtle art that Lee delivers.
@Bambikill99 It wasn't so much the movie was 'controversial' - I never thought it was personally, but that the Academy members didn't watch it. If they had the outcome would probably have been different
@reptongeek Well... I don't either. But people generally do. Being a part of the hollywoodhysteria doesn't automatically mean one is openminded :S Generally I think the Academy Awards suck - I like to watch it, but their taste is so f*d up sometimes, that I'd like to cry... A golden lion or a golden palm is a much greater achievement if one asks me. Recognition from those who know what they are talking about...
@Bambikill99 Sometimes they don't make good decisions. Another such example is The Greatest Show On Earth winning over High Noon. However to say they ALWAYS get it wrong is incorrect. Some critically acclaimed films have deservedly won Oscars. Every awards ceremony has decisions we don't agree with, not just the Oscars. Titanic not winning Visual Effects at the BAFTA's for example
@reptongeek Of course they're not always wrong, didn't say that either :) But there has been many total "wtf;s" through the years... However, everyone has different taste. Mine usually doesn't correspond well with the AA-jury. Sometimes the nominations are more or less commercially motivated, at least I can't find another reason for some flicks to win. Best actor/actress and directing, is usually the ones most accurate I think. Best movie not so certainly.
I haven't seen some awards w/c Ang Lee won, but i presume that he swept all the directing awards from his movie Brokeback Mountain w/c is also one of my favorite movie of all time
Miyoshi Umeki won a supporting acting oscar for "Sayonara" (1957). The pundits had Diane Varsi, "Peyton Place" as the leading contender. But she had a strong co-nominee for the same picture, (Hope Lange), and the strong message of racism in military society to help her win. The other two were also very worthy, They were, Carolyn Jones, "The Bachelor Party", and Elsa Lanchester, "Witness for the Prosecution".
Crash is a pretty good movie man... I really think any film could have won that year, it was simply a great year in films. Munich, Crash, and Brokeback Mountain are all worthy any other year and way better than Slumdog Millionaire. Such a great movie, but one can't deny the message from Crash is just as important if not more important.
yeah that's so true. Scorsese deserved one for at least one of the following films if not all of them: Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, and Casino.
Also, how did The Shawshank Redemption not win any oscars, that was bullshit.
But Crash is a great film, just nowhere near as good as Brokeback.
Brokeback losing the Oscar is the biggest farce in Oscar history, especially considering it won everything else under the sun more than any other movie ever, and over such a lesser film like Crash. The Oscars are corrupt.
What about Saving Private Ryan not winning Best Picture? Or The Dark Knight or Gran Torino not even being nominated for Best Picture or Best Director? I agree that Brokeback Mountain should have won Best Picture
Ryan was also robbed but not as bad because it didn't win as many precursors. As for worse things than Brokeback losing, no, 'cause Scorsese was "supposed" to lose for Raging Bull & Goodfellas even though he should have won by far. Ordinary People and Dances with Wolves were big frontrunners in their years. BBM losing is also worse because Academy members said they wouldn't even watch the gay movie; that's wrong. Its not about personal preference, but precedent. BBM's loss broke them all.
I always felt his Oscar for The Dark Knight was a kind of charity award for being denied the award for Brokeback. While he did well in The Dark Knight, his acting in Brokeback was far superior... even to Philip Seymour Hoffmann (who took away the award in 2005) IMO.
Rarely do I think an Oscar is deserved as much as Ang Lee deserves this
