what types of food do you store. i know you list a few here, but i would like to know what else you store/can store in a root cellar. thanks in advance!!
not for sure if this will help with the cabbage but my grandma did can it with like other vegies tomatoe carrots peas potatoes etc and it was the start of vegie soup just add meat it was really good and at that time i didnt like vegies. love ur videos plz have ur wife do more cooking ones thx
Out of interest, is your root cellar just an outside building with a concrete floor. Here in Poland, people dig them into the earth - almost like a bunker. Currently we are using our garage but the car has to be outside!
Nice. Very nice. Next summer we will have our land..so I am hoping to produce much more, because I will have more growing space than I do right now. Good stuff. Hope to see the videos of canning the apples, and making fillings, and applesauce. All the nifty things you do with it.
I wish I had more property... I would grow all my own vegetables. We will grow tomatoes and peppers, but thats about it. We can the tomatoes though for use in different things.
Great vid man!!! You certainly have some potatoes though!!!
yeh a little over board but thats ok anyways try a few other methodes of gardening for people with little space you can try square foot methode our raised beds with a 2nd level might work as well
I have a large light set dh built for me. It used to be in the sun porch but we moved it to the basement. We'll try starting the seeds down there this year and move them to the greenhouse when the weather starts to warm up.
When i trained in horticulture..... many moons ago,the old fashioned way to store cabages, brassicas in general was to leave the roots on and store them in moist sand in trays.root crops can be done this way too.just my 2 pennies worth :)
Your root cellar is what we call a "Michigan basement" here. The old farmhouse I grew up in had a basement just like that -- dirt floor, cement and stone walls, floor joyces overhead. My mother hated it because the little garter snakes tended to make their way into it to over winter and she was deathly afraid of snakes! We couldn't store anything down there because it would seasonally flood.
I've read it's apples and potatoes that you aren't supposed to store together because the apples give off ethylene gas which supposedly causes the potatoes to be prone to sprouting.
Thanks for the update. I really like the size of your root celler. I agree with pennyann333, dehydrating your extra apples would be a great way to make them last.
How do you keep your potatoes from growing sprouts and getting old after a while? i try buy a lot sometimes, but never can keep them for a long time- love your videos!!
I dehydrated my soft apples for apple chips in breads and cakes. My boys like them for snacks. I also shredded and dehydrated my extra cabbage for soups and stews, good for at least 20 years. Dehydrate2store has some great videos on dehydrating. I found that dehydrating takes up less storage space, so I used few canning jars. Thanks for sharing your update on the root cellar. It's the largest root cellar I've ever seen. Love your videos.
You got alot in this year lol. You should make a video of the other place you keep talking about just to show us so we can image it when you bring it up next time.
Hello! New to the channel... How long will your potatoes and onions last in the root cellar? Luv the vids!

My mother always told me not to keep potatoes near onions. Is this an old wives tale or does it damage the potatoes to store them with onions?

Sauerkraut isn't hard to make. Just takes a long time. Alton Brown has a great vid on it. LikeTheHat on youtube is his channel.

We would grow on the other side of the basement. Its more of a "modern" style concrete floor etc. Its sealed off from the root cellar.
I normally start my seeds in March/April our last frost date is May 24 but the last few years we've had them in June.

Andy! You grew all this????? This is awesome! Now I know who to go to when I need my Root Cellar dug! lol
Thanks for the video.

You could make sauerkraut with those cabbages, that is a good way of storing them.

I seem to remember hearing something about Onions giving off a gas that makes the Potatoes rot.. I try to keep them away from one another.
Do you store them together all the time? And do you get a rot problem after awile?

Maybe your thinking of apples? I've never had trouble storing onions near potatoes before.

Make Cabbage Rolls and freeze them.
Rice, Tomatoes, Ground Beef, Spices, wrapped in cabbage and baked.
Geez, now I'm hungry...;-P

Hey, me too. I always end up with some plant growing out of them. I buy a regular bag at Martin's. Especially if I put them in the dark.

The root cellar stays cold and damp. They never start sprouting until late spring.
