While political correctness is important, I also believe you shouldn't give words power. The second you take offence is the second that the words own you. While I do think that Davey has a point (mainly because physically or mentally challenged people have a much harder time defending themselves) I don't believe it applies to the LGBT community or more widely, any able bodied person. While political correctness is important, I also believe you shouldn't give words power. The second you take offence is the second that the words own you. While I do think that Davey has a point (mainly because physically or mentally challenged people have a much harder time defending themselves) I don't believe it applies to the LGBT community or more widely, any able bodied person. They're just words.

I honestly don't understand why people are offended by the phrases "that's retarded" and "that's gay". I admit that I say/have said both of these and I'm certainly not straight. Ableism includes phrases like "that's crazy/psychotic". So yeah, it really is offensive, because what you're doing by using this phrase is taking the weakness of a particular group and projecting it onto someone else, thereby painting them with the same weakness in order to be insulting.
