A childhood friend of mine once worked for CRST and I showed him this video clip when he stopped by on Christmas. He laughed outloud and stated that it's all in a days work for many CRST drivers. Many drivers don't last a week before they flip some rig over or get into a wreck. My friend attended a real Driver Training School and got the hell out of CRST. Just being associated with that company caused his liability coverage rates to soar. CRST= Can't Remember Simple Training. How true.. LOL!!!

it's not about the HP of the train locomotive, it's about the momentum (p=mv) of the entire train. the fact that it's mass is so large and it's in motion at a significant velocity means that the amount of force required to stop it instantly is huge. a truck is certainly a fart against the wind here

All I can say, is that this was not a staged accident.. I work for csx, and have been to quite a few of these my self.. People just do not pay attention... If OL was planning a staged accident, it would be given press coverage, and it would have been with a car, and not a tractor trailer, and especially with not a domino affect. Staged- 2 engines, and a car. Not staged is with an entire train, and a truck. A truck can derail a train. too much to risk by doing that.

OL absolutely did not pay. I work with them frequently. The few staged crashes are conducted in highly controlled environments. This is a public crossing in the middle of the day with private vehicles going by. Shot taken by amateaurs.

BTW, this locomotive came very close to coming off the tracks. For those who think otherwise, this is 'almost' evidence that in a truck/car train collision it is not completely unheard off that the locomotives might derail.

Actually most passengers do survive in accidents. A crumple zone on a passenger locomotive would not help at all (in this video these are freight locomotives BTW).

For passenger protection, having the lead unit push away the obstacle with dead weight is far safer than equiping the locomotive with a zone designed to absorb the impact.
