I honestly don't think this fight should have took place....Ali was not well by this time, fair play to Larry Holmes who could clearly see this and fought within himself to spare Ali further damage.....but Ali would have beaten Larry Holmes easily in his prime
@Killa501 ur calling the greatest boxer to ever liver a looser u must be dumb i bet he would still beat u up about calling him a looser people like vitali who is the heavy weight champion he still says ali is still the greatest boxer ever and how dare u say hes a looser ur out of ur mind have some respect for the man
Holmes really held back, it looked like he could have knocked him out at any time. I think it would have been better for Ali to be knocked out early he might not have tried to come back again.
2:49 "Ali not winning this round, in my opinion.". In your opinion?! What are you fuckin retarded? Ali looks like a goddamn vegetable. Why in the hell did they let this fight continue? It's sad. Ali should have been retired long ago.
@robparry1 tyson would not have beaten ali if both were in there prime! Tyson was a brawler who struggled if he could not knock out his opponent in the first few rounds, not great stamina at all, Ali would have known this and kept his distance by hitting him with the jab. look at what he done to joe frazier(not his first fight with him but his other two), sonny liston and george forman...all of whom were big brawlers
People insist Ali was the greatest of all time because they are told so by the media and because he was (and is) a very charismatic man who was great at self-promotion - just listen to the commentator's bias. In reality there have been any number of fighters who would have beaten him in his prime - Lewis and Tyson to name but two. Anyone with any knowledge of boxing could see two things here: 1) Holmes didn't want to hurt Ali; 2) this is what really should have happened in the Foreman fight.
you cant classify this as a proper boxing match Ali was way out of his prime and had early symptoms of parkinsons disease. In the 1960's and early 70's Ali would have smoked Holmes and had him on the floor gasping for air. In this Fight Ali was almost 40 and Homles was only 31.Am glad holyfield and Tyson let holmes know about himself and beat him when he was older and slower.
Ali was a great boxer of all time then, he just didn't know when to lay down his gloves for good. All the battle scars made him look like an old man in this fight. I mean cmon' Holmes was like a sitting duck here! It is just a money fight for Ali.
Holmes against a peak Ali would have been interesting. Remember, Ali helped make Holmes. Larry had said in interviews that he learned a lot of his ring knowledge by being his sparring partner. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have been in his camp and picked up those tricks if he was a contender for Ali's title.
Ali should have never fought Holmes, He should have been retired already.. Ali was only fighting with pure instinct against Holmes, I would say he only had about one third of his boxing abilities remaining from his heyday.. But after his loss to Holmes he came back a year later to fight Trevor Berbick and although Ali lost a ten round decision to Berbick, He didn`t look half bad
Holmes was clearly going easy on Ali. He knew Ali was weak, taken by sickness, and slower than what we remember of him. Its not a pussy move to cry about beating the greatest. Out of respect, I probably would refuse fighting him. Just too much respect for not only an elder, but the biggest great of all time.
Ali is tragically overrated because of his large personality. Kenny Norton made him look ordinary, beat him every time. Frazier beat him up. Little Cooper put him down and hurt him.
@gjc82071 No one with a touch of boxing knowledge would say "Ali would have DESTROYED Larry Holmes". Ali would win, but he'd have been bothered by Holmes' size, skill, and awesome jab. Neither guy liked facing an opponent who could match their jab, so please don'act like Ali wouldhave destroyed Holmes with his great (sarcastic) left hooks to the body or punching power.
Ali and Holmes used to go endless rounds when they sparred. Ali whipped holmes when he was past his prime in those sessions. Ali constantly peppered holmes with right hand leads and even give instructions on how to defend against it while fighting.
Sadly, Ali curtain closed here. The greatest of all time looked pathetic here. Although Holmes wasn't my favorite fighter, i have much respect for the man for not taking advantage of the situation with Ali. It's just unfortunate that he became the champion right after Ali. Holmes was a great champion who never got the respect he deserved.
I can't understand what Holmes was waiting for in this fight. Ali in no way can hurt Holmes. Ali can only fire 1-2 punches and that's it. Holmes have all the stamina to let up all night.
My Dad believe there was a friendship between Ali and Holmes being sparring partners. Never he realized there's a bad blood going on between the 2.
All through the fight but especially in the last round you see the restraint Larry had. He could have teed off on Ali at any point but did not. You almost feel for Larry here seeing how he just did not want to humiliate a washed up Ali (his mentor) but had to so SOMETHING since they were paid to fight each other. This is really one of the saddest fights to watch from a human level on both sides. Truly no winners in this fight, Ali never had a chance.
@Gossage54 Holmes never had the killer instinct unless someone hurt him. Holmes could have thrown the right hand in this fight just like he could have done worse to Tex Cobb. The only person Holmes trruly wanted to hurt was Leon Spinks and even after that fight Holmes felt guilty.
He still had the courage, he just didn't have the tools anymore because of his developing illness combined with age. Ali did look good in the start of the 7th round when he was working his jab and moving . . . .
When you see this fight, everytime Ali moves just a little doing his dancing pose, the crowd goes wild and starts cheering like hell. That's how much people loved him and missed the days when he was the greatest.
ali was the product of greedy promoters who wanted to milk him and tell him he was the same man that he was in his prime...holmes did not want to hurt him bad, holmes would have ko'd him if he wanted...sadly
True, a lot of people criticise Larry Holmes for fighting an old man, but he kept on asking Ali to just quit but Ali kept on persisting and wanted to fight.
Ali did everything for Larry, he taught him, took him under his wing and had him as a sparring partner. Larry would never want to fight a guy that helped. After the fight, Larry was actually crying, because of what had happened.

@cozmic24 Than why do you delete your old comment.
Holmes can not take credit. Holmes is ok. He is no Ali, I agree, but you could not even whopp a 50 year old Ali, if you've never boxed
michaelyouth 4 months ago
@cozmic24 No. You would not beat Ali in his condition. If you've never put a glove on, you wouln't be able to take a punch from Ali,not even in here.

A prime Ali would have destroyed Holmes.
"People would rather watch Ali watching a Larry Holmes fight, than watch a Larry Holmes fight". - Don King
Funniest boxing quote of all time (IMO). It was in regards to Holmes inability to sell tickets.

@gjc82071 He was a great fighter. The only reason he doesn't get the recognition that Ali got was because he didn't run his mouth all the time.
