  • Thanks for sharing this! I have some doors to paint and had no idea how to begin!

  • store the paint cans upside down and the lid won't form a crust - just make sure it is on tight!

  • Great video, and excellent tip about painting the tops and bottoms. I'm currently replacing a door that is... you guessed it... warped! It's got a really nasty bow in it. I live in muggy Louisiana, and sure enough the tops/bottoms were unpainted, so it's no surprise really.

  • why when i pain the door , the door diffecult to be closed again afetr painting ..how to avoid this thanks

  • If you read many of the columns at my website you will discover that paint is simply glue with color in it. Thus, you must not allow the door to touch the frame for at least 3 or 4 days after painting. This allows the paint to cure.

  • Yeh..first thing I do when I open a can of paint is wash the lid, I also wipe under the rim, cos thats where you get a build up of hard stuff, especially if its a can thats been on the shelf in the stores a while.

I always teach my trainees to do the same, wash and wipe the lids and rims of the can when they wipe the paint back..it saves all the crud falling in it next time!

  • Great tip. Thanks!

  • I could have used this all-too-obvious tip a week ago when I made this very mistake and sprinkled my paint with dust. LOL

  • Interesting ATB...i noticed when I was in the states they actually sell empty paint cans, you lot think of everything, great idea!

  • Correct! I had to do that once. After that, I always salvaged my own, including the lids.

  • They do in England......

  • How not to prepare a can of paint..because if its got a thin skin on it you will shake it into the paint.

  • That is very true if the paint can has lots of air in it. That can was nearly full. To minimize skinning, I keep around cleaned-out quart cans and lids. I then store the paint in those. When there is air, I put in a little water on top of the paint just before tapping the lid in place. For oil paints, I use mineral spirits.

  • Also, try to paint with the grain of the door. Or after you are done spreading paint over the door try to make your brush strokes match the direction of the different wood panels as much as possible for best results!

  • We ran out of tape and time. We taped a *second* video showing the actual painting techinque.

  • you forgot to paint it :E
