I remember the first time I watched this series, I was around 7 (my first Masterpiece Theatre experience, and I've been watching their films up until I thought they lost their touch a few years ago). Yet, this is my first time crying watching the ending. Now that I'm more mature, I understand the perfect mixture of happiness and pain in the end. Soames and Irene finally making amends and putting everything behind them was such a remarkably beautiful moment. Thanks for uploading!
@CoachProc it is called blackmailing when one uses the other's love to make them give promises they can not fulfill under the pressure of love. Those who marry just to use the other party, deprave them, abuse them emotionally and take away from them fatherhood/motherhood are the worst kind of criminals..they lurk and bite those who love them...what a piece of shiny trash Irene was!
Yes, but I think that they both got over it and forgave themselves and each other. She knew that she had hurt him and felt bad about it and he knew that he had hurt her but in the end they were both able to move on and hopefully their children will be able to as well.
The book ended differently. Soames died and indirectly Irene was to blame for his death. Also, in the book she never regretted parting John and Fler while Fler never truly got over John. Pretty much Irene destroyed lives of many many people
Wonderful series; now go back and watch the the original mini-series from 1967. It's still the best thing Masterpiece Theater ever brought over. When I heard they were attempting this remake I thought, can't work; why try to catch lightning in a bottle twice? Well, I was wrong! And just think... you've got the book to look forward to....
@olympiapaz I see what you mean but she was practically coerced to marry Soames by her Step Mom and Soames shouldnt have agreed to the terms of the married. "If I'm not happy will you let me go?" They are both to blame!
He always wanted a smile from her. I am a woman and sometimes I feel he had been totally wronged by Irene with her stubborness driving him to his breaking point. I wish he would have a happy ending too, but his second wife ....sighhh....
sorry folks, that would look like a blasphemy,but...damian lewis just gave us a new meaning of galswothy!all the crew was great, but HE...HE left me speechless.I 'm watching now LIFE(there I SAW HIM first time)and his character is a lot more optimistic-a ZEN thing-is a cop in L.A.who's getting out of jail after 12 years, being accused-wrongly-of murder.nothing near Soames Forsyte, but still...LEWIS is giving his best self!!!
did you see it ?I simply can't believe it!it was the first genuine smile on her lips for poor old Soames!I looked all the episodes, but that was just moving!thumbs up for enjoy you tube!
Well.....3 days I have been watching both series......cannot even remember how I got to this channel. I was going to watch Wives and daughters but suddenly changed to Forsyte 1. It was captivating and like a good book, couldn't put it down.. Only the British can make such series. Damian Lewis is an extraordinary actor. All were wonderful but his performance was remarkable. I have seen him in many things over the years but until this had not fully realised his brilliance. Thank YOU very much!
I finally got to watch the end episodes.... thank you for posting. I started watching this program because I couldn't be bothered changing the channel but was quite caught up in it, the only thing is I never got to watch the end or found out what the big secret between the families were but now I have thank you again, thoroughly enjoyed it
Excellent ending. Soames and Irene finally forgiving each other and themselves in their own quiet way. I loved how they parted, and I was so glad to see Soames walking away swinging his cane and smiling. It almost seemed like he didn't need his cane anymore because he no longer had the weight of what he had done in the past so heavy on his shoulders. And when Irene said he didn't want anything, that made me smile and cry happy tears. I'm glad I took the time to watch this whole Saga. Loved it.
Fleur settled, but Michael is no Soames. Jon didn't love Fleur enough to be with her. Sad, but there it is.
The ending is very satisfying. Soames and Irene have made peace and the past is neatly finished. They can live the rest of their lives without any of that anxiety.
at the end, the two of them settled things between them. Maybe they would have done it sooner if so many people were not in the middle of them all the time. From Irene's first love to the end. From Sommes family and his not being able to think with a cool head. What a waste of a person's life. To be wrong about so many things.
i love this ending !! when Irene says"he didn't want anything" FINALLY since the day he meet her he didn't want anything from her, he came only to give. and that smile on his face as he's leaving, seems that he feels very at ease with himself now ready to finishing out his life knowing that Irene has forgiven him. I cried.
Brilliant! Thank you so much for uploading. I watched both Series 1 and 2 within a week, and our ABC channel here in Australia has just started playing Series 1 a week ago! I felt for Irene since the beginning although it was her mistake to marry Soames. Soames grew with old age and deserved a lot of sympathy in the end. Now I'm ready to read the books.
The meaning of "To Let" (the actual subtitle of Series II) became clear after watching the parting of the hands: To let go. This impression evoked a reflection on all of the characters' lives and how they each had to let go of something in some way to move forward with a new perspective and a new sense of freedom. This is my second viewing, and I'm even more convinced now than after the first that I will revisit this story from time to time and it and the characters will be a part of me forever.
@Notawesomeatall7 The sign read "For Sale or To Let". Why not "For Sale"? You have chosen the LITERAL interpretation. However, doesn't it make more sense for the title of a novel to serve as a METAPHOR for the deeper meaning of the emotions and interactions of the characters, as is true for most novel titles? For Soames, it is a double entendre: He came to see that gone were the days that by definition being a man meant only owning things; property and his woman. He had to let go of this notion.
this is one of the best series i've seen! the ending was perfect. it was so hard to find sympathy for soames in the 1st series, but the second series really showed him in a different light. this was SO well made! i think fleur will have jons baby and the story will go one forever!!!
It's a wonderful saga. Shows life as it is - people being human, making mistakes, paying for them, loving and hating, cheating and deceiving... It shows us what true love is all about and how one insignificant mistake can ruin lifes of tons of people... And the greatest ending of all - forgiveness is the way...
This I bet will continue, I do believe that Flur is pregnant with Jon's child and so the saga continues. I remember the insufferable French man telling Jon Flur was sick and the cousin asking the Aunt why are marring so quick.. Thanks for posting. Great series.
Irene and Soames are finally able to forgive each other and themselves. Great ending. Though, I was disappointed in Fleur's marriage. Sure they get along, but she is headed down a path similar to Irene's. Jon missed his chance with Fleur. He was always full of doubt and Fleur deserved constant love. I still beleive that they were meant to be, but life and reality set in. The ending is real and bittersweet.
@cutyariana George was the son of Roger Forsyte who wasn't in the series at all. He was James and Old Jolyon's brother, as far as I can remember.. So George is Freddie, Soames and Jolyon's cousin, basically.
Thank you for posting this I remembered falling in love for the series when I first saw it. I concur with most of the posters i could not find sympathy for Irene because she had a choice and I think she knew very well she could not love Soames he was to blame to for his possessive disposition but he had never been thought not to be like this as his mother once mentioned. But somehow i am satisfied with the ending there's nothing like the feeling of forgiveness.
I enjoyed this so much-thank you. Great adaptation of a great story.
Initially I felt sorry for Jon because Fleur at least married a young dashing aristocrat who's in love with her while he left the country alone and heart-broken. But then I remembered Fleur still took from Soames, and imagine that it will take time and struggle for her to discover true peace. On the other hand, Jon would follow his mother's path- recover from pain and become happy by following his heart, like his parents.
I felt so badly for Soames. He wanted so desperately for Irene to love him the way he loved her. She really broke his heart & never should've married him. But he did go back on his promise to release her if they were not happy so, in a way, he did it to himself. I keep hoping they'll complete the series and do the other books. I believe there are 8 in total and this covers 2. I immediately purchased the series after viewing it online for free. Thanks so much for sharing.
After all that i really dont know how to feel... good that jon and fleur didnt end up together as fleur sometimes came across as manipulative or not- because theres a sense of gain in the fact that Sommes FINALLY learnt something, or the sense of loss especially in jons case and the fact that their love didnt conquer all...
... ahh well a great series all together thank you so much for posting ive been up all night watching thiis.
A marvellous series. Thank you so much for posting. I think that Damian Lewis was quite outstanding as Soames and I ended up feeling a great deal of sympathy for him.
N1307Nass...i agree..I know that he was wrong but this whole series I have felt for him, even more than Irene!! Don't know if it was through the actor or not..great performance!!
I agree with you. I was wondering whether Irene was having second thoughts as she watched him leave. It must have felt good for him to believe that he was forgiven at last.
in my head, he felt good walking away... It seems he never wanted to be the way he was, but was not able to hold back his emotions, to me Irene was cruel to him from the beginning, in a much different way, couldn't really find any sympathy for her myself
@skrappiedoo ...I agree, she brought all this misery upon herself. She should have never married him to begin with regardless of situation in life. It was so awful to see her cleansing herself after intercourse with him so as not to conceive. I never liked her reticent and truly stone cold manner. I mean explain it away and talk it out already! This Saga was so poignant...I need a pick-me-up now.
@skrappiedoo: I too agree. My heart broke for him when he bursted into tears while laying on the bed next to her red dress asking for a second chance. I cried with him.
