This should be played at the beginning of each UN session and the Secretary General should get it emailed to each political and religious leader in the world so they can ponder on the effects of their decisions and actions.
Of all the remixes for Pale Blue Dot, I love this one the most because it maintains the image of Earth at the vantage point from which Carl Sagan was inspired to write. Simplistically brilliant!
I was shown this last night in my lecture, but the images were different... It was Carls voice, the pic of the pale blue dot - but also had a fly by of going outwards from us to the edge of the universe... Does anyone know where I can find that clip - it was amazing and together with Carls words made it more powerful of just how tiny and some what 'unimportant' we actually are...
Carl sagan changed alot of peoples lives he was a perfect example of how people should think. Whats so sad is the fact that every single version of pale blue dot combined amount of views are dwarfed by one justin beiber video or some other stupid video of babies doing something stupid its a sad fact the the majority of people cant comprehend the message that sagan was trying to show to the world and it is simply more beautiful then any crap that could ever be put on youtube.
Again, the brilliant sound of Vangelis, (Heaven and Hell album), accompanies Sagans warm voice. I wish Brian Cox and the BBC would remake "Cosmos". A wonderful, incredible subject.
Carl, why is the "destiny of our descendents" important? Remember, we're just specks upon a speck, which is part of a larger speck, among hundreds of billions of other specks. We are nothing, remember? So what's with the hypocrisy? Our destiny is that of the dinosaur. Get over yourself! Oh yeah...that's right...you're dead! So much for destiny!
I love this clip, from a man i never got to know before it was to late. Carl, Happy birthday. i wish you were able to know your legacy is stil going on strong.
Given the fact that Pluto is argued over wether it is a planet or not that makes it roughly the lower boundary for planet mass. Meaning a planet can be as little as 500 or 600 times lighter than the Earth. Given also the fact that several moons in our solar system are planet massed, the fact that low massed planets are thought to outnumber higher mased ones and how many rouge planets there are, it is just possible that planets may outnumber stars by several hundred to one.
Our unimaginably vast Cosmos loves Carl as much as he loved it. The moment Carl's terrestrial existence ended all the stars, nearby ones and ones billions of light years away too showed their love and respect for Carl by shining just a little brighter for a brief moment. Until the Universe exists Carl Sagan will be remembered!
@GodisTruthseekTruth there are many religions through which God is found. I don't believe that only one of the many religions on this earth is the only way to seek God... different regions of the world have developed different ways of understanding, obeying, and worshiping Him, but none are less valid than another. Once we get into that debate we start warring with another, and atrocities like the current strife in the Middle East occur.
Has God given the USA 9 strong warnings for her treatment of Israel?
You are invited to my channel to see a feature video that tells of 9 occasions.
Y would God do this? So that we turn around from a wrong path.
We should know that God created Israel for His Holy purposes, & He said He would raise up Israel in the end. If we don't know this, we are in darkness, and we should not be in darkness, because God has done too much to give us light.
@endgamex I'm Christian and I don't fail to appreciate how tiny we are in this universe. God is not crap, and whether you believe or not it's a small courtesy to respect what others believe. After all, in such a vast universe, aren't we far too small to be attacking one another's beliefs?
@kctimelady1 I'm not Christian and I agree with the fact that we shouldn't be attacking one another's beliefs. I don't agree with anyone who would come here just saying things like: "BOW TO JESUS! SCIENCE IS THE DEVIL!" Not saying that happened, but that is something I wouldn't put up with. Video here has a good point either way. =)
@kctimelady1 The problem isn't the beliefs, it's using those beliefs to justify atrocities. I don't care what you believe, but as soon as it begins to negatively affect my life through discriminatory legislation and blatant willful ignorance of science, I have an issue with it.
There is a little carl sagan in us all. Ive loved sagan ever since i was a kid he made me dream of the beauty of or universe, existance, everything. Pretty much all of the things you are giving up when you just say "God did" it and accept that.
I posted this vid on my facebook page as my response to 911 fear & terror - it takes people like sagan to give humanity a new perspective on our place in history & the cosmos
Carl's words of the conflicts people had for a fraction of the dot we call Earth reminded me of Arthur C. Clarke's words:
"It is not easy to see how the more extreme forms of nationalism can long survive when men have seen the Earth in its true perspective as a single small globe against the stars."
Imagine, Humanity, taking it's time to think, come together, and saying...WHAT THE HELL ARE WE DOING TO EACH OTHER, see that out there, LET'S GO THERE!
@lrosenb That's a wonderful thing to do. It puts everything into perspective. I think the whole series should be on a permanent loop on the web. That would be a great acknowledgement for what Dr Sagan did in my opinion.
@lrosenb Thank you so much for showing this in the classroom. So many students don't even know how to critically think because they've been told all their lives not to do so. I wish there were more teachers like you.
I remember watching this in sixth grade science class. I had forgotten for so many years until I found this video, it all came flooding back. I think it's a wonderful idea.
Thanks for putting this up with just the two photos of earth from billions of miles away. It works against the point of the speech when people put up pictures of earth's grandeur to play behind it.
