@vox1003 your kidding right? jimi was great, but he always sounded so sloppy. alex is playing it very clean. unless you mean how it looks like its on VHS..
If you guys have ever studied Neil's lyrics, you know where his influences in objectivism come from. I'm no disciple of anyone, but I'm running a congressional campaign that will be based on those same philosophies. I'd be much obliged if you'd all critique my video's for my campaign.
PS I also put a few of my old guitar solo's in there for you.
There are guitarists, musicians and then there is Alex Lifeson!! To the earlier comments about Page and Hendrix, they were great, but Lifeson is head shoulders above them and anyone else....
There is no comparison between Alex and Eddie, apples and oranges. Eddie is a pure technical player who happen to have some melody, Alex is a feel player who happens to be good enough to enter the technical space. Eddie has never written in emotional space of lead guitar that Alex has. Technically Eddie is better, but what the hell does that mean anyway..
without quest KZ, I have always said Alex wrote the book on Chord voicings, he gets more out of 6 strings then anybody, including Page (Zeppelin Fans Shout Here!)
Amen brother... I love Page to, but Alex is a monster when it comes to chord voicings. I'll take it a step further and say that the work he did in the 80's... Particularly Hold Your Fire is staggering if you delve deeply enough. I know people denounce that material because of the Synthed out nature and thin production, but the guitar work was miraculous.
I'm shocked. I wasn't aware there were many other fans of HYF out there, mission is amazing. OH, and coincidentally your bass videos rock, keep it up!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Eddie Van Halen has written some of the best solos in the history of rock. While I feel that Alex is better is some ways than Satriani, Vai, or Petrucci etc he is not better than Eddie. Back in the late 80's EVH had no peers. If he didn't drink so much he still wouldn't.
noel redding hated hendrix's version of this bob dylan tune so much that he went to the local british pub while jimi himself had to play the bass tracks.... this is a fact!!
Few things about this video, *Alex lifeson is the most under rated guitarist ever. * Does she really need notes to remember the words to THIS song..kinda lame. * The horns are out of tune. *Is that Michael Douglas on the acoustic? j/k
I agree with your comments. Lifeson is underated. Molly Johnson shame on you din't you use Dylan's crib notes in h-school. The horns are out of place and don't fit the song. The guy on the acoustic is Tom Cochrane.
Yeah Alex is more of a complete musician and has explored more musical territory. Much more intersting compositions and chord progressions. Sometimes I think EVH has never got away from adolescent rock. He seems so gifted but never stretched out musically. He comes up with really good riffs for the tunes but nothing that intersting musically overall. He doesn't strike me as near as disciplined as Alex.
By the way, Alex rips through this Hendrix tune flawlessly and seemingly effortlessly as well, just as one would expect from him. Could he be flashy? No doubt about it, but he's said expressly that he is bored with the notion that every song must have a solo.
EVH is superficially flashier than Alex with his tapping technique, which becomes uninteresting very quickly and this is why virtually no one does it anymore. Alex's playing has far more depth and complexity with its variety of styles, chords, progressions, etc. I don't think there's anything EVH does that Alex couldn't do if he were interested in playing that way, but EVH is not thoughtful or musically developed enough to play like Alex. He's about tricks, not depth.
I think EVH is probably more of a gifted player than Alex as far as things coming easy to him and having all kinds of speed and playing ability and at just popping solos off the top of his head. I think Alex has kind of developed himself more as a musician and stretched himself musically a lot more. Eddie always struck me as having a lot of talent that was never really tapped...like he never really ventured far musically. I don't know...does anybody else see it that way?
evh by far created more guitar wannabes then anyone else in the buisness. however you cant compare the two alex is more versatile but eddie has that incredible speed no other guitarist has ever had. evh was great for guitar he invented the two hand technique and made more kids pick up a guitar then anyone else. if it wasnt for him many of the modern guitarists you see today would not exist. Sadly alex lifeson was not that kind role model.
high alex, i am here too, with laurie johnson, she's soo cool with that. psst. hey alex, deflate your astrnaut suit and take your diaper off... this is it , 2008, reflate
Eddie Van Halen has said that Alex plays chords that he's never heard of. A common joke between Eddie Van Halen and Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top is that Billy will ask Eddie, "Hey Ed,....Have you found that fourth chord yet?"
Alex is so much more versatile than most people know! He never plays like this with Rush! Of course Rush is Rush and it just shows that Lifeson can do even more than what he does with Rush! One of my favorite guitarists and bands!!
Yeah, an incredible player who has elvolved so much. A player who has been willing to explore other avenues unselfishly! His combination of lead and rhythm are arguably the best ever!

Lifeson and John Petrucci are most definitely the greatest guitar players of all time... >.> i dont even know who EVH but it sounds like some crappy band probably... judging by the other comments
EVH Eddie van Halen. If you've never heard of them you can't be a lover of guitar music. Shame on you. Start with Jimi Hendrix then discover Vai, Satch, Petrucci and then go back to Hendrix because he is the ultimate guitarist and musician.
*smacks self in the head* duh its eddie van halen x.x i just now noticed that. I thought it was some initials for a crappy band. Yeah van halen is great, along with hendrix and satch.. vai's good but he's a dick
I agree 100%. EVH played himself into a corner with his style and never evolved. Lifeson has evolved year after year and though he may not shred like Satriani or Vai, he's a better, more original player than both. Lifeson is the best. Most good guitar players know that.
Alex has more signature solos per songs than Van Halen does. And no two Alex Lifeson solos are nearly the same. Rush has put out twice as many albums as Van Halen and the only line-up change was when John Rutsey left and Neil Peart came in over 30 years ago. Clapton was Van Halen's hero. Alex Liked Jimi Hendrix and Pete Townsend.
Wow Lifeson jammed it.
