I find it hard to breathe after a while even when using light 10lb weights when doing these on a flat bench. It gets a bit easier when you pull up with an elbows-in form since I think this shifts the weight via lats to your lower back. It doesn't get easier if you row elbows-out though since I think this keeps weight via rear delts onto your scapulae like at the start.
Incline bench seems like it might be a bit easier since the chest wouldn't be compressed as much.
Doing it on an incline bench like this looks like it would help take the lats out of the movement and focus on the posterior deltoid. Elbows-out would be the transverse extension role of the rear delts. Elbows-in might intiially help target the lats, but it allows us to pull the elbows higher via the hyperextension role of the rear delts.
Dear Christian - how important is the "squeeze and hold" in the contracted position of rowing movements (supported dumbbel row, barbell bent over row, etc)? Pausing in the contracted position seriously decreases the amount of weight used - one can probably receive overload in this contracted position, but the weight is too light to receive overload in the remaining part of the movement, incl. the stretched position. Thanks in advance for reply

I arch to breathe sometimes.

@biglabrador Couldn't you start by using the squeeze at the beginning of the set, then as you get tired, just focus on doing the rowing without it?
