when she looks down the camera at 0:19 its like that terrifying moment in Aguirre when Klaus Kinski looks straight at you and says "I AM THE WRATH OF GOD"
@CrabeVoOV ну вообще то это не есть хорошо, мимику надо контролировать, посмотрите на тогоже Паваротти, все спокойно, а на нее глядишь и правда кислоты объелась.
@bcn243 You don't always need the legato, it's not like she's not able to do it. It's a choice, it certainly has a power which is rare. Karina Gauvin does it otherwise, maybe you like that better.
----- ----- ----- Armed with torches and serpents, come forth from your blind, foul kingdom, you savage partners of raging frenzy, Furies, come to us! In death, scourging and slaughter we will follow you: teach us, whose hearts are enraged, to avenge this murderous deed.
The music is wonderful, Bartoli really sings very nicely and beautifully and it's good fun to watch though she she overplays a little bit to my mind... but why did you live all this useless applause at the end?
I love it. Even if people don't like her technique, it shouldn't matter. It works for her and she's still singing like that today and making CDs. It's not bad, just different.
I love Cecilia Bartoli. In my opinion, she is the best mezzo soprano nowadays. She is unique, amazing, wonderful! Such a beautiful woman and voice, with that burning passion and breathing control... she is absolutely owner of a technique that NOBODY ELSE has. I love her...for ever and ever. The best singer in this universe. THE BEST!!!!!
Sia in questo che nel suo "agitata dalla due e venti", a parte quando fa i gargarismi, non si comprendono né le note né le parole che canta; chissà che le era preso in quel concerto.

Oh dear. I fall into the camp that just doesn't appreciate Cecilia Bartoli's voice at all. To me, she's more of an aggressive vocal gymnast who abusively barks out notes and turns music into exercise instead. All her fans really adore her to death....wish I could enjoy her too.

Completely dreadful performance. The coloraturas are meant to consist of discernibly pitched notes and not of a succession of barks. I know, it is a matter of taste. I find it dreadful.
ummm i could be wrong but to my knowledge this is not a coloraturas piece but for mezzo countertenors of that nature and i believe she represented that very well...
The fast notes she barks are called coloraturas. Many, in fact most people obviously like it the ways she does it. Why, I don't know. I don't like it at all. As I said, a matter of taste.
This IS a coloraturas piece, you dont't hear ? And the coloratura have nothing to do with countertenrors. You can have contralto coloratura, mezzo coloratura (although the "mezzo" denomination did not exist in the 18th century) and soprano coloratura. Not one of these italian operas and oratorio has been written for a countertenor, they are just an ersatz for nowdays when we have no more castrati to sing these pieces, but the women often do it better than falsettists.
no, not everything about singing is a matter of taste. There are facts. She is a good singer. Period. If you hate her, that is your problem, but there are thing about singing that can be subjected to objective analysis.
Nobody would object that Cecilia is a good singer. At least I would not. Her passion is insurmountable. It is only the coloraturas where I find she just does too much to enjoy the result. Again, this obviously appears to be a matter of taste. I loathe it and some others do so likewise. Even more like it, why, will remain a secret. Objective analysis does nothing in this area because we are talking of subjective preferences. Sorry.
But you mustn't forget that this is baroque phrasing! I had my own difficulties in adapting to this kind of pronouncing coloraturas because I thought she couldn't sing them differently, more legato. But then I listened to her romantic repertoire and realized that she is the mistress of historically correct singing.
So you figure every other singer is historically wrong then? Because she's the only one articulating notes this way (ie: separately) so you tell Piau, Gens, Invernizzi, and the other Baroque Queens how wrong they are.
Baroque does tolerate less legato yes but it doens't mean you can to sing staccato-aspirato. And, I heard her sing Mozart's Exsultate this way. Simply sick.
That's music livid with wrath! What I adore most of all in Cecilia is her uncanny ability to pour all her soul into what she's singing. She may get a lot of criticism for this but I believe this is precisely what makes singing an ART and not some mindless coloratura chirping.
She doesn't care about looking pretty and sweet when singing. And she's right. At the end you can see she has to look around to remember where she is.
