Is this the best you can come back with ? I educated you about Gabriel's pre Genesis/Garden Wall days when he was a drummer. You thought he only banged away at a bass drum on stage. Of course, you being the anal, defensive type will say you knew that anyway. Your "accuracy" was merely a prejudiced opinion, given your predisposition towards all things of a Sussudio/ We Can't Dance pop shite nature. lol You're out your depth Giddy One.
In the early days, Peter would play bass drum with Genesis...hopelessly out of time. So his percussion skills have always been a bit of a myth, really.
@gideonquinn No young sir, I'm afraid 'tis you who is wrong. I don't need to check the Genesis history. I know my Genesis history. Peter Gabriel started off as a drummer. Before Genesis, he was in a group with Tony Banks called The Garden Wall. He was the singer. BUT before that, he was in a lesser known combo called The Spoken Word. He was their drummer. ; )
Seriously, when you play 1 instrument, it's often very easy to get into other instruments. I play drums mostly, but I also play bass, keys, and guitar every now and then. You just get this feeling for rythme and stuff you know? And PG has so much talent that it's probably even easier for him :)
Hi, the drummer on this show was Billy Cobham. Peter played only this part of the song. However, it's not simple see him plays other instruments, except keyboards, but we know that he plays flute, guitar, drums ecc.
Peter started out as a drummer before becoming a singer, just like Phil Collins did. I remember seeing Peter play drums during this song on the 1993 tour, but it's more impressive here because he's playing Billy Cobham's drums. Billy is a very techinical drummer with a very unique setup. Tough for anyone to get around on.
No, I'm very sure, he did not play the drums for Genesis. Not even very early on. He used to have a drum kit and used the bass drum at concerts, but he never was drummer with Genesis. His drumming career never really hit off. :)

He writes so well for percussion, I am not the slightest bit surprised that he plays as well as he does.

@gideonquinn You are quite wrong. Peter Gabriel is a more than competent percussionist and a good drummer.

@ThefightingCelt I'm afraid that it is you who is wrong. Check your Genesis history :)

Phil Collins eat your heart out. Hehe.

I'm fairly certain Peter is just tapping along with a drum machine here.

He played drums on this song too here in Brasil in 1993 at Olympia, São Paulo. I was there, for sure.

Manu Katche was actually the drummer for this tour. Very few have faster hands then him.

Peter da giovane sognava di essere un batterista... ha sempre accarezzato l'idea di essere l'artefice del ritmo dei suoi brani...
:-) thanks

Peter has always tinkered with the drums.

Not bad... was he filling up for his drummer for the whole show, or was it just for fun on one song?

@drumrcal Just right. That was the reason he wanted to use the bass drum on early Genesis: he was a drummer.

Wow I've never seen Peter play the Drums before thanks for this clip. I know he played the drums for genesis very, very early on.
Dannymusic1999 2 years ago 3
He actually never played drums for Genesis, Phil Collins did. And before Phil Collins did it was two other guys, but never Peter.
The tragedy here is at some point over the proceeding 5 years or so from this video, all that hair died and turned white lol.
TheCorrectAnswer56 2 years ago
Your right about the hair, lol.
It seems that Peter used to let others play his drums before Genesis while looking extremely nervous as to how others would treat his kit.
So yes after reading your reply I stand corrected. Silly me, LOL.
