  • l don't want to pick a favorite song, but this one is fightin hard for the lead

  • There is not autotune here, back when he was alive, if you didn't have the stuff to be a performer you didn't make it. Now, if you can half-way sing, they'll auto-tune you and you'll make millions, if Luke was to come back, he'd get on stage and bring these modern performers to tears in sheer awe of his greatness.

  • serious my friend

  • now this is unreal. thanks for uploading.

  • now this is brilliant. fair play to you for uploading it

  • Watched a program about him on RTE the other night. Gave a real insight into his life. He wasn't republican or anything like that, he lent his voice to lots of causes of injustice. Wonderful program and really sad. It was great to watch, as until a few montsh ago I'd never heard him. Now I'm glad I've been able to get some of his songs and appreaciate the great sound of a true folk singer.

  • THAT ist singing.

  • this is just amazing

  • Kelly's voice always makes me cry, beautiful :)

  • Very mournful, and sad to think he isn't here any more, RIP Luke Kelly.Great artist !

  • amazin voice

  • his voice was the finest and has showed me what true irish music is and just how inspiring it can truely be. thank you luke

  • the last time i heard this song was a wake in co. Clare sung by my grandfather who is passed since 2003 thanks for the memories kellyoneill.

  • a small tear formed in me eye when i heard this...

  • The High King of song.

He'd nearly restore your faith in Dublin, if you had any.

  • Today is the 26th anniversary of his death. A sad but as well appropriate reason to listen to this great song...

  • this is Irish soul --God Bless ya Luke

  • @spudseamus

    Aye!

  • Luke didn't even need music to sound so great, wow what a voice!!!

  • Brilliant,a true legend.GOD bless yer Luke.Sadly missed.

  • Magnificent !!

  • Sin Iontach

Ta Brod Ormsa Mar Taim O Eire

Mar Ta Luke Rud E Le Beith Brod Air

  • My squad in ROTC used to sing this whenever we were walking or waiting for muster. But we only knew a few verses, and Luke does it oh-so-much better.

  • i live in the U.S. gran mothers side is irish. i found this man on here one night while i was bored. after i joined the Marines i listened to him quite often. i like his mucis because it doesnt pretend to offer anything more than what he tells: no false stories here. the man was true awesomeness. i cannot imagine the solemn pride that must belong to his family to know that he brought so much happiness to so many....if only for a little while.

  • Hes actually a (now dead) member of a irish folk group called The Dubliners. But as you appear to know, he died too,too young.

    Great song btw.

  • @Tommy1977777 nice comment ,he is a legend here and makes any irish or who have irish blood in them proud of who they are.. ronnie drew is another legend with the band the dubliners the two played in if havent checked them out do so

  • well said may god rest his soul his music will echo through eterity.

    god bless you.

  • @Tommy1977777 only for a little while? My grandfather loved the Dubliners and I love their music also... and since it is recorded my great great grandchildren have a chance to love this music also. :)

  • Sounds like sean-nós singing...

  • It does, surely! I havent heard this track before, but the Gaelic feel is beautiful.

  • I was just a know-nothing kid when Luke Kelly died. Now I just wish I could have known him- what an old soul, with a voice of painful kindness.

  • samee ..

  • my family is from kerry., what this song says to me is, i may be at the bottom of the ces swpool but, i will never give up, i am a human, child of god, never ever wil I give up. never ever.

  • brilliant!!!!!

  • His voice is his best instrument! Beautiful.

  • Simply Superb...Untouchable.

  • Great version. RIP Luke. Legend.

  • Brilliant

  • RIP Luke Kelly :-(

  • Had a hot breakfast/of powder and ball

Fucked up shit. Beautiful performance. Thanks much for this.

  • An honest vetern's war song for every war

  • i second that

  • Truly profound lyrics! Used to hear this song at The Dog's Bollix bar in Auckland, NZ (when I lived there). Fell in love with it then and brings back many fond memories now. Tanks Kelly

  • i love luke kelly hes got an amazing voice

but on the other hand ciaran burke is a great singer to

  • the other versaion isnt ciaran is bob lynch, the forgotten dubliner:)

  • its a throw up which is the best version :) I'm having trouble deciding

  • i had it on lp before.i think ciaran burke was singing it.better than this version imo.good song

  • I once heard a Corries version of this and I tought that was good but Luke Kelly sings this beautifuly, certainly the best version I've heard.

The Corries tried to make it a cheerful song but since hearing this I've realised what a sad story this is. Thanks for posting!

  • a truly delightful ballad!

  • Kelly far play to you for keeping the legend of Luke Kelly alive on another medium that would not have been around when the legend was alive and some truely awesome recordings!

  • This is what an Irish song is all about..bloody brillant. Thanks for keeping it lit Kellyoneill.

  • Just one word: 'amazing!' Kelly, do you know where I could get a copy of this?

  • Its not available anymore, but if you want to give me your email address i could send it to you.

  • @kellyoneill Hey Just wondered if you could possibly send me this song? if ya can that'd be fantastic :) thanks for all the uploads btw

  • @kellyoneill Spine tingling stuff, what a song and singer. Thank you for putting this up.

  • Aye fcuking great, of all the recordings this is thre one where it feels like you're in the room with him, for me anyway. Hey Kelly please say what year this is and why it was recorded, not for a Dubs album surely?, ta.

  • Fucking fantastic. Legend to say the least

  • thanks for posting

  • this is still great but I like Ronnie Drews take a bit better. But I always side with the first version I learn so who am I to say.

  • @theovdhurk Must say, I dont like Ronnies version of this myself

  • @tony10396861 Ronnie was always good with the upbeat dancing/party-type stuff; for the solemn, somber songs, Luke Kelly was the man.

  • @ANOKNUSA84 Couldn't agree with that. What about the monto, black velvet band, Rocky road, etc etc?? Luke was better suited to those songs as well because of the power, fun, and warmth he had in his voice. Ronnie did the old dublinese songs, funny ones, as well as some unusual songs like Sam hall or my bonnie boy

  • Thanks kellyoneill for keeping luke's legacy alive

  • My Plasure mate!

  • kelly, whats the best website for getting the words to lukes songs?

  • Every time I hear this song, I think it is awesome. Does anyone else have a version of this song?

  • There is another version on youtube sung by ronnie drew. Its just called something like "ronnie drew singing live on irish tv in the 1960's"

  • wow. this is probably the best I've ever heard him. Raw emotion.

  • very good both kelly's top class

  • This is the only song I ever heard about the Criemean War(1854-1856).Luke Kelly's version is wonderful but Barney Mc Kenna's version with music is also terrific.

  • I guess the song was originally sung by Bobby Lynch. Bobby, the forgotten Dubliner, but his song was great stuff.

  • Totally Amazing. I always associated this song with Ronnie Drew. First time I ever heard Luke Kelly sing this song. Thanks kellyoneill. I love these special Luke Kelly surprises.
