This is a wonderful review! I wish more reviews were like this. I actually used it to introduce my friends and players to the game. The quality is a clear cut above anything out there. I really wish you guys would do one for Wrath of Ashardalon.
If you didn't like this particular product for not being catered to your tastes, deal with it for a little while, and you will likely get something deeper.
The last thing we, as gamers need to be doing, is projecting the image of elitism. that turns people off to gaming, and in turn, hurts the companies that publish them. I for one, am glad that for the first time in nearly fifteen years, a publisher is attempting to actually make a game with broader appeal.
I think everyone has forgotten about all the "casual" Tabletop RPGs that were popular about 15-20 years ago. There were TONS of them, all geared towards new or casual players, but could still be fun for more seasoned players. What WotC is doing, is trying to get more people into the hobby by introducing more products with greater emphasis on streamlined gameplay and presentation. If it works, we could be looking at a second "boom" in this style of products (remember Heroquest? dragonstrike?)
Heroquest was a fast, fun and simple game set in the Warhammer Fantasy universe. It paled in terms of complexity and depth to the -actual- Warhammer fantasy roleplaying game. What this -could- mean:
WotC publishes this Ravenloft game, but it isn't likely going to be the *only* Ravenloft material they publish, if it sells well. It's an introductory, all-inclusive game that is likely to spark a deeper interest in the Ravenloft setting and tabletop gaming in general. In so saying...
this is far far from a 'piece of crap' as suggested by the rather testy person below. it cool, fun, a snap to play, customizable, completely replayable, and solo friendly. *however*, if you're new to this series, i would suggest the newer Wrath of Ashardalon, which uses the same system but adds cool new stuff and a clearer rulebook. // Ravenloft = 4 stars. Ashardalon = 5 stars. check it out.
@MrBlairblack I do not agree with that. Ashardalon = 4 stars as well, because the quests are very generic in there and less entertaining than the quests in Ravenloft. Drizzt combines great quests with cool new stuff, so I would suggest that to pick up.
@Beckikaze Just to add to this comment: Currently, I play Ravenloft & Ashardalon by mixing aspects of each into them when I play. Drizzt I play as is from box. My players, & I really enjoy them all.
@Proletarian1917 Have you played the game? Because saying a game is crap without any argument is being an idiot. And this is not a game for die hard fans od D&D. It's a game for people who love D&D but don't have enough time to spend on the real version and/or don't have a GM. So stop only thinking about yourself, this game is awesome for a kind of people.
@PhilGerb93 I have played this, and I was disappointed with it. I gave you an argument: they ended White Wolf's license (who produced excellent Ravenloft products) so they could produce their own Ravenloft material. Which is what this is, and in my opinion it's a piece of crap that's got nothing to do with Ravenloft. That's got nothing to do with "only thinking about myself", drama queen. Being a drama queen is being an idiot. Now go be an idiot somewhere else.
@Proletarian1917 I don't care about your opinion, its subjective, this game is good for people who just want a good cooperative game with their friends without spending 5 hours of their life. If you like the old ravenloft games just play them? They already made games for you let them make some for us casual gamers who like D&D. I understand you don't like it but saying it sucks IS being an idiot i'm sorry.
@PhilGerb93 The only D&D products that are coming out ARE geared towards the casual gamer. And wtf, are you like married to this game? Why do you feel the need to tell other people they're not allowed to express their opinion on it if it's negative? Is it your substitute for a girlfriend?
