Back in the 80's, I had a Honda MB5, 2-stroke, 50cc motorcycle, which for some reason, this SAAB reminds me of (prob the 2-stroke engine). For a 50cc bike, the thing SCREAMED! Was pretty quick, and would hit 60 MPH! It was MORE FUN than the 750cc through 1200cc 'superbikes' i've owned since!
@beammark Well here in Denmark, there only on the road in the summer, because its a old car. Here its more rare than a beatle, but I think the beatle is worth more money than the Saab. It also depends on wich year it is. The latere models have a V4 engine, I belive the V4 ford engine took over in the late 60es. The older ones had another front, a shortere one, and they are the one to get. I love this car, my dad had 3 of them, the old 2 stroke, and then a V4 one of the first, and the a newere V4
man, that thing is old school.. think if you retrofitted it with modern technology. Tuned pipes, better port work, fuel inject(or better carbs), carbon fiber reeds.. ect That thing could hual asss.
@camry6 What's your problem? If you can't appriciate a 2-stroke engine, don't bother commentating. I'm tired of wiseasses like you who just have to comment to show off.. You're also wrong about the reliability issue. Less moving parts makes it more reliable than for example your Honda 750. It' wasn't reliable issues that made Moto GP back away from the concept. You win a lot of horsepower with a full combustioncycle on just one crankshaft lap.
Aahh, the 2 stroke car.....what were they thinking??!! It is great for a hobby, but not a good idea for mass transportation. Terrible fuel economy, a lot of smoke, a lot of noise, horrible reliability issues.........and the list can go on..............Think about it, if it was a good idea, it WOULD have caught on, and cars today would still be using 2 cycle engines. 2 cycle is great for small engines and sport applications, but not mass public transport. (same goes for the rotary engine!)
@DJonX7 try motorcycle in 125ccm 2T and 4T and then talk. You propably have never drive anything with 2 stroke engine. In lower displacement 2 stroke engines have more power than 4 stroke and nothing is going to change thit. 2T engines are lighter and have more resistant to over-reving because of less moving parts. Ther are not used today because of poor ecologists... The world speed record of 50ccm vehicle was made with 2 stroke engine.
@DJonX7 Honda CBR 125 4T 13,5KM | Cagiva Mito 125 2T 30KM. Give me example of stock mass producted 4 stroke in 125ccm or 50ccm which is more powerful. Even old construction - Simsons M541 in sperber 50 from simsons 2001/2002 catalogue have 3,75KW and ogar 900 have only 2,7KW. WTF!!?? It's so much older and have more power? BECAUSE ITS 2 STROKE IN SMALL DISPLACEMENT! Stop talking crap about 2T if you dont know anything about them!
@abracing199 Yeah they didn't stop using them because they had less power, they did because they polluted too much. especially for the amount of power they push out.
@OBcIO911 Yes, it was a Portuguese "Casal", it hit 225 kmph on a 49cc engine, 2 strokes of course. And everybody knows that the 2 strokes are a lot more powerful than a 4.
Excellent Saab !Lets make this simple: for every cylinder A 2 stroke fires once every revolution of the crank, a four stroke every OTHER revolution. Therefore a 2 stroke is smoother (ie 3cyl 2 stroke is as smooth as 6 cyl 4 stroke). Because of the power stroke (firing) on every revolution a 2 stroke is also more torquey. 2 strokes are simpler and less to mainain. They sound higher pitch due to more power strokes AT THE SAME RPM as a 4stroke.
2 strokes engines where used in many applications.
why the hell would you want a 2 stroke car they have less tourque than the 4 stroke , there not as reliable, and just not as clean i understand most 2 strokes give a much higher rpm range but i dont know just dont sound like a good idea .... but i do like the exhaust note ....
true that would be good in racing as long as its a small track but what about drag racing horse power counts big in a drag race .... its good to get off the line fast but what about keeping ahead .... lets not forget diesels also produce lots of tourque ...2 strokes produce low end tourque due to the face the motor only rotates twice to combust the gasoline ...
diesels have a higher compression however ... 4 strokes give better horsepower none the less .... but at the same time 2 strokes rev higher ... so depending on what your doing or race type either one could be bad ....
@wenel1291 finally someone with knowlege on youtube, you have all great points, it really depends on what youre looking for in an engine, as far as dirtbikes go tho, 2 stroke all day, but for a car in a drag race id take a 4 stroke setup, in a small track with lots of twists a 2 stroke would be preferable due to the speed they can produce out of the corners, a diesel setup however is mostly applied for hauling or for thick muddy tracks as they produce massive torque at low rpm
@spiritofthewolf15x Haha! I know about the "Mix Ratio", but I mean the poor lubrication comes from the lack of oil bathing under pressure to all bearing surfaces (pressure lubrication) such as the system used in four-strokes. Two strokes only rely on a misting of oil vapor found in the gas vapor charge as it flows through the engine, without pressure. This is MUCH less effective lubrication compared to the four-stroke pressure lubrication. Throw in high RPMs, and you've got reliability issues!
@camry6 You should have worked for Suzuki back in the seventies! Then they wouldn't have bothered making 2 strokes that would clock up a hundred thousand kilometres and more. Ball and roller bearings are perfectly content with fuel/oil mist, by the way.
I had heard back in 1967 that these three cylinder two stroke Saabs were fast. I was driving a new GTO at the time. One day I came up to a stop light along side one of these two strokes, so I decided to find out how fast. On light change I got on the goat in first, didn't smoke the tires but wound it out in first about 45 mph expecting to see the Saab in my rear view mirror. Wasn't there! Looked left and he was right along side. Hit second and wound out to about 65, Saab still there! Are fast
@6013welder im thinking of importing a trabant, its the cheapest option. or i might get a vespa ape car, or hell i could convert a 68 beetle and throw a rotax 450 in it!!!
@586guest2 the trabant sounds awesome lol but how much is it im in canada so i dont know if ican get it for under 5000 when i grow up if not ill just get a 4 stroke

@586guest2 i was thinking going with a 4 stroke as my first but after ill take out the engine and drop the trabant engine engine engine there is no way it will pass emissions testing though i was thinking taking a tabant 2 stroke car engine and making a dune buggy that would be awesome
