many people didn't like this movie adaptation.. I did, it scared me for the pars without the dialogue with the crazy people. just have a movie with a woman or guy running from hell and monsters like she did for most of it, that is the element of fear for me. when you make a riddle for the story to be solved and everything to end that's where they ruin it.

@erickamos666 Only saw the movie and the only silent hill game i own is Shattered Memories. But have you seen the movie? It sort of explains siren thing. The siren is used by the cult to alert the civilians when the darkness is about to take over the town. If you saw the movie, there are also other things that signal people of the proceeding darkness, like the birds flying out of that hole in the building they entered from the hotel room, or that bird the guys in the miner suits had in the cage.

@erickamos666 Apparently nightfall marks the phase where less visibility contributes to the ability to see the "real" Silent Hill. Kind of like how in Juon, Rika could only see the truth when she looked at the world between her fingers, with her view partially obstructed. Both are influenced by Japanese superstitions so it wouldn't be unreasonable to find a parallel there.
