The guns we can buy is limited to hunting rifles that require a hunting license. You cannot get handguns, semi-automatics or fully automatics since there are no use for those other than to kill other people.
@niclaz79 In Switzerland people in the military have permission to take their rifles and pistols into grocery stores. A lot of countries have good gun laws, it's not just the USA. There are uses for handguns. Handgun shooting is an Olympic sport. People hunt with handguns. Semi-autos make target shooting and hunting easier and more convenient. As for automatics, they are of high value to collectors and are quite simply just enjoyable to shoot. They are also sometimes used in state competition.

I haved lived in Panana and the Dominican Republic and both countries have gun laws similar to the U.S., even though this never gets media attention here.And never, ever do politicians in those countries talk about taking away gun rights like they do here. Many people also don't like being on a list of gun owners, as that may make them favored less during interviews for jobs in various fields, it may affect how their doctors or other professionals treat them, and it also lets criminals know who to be wary of thus making it easier for them to prey on the innocent. It's best to leave everyone wondering if I am carrying.

In my state (NY) I need to get a license, and pass a background check to get a handgun, and then I can only take it to the range. (not CCW for protection) Now I could easily buy a handgun on the internet (yes you can do that) illegally and CCW without anyone knowing. Not a very effective law if I'm willing to break it. It's unenforceable unless I was gonna follow it anyway.

Manufacturer looks up serial # > tells PD which gun store it went to > gun store tells cops who they sold it to via their digital records (they keep digital and hard copy) when they did the NICS instant background check. Anytime someone sells a gun as one private person to another we keep records as well for liability reasons. That's as much tracking as any gun owner is going to tolerate. (As it should be)

I live in Sweden, where only hunters are allowed to own guns (and only a limited few) and I couldn't feel safer.

And there's half a dozen other countries that have worse gun violence and accident rates than the USA. South Africa happens to be the worst on the planet right now.

The guns we can buy is limited to hunting rifles that require a hunting license. You cannot get handguns, semi-automatics or fully automatics since there are no use for those other than to kill other people.

@niclaz79 In Switzerland people in the military have permission to take their rifles and pistols into grocery stores. A lot of countries have good gun laws, it's not just the USA. There are uses for handguns. Handgun shooting is an Olympic sport. People hunt with handguns. Semi-autos make target shooting and hunting easier and more convenient. As for automatics, they are of high value to collectors and are quite simply just enjoyable to shoot. They are also sometimes used in state competition.

I haved lived in Panana and the Dominican Republic and both countries have gun laws similar to the U.S., even though this never gets media attention here.And never, ever do politicians in those countries talk about taking away gun rights like they do here. It just isn't discussed. And ironically, the gun laws of those countries are just basic laws, they're not apart of the Constitution, yet no one discusses repealing them when crime fighting debates come up.

Many people also don't like being on a list of gun owners, as that may make them favored less during interviews for jobs in various fields, it may affect how their doctors or other professionals treat them, and it also lets criminals know who to be wary of thus making it easier for them to prey on the innocent. It's best to leave everyone wondering if I am carrying.

In my state (NY) I need to get a license, and pass a background check to get a handgun, and then I can only take it to the range. (not CCW for protection) Now I could easily buy a handgun on the internet (yes you can do that) illegally and CCW without anyone knowing. Not a very effective law if I'm willing to break it. It's unenforceable unless I was gonna follow it anyway.

@fbiryujin I agree... but still... for example... when police stations find a gun and they wish to know where it was bought they cant do that automatically cause by law they cant make digital records.... so it takes weeks for them to look through mountains of paperwork... so at least do digital records of sales ... it would help so much in criminal cases.... It's none of their business to track some of my personal possessions. Guns are personal property. I don't need them tracked anymore than my kitchen table. It would help them even more if citizens could just fight back and defend themselves. Ask any U.S. cop (that deals with the public) and they'll agree their lives would be easier.

Manufacturer looks up serial # > tells PD which gun store it went to > gun store tells cops who they sold it to via their digital records (they keep digital and hard copy) when they did the NICS instant background check. Anytime someone sells a gun as one private person to another we keep records as well for liability reasons. That's as much tracking as any gun owner is going to tolerate. (As it should be)

Of course the US has more gun deaths. You don't want to search deaths though. Death/Homicide can be someone protecting their family from a rapist or whatever. You want murder numbers. Either way it will be higher than places without guns but the data shows that guns aren't causing more violence.

@KripDrip: That is the STUPIDEST argument against guns I've ever heard. Not nukes, just a reasonable means of defending ourselves against criminals and a tyrannical government, should it ever happen.
Its the citizen's right and responsibility to protect themselves because the courts have rules, on several occasions, that the police have NO DUTY to protect the citizens. Their duty is to enforce the laws. So that "protect and serve" statement on police cars can be misleading.

@mojosfun Yes it is true that guns are a far more efficient way of killing people however mind you the same weapon that can be used to kill innocents can be used to kill criminals. A gun being an inanimate object is neutral in conflicts. Also consider that just because gun crimes go down that doesn't mean that crime will go down. Ban firearms and there will still be gun crimes but there will be even higher knife crimes because it doesn't address the main issue of crime.
