Not a bad idea but next time try this:

1. Wash your hair or put some water on your hair

2. Braid your hair tight into 6-8 sections(depends on how thick you hair is) twisters at the end of the braids

3. Let the braids air dry or use a dryer

4. Sleep on it and take your hair out in the morning

The trick is braiding the hair when it damp because as the hair dries it will dry in the same direction of the braid which will create the curl. Use your fingers to spread the curls apart...don't comb..tc
