i have been trying to decide what DAW to switch to from fl studios because im going to be using a mac instead of a pc now, and logic was looking good because i heard it was great for fast music production and comes with a ton of samples and pluggins alreadys, but this video really just sealed the deal for me
hey Jamal. I just purchased Logic Studio 9 and in my EVP88 sampler i don't have nearly as many sounds as you have. I also don't have that "Factory" folder that you have for factory settings. Is this video with shown with "out-the-box" sounds or are those Rhodes sounds your own? thanks...
Hi, Thank you for this review. I am using a lot of plug-ins in a live situation. Until now I used the Kore system of NI, which is super for live situations. It never let me down. However, just now they decided to discontinue Kore (I still can't believe it...). I know that Logic has something like mainstage. Do you have experience with that (on stage)?
Great video Jamal. I am mostly hardware based and will eventually go to vst's. I think Logic is probably the one that I would go with, even though I currently use Cubase. Logic has better sounds.
I somewhat disagree however that VSTs are cheaper. If you factor in $499 for Logic and the you went with a Axiom pro 61 or MPK 49 or 61, you are about in the same range as the Korg M50, Motif MOx, etc. Start adding more plugins and you are at $2000, etc.
it may sound funny but i stopped using logic mostly for the color scheme, everytime i opened the program i lost my mood!! but logic is an amazing program i just wish it did the rainbow tracks like reason and pro tools etc.
@GospelMusicians lol i know just like when its done automatically, and theres something about reason that gets me, i think its also the fact u can use the program like a hardware rack, but than again its much easier to vocals in logic as well, and great playing by the way
I'd love to hear some of your urban gospel music using some of these plugins (the synth esp.) Have you decided on a price for your neo-soul plugin? When is it coming out??!!
Perhaps it's just me, but coming from Windows I get latency issues constantly. I'm now looking into the Mac world and am curious how latency is handled. As an expressive player Jamal, how is the latency in your setup and what Mac model would be best suited for this sort of thing without breaking the bank. Mac users don't seem to mention latency much so I'm guessing it's a rather non issue if correct. Latency really keeps me tied to hardware I find and adds to my reluctance to go software.
@JimAtwood Yeah it's the Windows machines man. They have inherent latency big time. It's Mac all the way for music. I do know people who use Windows as well for music, but you have to have a beasty machine and you have to reduce the buffer size to about 128ms. Ever since I changed to Mac, I rarely have latency issues. Mac and OSX is built for music in it's core OS, hence core audio and core midi, so it takes care of that. You pay more, but you get what you pay for :).
@GospelMusicians Thanks Jamal for the reply. You wouldn't believe how many people mistook my message for Windows bashing. I have a pretty decent Windows setup and get a tiny bit of latency that always becomes noticeable during expressive playing. I have trouble getting a good tight response. I've heard people on Macs have better results which is what I was curious about. I was mainly referring to triggering multi-samples with a keyboard and computer. Thanks.
@JimAtwood Well breaking the bank is what a Mac does, but the best bang for buck and power per cost is the iMac. This ting is as powerful as a Mac Pro and I've been seeing a lot of guys take it to gigs, because its all in one system. So you take your iMac, mouse, keyboard, and sound card and you are all set.
@JimAtwood Once you enter into the computer world of VST's you will save sooo much money and have zoo many sounds at your disposal. That's why it's so hard for me at this point to buy an XF or even a Kronos, because for the price of those units, you could have every single sound you could ever imagine.
@JimAtwood believe me...windows has nothing to do w your latency problems. In fact that was a pretty ignorant comment. Spend the money on a Pro Level Interface and card. I been using windows for years...and with Xp they finally got it near perfect...with Vista they took a step backwards..with Win 7 they leapfrogged past the bar...im really happy. I run a motu HD196,Motu1296,motu 424 Card, win 7, Sonar X1 Producer Edition, Quad Processor 3.0, 4 gig or ram, 4 internal Hard drives, Waves Diamond p

Hey! Thank you for this vid!
Just a quick question. Im a guitarplayer, and trying to produce around it with a midi-board, so maybe this is basic.
But what are you doing to get that kinda "rolling sound" between notes, except being quick on the keys of course haha
Thanks again man!
