All the antihistamines (Benadryl, Antivert, Meclizine, Dramamine) are over the counter (no prescription needed at most pharmacies. All the other medications (including Scopolamine patch) are prescription. I definitely recommend everyone to have these as "emergency" meds for a bad attack: 1) Ondansetron (Zofran), 2) Scopolamine Patch and 3) Lorezapam (Ativan) 0.5 mg Physician may be reluctant to prescribe Ativan but he/she should NOT have an issue for only 10 or 20 tablets.
Thanks for doing all this work on medications. It's great to get an opinion from someone with Meniere's who is also a doctor. I appreciate that in addition to the video, you had everything in the summary below (I'm definitely a visual person). Could you indicate what is over the counter and what is by prescription? I know you mentioned this on some, but not all of them. Thanks :)
When getting the Zofran or Ondansetron, ask for the Sub Lingual version 4mg which tastes better and works faster. In the US, it is now generic. It used to cost $5 a tablet. I would also ask for 10 or 20 tablets of either Ativan (0.5mg) or Valium (5mg) to only use in case of a severe vertigo attack. Your doctor may be reluctant to prescribe these because they are controlled substances and have some tolerance and additive potential. However, these Benzodiazapines work best to calm the nerve.
