I remember, I saw this on [adult swim] YEARS ago, and had to have it. It took me forever to find the DVD too. But it's still one of my favorites. Such a fun anime to watch!
series was good, but not enough eps and shit ending!! no kiss and they dont even stay together..in my opinion pointless!

only good thing about the movie was that allen looked soooooooooooo much hotter! lol poor vaulcan though! completely ruined his character!
woah I just finished watching the anime and crave more escaflowne goodness, but it's trippy seeing the same dub voices with these different character designs, lol.
@yarow122 the anime is great and much better than the movie, the movie has awsome animation and soundtrack is great but the story is it's only flaw, it's not that deep.
You ought to watch them both since the universes in both movies ar different from each other.
@kingjamie2 Ha, better how? Besides animation, budget, and action, the movie is inferior. The story is in shambles, confused, disjointed, and the pacing is not good.
The heroine is not a level-headed, confident girl like in the TV series but rather is suicidal, wimpy, and just emo on too many levels. Not to mention she has wings (???).
Don't get me wrong, the movie is alright and I was not expecting a replacement for the TV series. But it only gets 7/10 instead of 9/10 for the show.
The story in the tv series is a meandering, melodramatic mess. Isaac newton has a machine capable of manipulating fate itself, and to what end does he use this device? To make Hiomi kiss Allen so Van will be upset.
Escaflowne the tv series is filled with laughable, soppy, melodramatic, shoujo romance rubbish like this.
Also Hitomi is clearly far more whiny, soppy and annoying in the tv series than the movie, where she's like cool as a cucumber by comparison.
@kingjamie2 I won't be able to get this all in one comment so please read them all like I did. I was not intending to respond at all, but the claims you made are too silly to do that. I don't fault your love of the movie but rather your hatred of the TV series.
First of all, good thing that most Escaflowne fans think the TV show is better than the movie. Ditto for professional reviewers. Of course there are always a few loonies in the fandom.
@kingjamie2 The fate machine was used to do that because Dornkirk (remember spoilers, dude) could not see his future when Hitomi and Van were close. (emotionally, physically, etc.)

As for the shoujo romance, that is a critical quality of Escaflowne. To say you don't want that is like saying you want war without death.
The Hitomi in the show is much more realistic and likeable than the movie, where she is a emo, whiny, clingy girl with no good reason either.
@kingjamie2 Continuing from my previous post, the best way to summarize this movie is that it is like a decent fanfiction. With all the pros and cons.
finally, art direction, animation direction, action direction, etc. are a huge part of how enjoyable any visual piece of storytelling is. The fact that Escaflowne the movie understandably outclasses the tv series in every one of these aspects is hardly inconsequential.
@kingjamie2 The fights in the movie are nice (especially the opening scene with Van falling out of the sky) but they are just eye candy. There is no emotional moments, conflicts/struggle, or gravitas with those fights. (The exception might be near the end when Van meets the Big Bad of the movie).
Having just eye candy in a movie that is mostly fluff for a plot, has painful characterization that copies every stereotype in the book, and plain disjointed pacing makes this movie worse by a lot.
Yes. Though I don't actually know wether the series or the movie is more true to the original story, but they are a bit different, and the movie is the series made short basicly.
@jcudal32 This is a retelling (alternate universe) but it is missing most of the storylines (except for saving Gaea / mastering Escaflowne, blah, blah, blah) and the scale of the series. The true story was the series which really is a labor of love by the creators if you watch it. The show is less violent and gratuitous than the movie but does a much better job of sucking you into the world each episode creates.
@pratt123 thank you for clearing this up for me. I have been really confused about this after watching both the show and the movie. I agree I do like the series better then the movie.
@someguyoutthere110 YES!! Definitely give the show a try. Now, I must warn you that if you simply hated the movie, the TV series will only hold your attention for a few episodes.
But if you don't like the movie due to a lack of understanding, the TV series will explain everything to you in a logical, clear manner with plot revelations. There are multiple storylines that move fast but they all have good detail, good dialogue, and good presentation which lends a epic tone to a epic journey.

@artifical Me. This was my first anime, though I just thought it was a weird fun cartoon at the time. Though, Fox Kids heavily edited and cut large parts of the anime out. They did do a good job on the English intro.

@ImmortalDragon Idc Who frickinn' directs a so called 'live action Escaflowne Movie' ....The TV show was the BEST idc who you are or what opinion you have, it's true. And to screw it up a second time by makeing it live action?! That's an anime sin! Escaflowne was meant to be a-one time deal.... look this up folks, Escaflowne the Movie wasn't made by the same people as the TV show... so there.
@ImmortalDragon Same here. I would also love to see The Director who made Escaflowne: The Movie with all the good old special effects in it did a remake of Avatar in Anime since his style of drawings and 2D-3D mixed in together would be perfect.
I couldn't disagree more. Anime to live action is nearly never a good transfer, and Escaflowne would be among the most disappointing I'm sure. James Cameron? Why? lol
Seriously? You want Hollywood to rape more great concepts? When the fuck will people realize that Hollywood can't bloody do justice to something like this with a fucking movie?
@ImmortalDragon Peter Jackson would be better. I'm not a fan of Lord of the Rings outside of RotK, but the middle-ground aesthetics definitely feel just like Escaflowne... and with Jackson producing Blomkamp's District 9 recently, he obviously has a familiarity with mech battles now. That's just me, though. I like Cameron's older work, but his storytelling has been awful with Titanic and Avatar.
@TaruSpirit considering they made that comment a year ago..i don't feel like they were talking about the avatar live action..though i agree with you about the avatar live action x.x Katara had no hair loopies! D:<

@ImmortalDragon No. Peter Jackson. Look what he did with Lord of Th Rings. I don't need Allen suddenly having a magic ponytail and Dilandau running around hugging trees. Fuck Avatar. T2 was the greatest thing he ever did.
@Jormungandor Yes, because a director's atomatically gonna bring elements from some completely unrelated work and shoehorn them into another project. Going by that logic, can we expect Peter Jackson to add some fast food alien tycoons and puppets?
this looks like a good movie and i could understand if it is different fans wont like it....but i havnt seen or ever herd of the show. would it be even more enjoyable as a fresh minded viewer??
The series and the movie are very different in plot and tone. I have seen both and I prefer the series, but the movie is pretty good, too (I actually saw the movie long before I watched the show.) The movie is much darker than the show. If you're going to watch only one, I recommend the show.
Fans of the serial hates the movie. It's a great movie but very disturbing when you know the original show because everything changes in it : story, characters... All seem the same that in the original show, but all is deeply different. Darker, heavier, colder. But it's great, anyway.
yeah, it definitely looks like they've changed everything about it from the series. i've enjoyed watching the entire series, but i'm thinking about watching the movie anyways.
The opening sequence of the movie detonated my mind into little tiny pieces. I never got into the series but the movie was something else. Especially for the fights.
I guess the reason the body armour is "organic" and "alive" is probably again due to the fact that they wanted to make this more "realistic" for the movie. Like they mentioned in the movie, these suits need the blood of a Draconian to run. Either way, still one of my all time favourite series and I love both the series and the movie despite the changes they've made with the movie. I was pretty impressed with the way they've designed the characters and animated the movie though.
sorry also - what I meant about closer to reality is that they still use horses and sword, spears etc. instead of massive cable launching, cloaking robots :)
the creators of the movie more or less decided to creat an entirely new story line probably to make it closer to reality... yah... big gigantic biomechanical robot running around... that's DEFINATLY closer to reality HA HA. still, I heard the movie was actually well done (never seen it my self, but have read alot about it though...probably watch it just to see what the hype is about.)
I revisited and watched the entire seriers this past week, might I say Escaflowne is an anime show! (keep in mind I watched "The vision of escaflowne" all 26 eps.) Anyways, I knew there was a movie, and after watching this trailer I've decided not to watch it. It's all too different. I'll pass.
Why is the movies escaflowne(talking about the guymelef) like all oraganic? Its not like all machine like the series but theres like wierd drills to get ur blood and wierd things that strap to ur arms n legs like somethin alienish thats not machine at all?
the Move was quite different then the Show not just the Chracters and they did some different freaky stuff like Chesta and the rest of Dilandous Dragonslayers could for see things like Hitomi and Millerna hair was brown reddish hair and her sister Erise her Father King Austin her nephew Prince Chid Duke Fried Erya and Narya and Dornkirk wern't in it i wonder why
does anyone have the movie or the final episode uploaded??? Please! I just started watching this series and it's amazing. Someone message me or reply or something. I need to see it!
ya i luv vans voice.. but in the movie.. y is he all barbaric and wierd... ya its sango and miroku.. but in the movie.. isn't this just a diffrent longer version of the story.. hes barbaric and shes never been to gaya ( cent spell it) and he doesn't know her but he'lldo her bidding..
I love Van's Japanese VA, but I love how he sounds in English too. Escaflowne is one of the very few animes I can stand watching in its dubbed form. Tomokazu Seki(Van's Japanese VA) and Maaya Sakamoto(Hitomi's Japanese VA) are fantastic though, definitely.
yup, it is sango & miroku. i LOVE Van's voice! better than the japanese VA, i daresay. i dont have qualms with dubs (unless theyre exceptionally awful, and in this case, it totally isnt)... ive seen this movie in jap and i wanna see it in english now.
BTW! im in the process of uploading the whole series (subbed)! check my channel for details. :D

The series and the movie are very different in plot and tone. I have seen both and I prefer the series, but the movie is pretty good, too (I actually saw the movie long before I watched the show.) The movie is much darker than the show. If you're going to watch only one, I recommend the show.

this was a good movie, the series just has a better development in the characters, and the movie has WAY, WAY better character designs.

I didn't find this bad. I still prefer the series, with the fox kids opening theme. Give it a rent.

Fans of the serial hates the movie. It's a great movie but very disturbing when you know the original show because everything changes in it : story, characters... All seem the same that in the original show, but all is deeply different. Darker, heavier, colder. But it's great, anyway.
LTVCorp 3 years ago 3
yeah, it definitely looks like they've changed everything about it from the series. i've enjoyed watching the entire series, but i'm thinking about watching the movie anyways.
maxdoggie628 2 years ago
Great choice ! But be prepared to see something else than you can espect... The body of Escaflowne, the soul of something else...

in escaflowne the movie it's the same story like in the serial. nothing new.

coreliandude76 3 years ago
para nada
hitomi aqui es muy maruda y un poco suicida

they should make a relistic version of this
bloodangle666 3 years ago
Yeah, that would great! But if whoever is going to do it should do it right. (not like the new Dragonball film that is coming, out. -.-; )

The opening sequence of the movie detonated my mind into little tiny pieces. I never got into the series but the movie was something else. Especially for the fights.
dameandrake 3 years ago
I guess the reason the body armour is "organic" and "alive" is probably again due to the fact that they wanted to make this more "realistic" for the movie. Like they mentioned in the movie, these suits need the blood of a Draconian to run. Either way, still one of my all time favourite series and I love both the series and the movie despite the changes they've made with the movie. I was pretty impressed with the way they've designed the characters and animated the movie though.

i seen the movie its great to me, i still have to see the series tho.
Hegima1 4 years ago
sorry also - what I meant about closer to reality is that they still use horses and sword, spears etc. instead of massive cable launching, cloaking robots :)
MaydemPower 4 years ago
the creators of the movie more or less decided to creat an entirely new story line probably to make it closer to reality... yah... big gigantic biomechanical robot running around... that's DEFINATLY closer to reality HA HA. still, I heard the movie was actually well done (never seen it my self, but have read alot about it though...probably watch it just to see what the hype is about.)

I revisited and watched the entire seriers this past week, might I say Escaflowne is an anime show! (keep in mind I watched "The vision of escaflowne" all 26 eps.) Anyways, I knew there was a movie, and after watching this trailer I've decided not to watch it. It's all too different. I'll pass.
BlueNami 4 years ago
Escaflowne... movie? Wtf? By the looks of the trailer, it's like an entirely separate story, but with the same characters.
I'll have to check it out.

Why is the movies escaflowne(talking about the guymelef) like all oraganic? Its not like all machine like the series but theres like wierd drills to get ur blood and wierd things that strap to ur arms n legs like somethin alienish thats not machine at all?

ya i luv vans voice.. but in the movie.. y is he all barbaric and wierd... ya its sango and miroku.. but in the movie.. isn't this just a diffrent longer version of the story.. hes barbaric and shes never been to gaya ( cent spell it) and he doesn't know her but he'lldo her bidding..
mzXhottie 4 years ago
I love Van's Japanese VA, but I love how he sounds in English too. Escaflowne is one of the very few animes I can stand watching in its dubbed form. Tomokazu Seki(Van's Japanese VA) and Maaya Sakamoto(Hitomi's Japanese VA) are fantastic though, definitely.
angelicSTRIFE 4 years ago
yup, it is sango & miroku. i LOVE Van's voice! better than the japanese VA, i daresay. i dont have qualms with dubs (unless theyre exceptionally awful, and in this case, it totally isnt)... ive seen this movie in jap and i wanna see it in english now.
BTW! im in the process of uploading the whole series (subbed)! check my channel for details. :D

BigBadBookworm 4 years ago
Well, the escaflowne series has been created in 1996, Van was born before Sasuke ^^ So the fact is: Sasuke is a little too much like Van XD
