  • Can you believe there are still people out there like McCarthy. They are full of nothing but propaganda. The Cold War ended 20 years ago. There is no Soviet Union anymore. We do alot of business with the biggest Communist country still left in the world. We use cheap Communist labor and import cheap Communist products into Capitalist America, so that Big Capitalist Coporations make nice Capitalist profits, and citizens of Capitalist America have no Capitalist jobs.

  • TRUE HERO R.I.P. SENATOR MCCARTHY

  • Sure McCarthy may seem extreme today but he was correct, the Communists did have ambitions to destroy Western Civilization; they did not succeed, but they would have liked to.

  • Of course a communist is going to brand McCarthy a fascist. Most of us, including me, weren't alive at this time. Unfortunately our public schools don't teach the real threat that Soviet communism was back then. Many foreign communists that fought on the Republican side were either whacked by NKVD hit squads in Spain, or lured to the USSR and caged or killed. A lone communist back then, was frequently approached by Soviet agents, if you were in power/influence circles. McCarthy was correct.

  • A Fascist in charge of a Communist witch hunt, I feel sorry that the US has this in it's history books.

  • lol look at this anti-democratic crap. Wheres your First Amendment. 1950s cold war paranoia at it's finest

    Dennis v US (SC)

    Yates v US

  • communism is not evil or ill-intentioned, just the people who manage to grab hold of the power. nothing wrong with the system, it's the greedy, corrupt leaders who try to use it for their own advantage.

  • @NDNSupport A bunch of nut jobs in congress. Just like we have evil dictators in the world who gain power, we can just as easily have corrupt politicians in our government. The worst part is even a president does not legally have the power to get rid of them..

  • You have the liberty and freedom to believe and think as you wish... so long as it is our way. The American way.

  • McCarthy was never wrong.

  • What Communism became and what the Communist Manifesto read are two completely different entities. Yes, The Communist Manifesto had usable and theoretically successful ideas in it but Communism became the form of government used when the government they had before wasn't working and the new government wanted as much power as they could acquire. Corruption makes the Communist Manifesto nothing more than a historical artifact with a few good lines of advice in it.

  • Philip Jessup was chairman of the Institute for Pacific Relations, a communist agent-infested policy group that advocated strongly against Chiang Kai-Shek and in favor of Mao in the late 40's and early 50's when the future of China was still in doubt. He bears some responsibility along with the outright Stalin agents in the institute, for Mao's mass murders that followed.

IPR members such as Owen Lattimore defended Stalin's purges in the 30's.

  • History has proven this man was correct. Why do you pinko losers continue to lie about him?

  • i hate fucking communists

now china is a state capitalist country and reforms in cuba its great news

that communism is almost dead the world over

and p.s im a british european citizen and europeans hate communism but not as much as the usa but close too

  • @jopeon Have you ever read the communist manifesto? If you dont feel like it try the play "MArx in soho". You may then see the differents in between what happend and what was written in communism.

  • You know what the big irony of this is? Most of the people that McCarthy targeted actually WERE Soviet spies trying to undermine American confidence in capitalism. We found that out after the fall of the Soviet Union, when secret documents were declassified.

  • We have been infiltrated by Communists!

  • Mcarthy knew how to handle commies, he used their own technique of show trials against them.

  • If only we could get Joe somehow reincarnated. He'd have his hands full with that bunch in the White House. Somebody's got to say it.

  • McCarthy was right in the 1940's and the 1950's and McCarthy is still right today in 2010!! The person doing the voice over for this video is 100000% wrong period! McCarthy was a great man indeed! A++++ The left wing and or liberals will always hate America! If you don't like America and if you do don't like Capitalism then you need to move out of America now and move into a communist or a socialist country!

  • I listened to a fascinating programme on British radio the other day which revealed that in fact Joe McCarthy was right insofar as he said that the US establishment was riddled with communist agents. They had on some ex-Soviet general who said that NO OTHER COUNTRY was so heavily infiltrated by his people as the USA. So there WERE reds under the bed! Joe McCarthy was no saint, but still, he served freedom well.

  • Damn, McCarthy got his ass handed to him here! Why don't we ever see speeches like this anymore?

  • Lord bless mr. McCarthy

  • the jewish spy Jonathan Pollard advised the USA government never to allow any jews access to their secured files because the first loyalty would always be to the Communists or Zionists. USA government officials allowed the AIPAC spies Steve Rosen and Keith Weissman to skate free because the jews have totally controlled of the US dollar since 1913.

  • McCarthy's best friend in the US Government was House Speaker Joseph Martin while the person in the government who was in the greatest sympathy with this speaker's words was then US Sentaor John F. Kennedy who because of this was later elected US President in 1960 because he restrained Jospeh McCarrthy and Joseph Martin!!!

  • McCarthy was anti-Commie while Stalin was killing 20+ million people. Socialists were blind to the terror and wanted to import it to the West. In the USSR all the loudmouths, like those who spout nonsense on Youtube were jailed or executed. But the West protects even the freedoms of insane lefties. Joy.

  • @marcusbondi

There is a huge difference between Stalinism and Communism.

Sending dissidents to death camps is not my personal view of the worker's Red Paradise:-)

  • @marcusbondi So you think it is right to take away peoples liberty and throw them in jail? Who gives a fuck about Soviet? This was America, a country that said it loved and respected freedom, but wanted to take away peoles rights just because they had different opinions. Way to go. Way to go.

  • The Communist Manifesto must have had some good ideas in it, if it made the rich and powerful of America quake in their boots so badly, that they felt that they needed to terrorize & brainwash the public into a state of paranoid mass-hysteria, crush anyone who wasn't fooled by their propaganda, and stomp out every spark of it everywhere on Earth.

Fortunatly, you can't kill an idea.

  • No. The commies in America were not enough to fill a telephone booth. The commies in Russia were not enough to fill a telephone booth either (but they had plenty guns in their hands there). But the system on both sides wanted to create martyrs. What the maccarthyites in America were saying was this "hey, let's call everybody communist - if we do that everyday we 're gonna be rich". They caught some real ones, no doubt, at the same time as -deliberately- creating a scare campaign.

  • @SinnFein4ever Unfortunately, that idea sucks.

  • @SinnFein4ever

Er, some rich and some powerful did quake but the Banks of the U.S, financed the Bolshevik Revolution. No, subversion is very real and Senator McCarthy proved to be right. It is a scourge, and your right you can't kill an idea. Luckily others have paid a high price in death, war, famine, and pestilence for that idea. Your ideas suck.

  • @SinnFein4ever, actually the Communist Manifesto made us Europeans kill our own kings, kaisers and tsars only to replace them with zionist extremists! You don't know what communism is because they don't teach you about it in school or on the ol' telly.

  • Especially when the American constitution is almost an identical twin of the communist manifesto. Just less wordy.

  • I love this comment, i think im going to quote it for later use. Maybe history fair XD,

  • @SinnFein4ever I don't think so, McCarthy was right but the Communists were more powerful than one man, now it has gone down in history as a "scare" and "Witch hunt." They killed 30 million plus people in Russia, that is a scare. Then they went to xsrael and are killing off the Palestinians, so there ya go, frightful. They now own the US.

  • Wow this sounds oddly familiar.

  • McCarthy was an alcoholic, he found an outlet for his delusional thinking and paranoid thinking, the America political system, the Soviets had there own alcoholics driving there agenda the same way, no one sees this. It is the truth.

  • At a time when America was being infiltrated by agents of the most murderous empire in human history, McCarthy was the lone voice who stood against tyranny. The VENONA Project files, declassified in 1995, provided indisputable evidence that nearly all of those McCarthy accused were traitors to America. No critic has ever brought forth a single documented case of someone being wrongly accused by McCarthy.

  • just to inform, alothough i do hate the Soviet Union, they are not imperialists, they were just a communist country

  • You're wrong on so many levels. First, it would add more credence to your cause by acknowledging that McCarthyism wasn't just the crusade of a sole Senator but an Anti-Communist crusade carried out by a whole coalition of bureaucrats, politicians, investigators, etc....

To your last point, all I have to say is Army-McCarthy hearings. I have DOCUMENTED EVIDENCE of McCarthy targeting Terry Rosenbaum, a TU teacher, wrongly accused of Communism. Here is to the alcohol that killed McCarthy.

  • @SenorZorrozzz. You are a breath of Fresh Air on this site. Absolutly Right. VENONA is to a Communist what sunlight is to a Vampire! If there was no other evidince other than the Communist in the White House today, that would be enough to prove McCarthy right. A new book "BLACKLISTED BY HISTORY, THE UNTOLD STORY OF SENATOR JOE McCARTHY" by M. Stanton Evans is a great FACTUAL source material. Keep up the good fight.

  • My pitch to today's nazty little neo McCarthys is: "Are you now or have you ever ben a member of the NeoCONTRICK Party ? Answer the question ! Answer the question !! Answer the goddam question !!! "

  • nope...have you?

  • Jessup was part of the FDR team & it was full of commie reds. That's why they went to help Stalin before they went to help Churchhill. The democrat party is now the AMerican Communist party. Just compare the website of the DNC & CPUSA.

  • Mr Helldogger, you must have slep through your history lessons at school, presuming you went at all. For your information it was imperative to help Stalin and keep Germany busy on the Russian front so that pressure could be taken from Britain.

FDR saved your country, whether you acknowledge it or not.

  • Right on, brother.

  • I can't believe we let paranoia consume us like it did. You just can't step on people's right to be a free thinker because you disagree with what they're thinking. It's a very interesting part of our history, though.

  • It's happening again...

  • "You are being accused of witchcraft, unless you name others in your witch circle, you will be condemned to death." -1690s

"You are being accused of communism sympathies, unless you name others in your underground communist group, you will be black listed, and might be put to death." -1940s

"You are being accused of terrorism sympathies, unless you name other in your terrorist group, you will be thrown in jail and black listed." -2000s

    good thing we learn.

  • Badda bing, badda boom! That is because the idea of the interrogations and false accusations is not and never has been to find and remove perceived subversives so much as to terrorize the general public with fears that they also could be falsely accused if they displease anyone in power in any random way.

  • Comment removed

  • Jesus dind't sent anyone to gulags.

  • @thesherife whats ur point?? jesus didnt sent anyone to guandanamo or abu graib either... but just by listing what jesus did or didnt do, why dont we focus on which system is better?? one that creates a crisis on its own just to stirr things up meanwhile it drives several million people (globaly) to unemployment and poverty, or one that ensures the basics for ALL its citizens??? (im not american, so please forgive my mistakes in english)

  • @ccrunner141414 Well said. One of my favourite ever quotes is "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

  • @ccrunner141414 history is repeated by those who dont study it

  • @ccrunner141414 Great freaking comment

  • That is Ambassador Philip Jessup. He was accused of Commie affiliations in 1950 by McCarthy and he was able to testify and defend himself in 1951. He was exonerated but there are still people who say McCarthy's allegations against Jessup were correct. Either way, his career was severely damaged by this.

  • These days we have a whole new McCarthy. It seems that the new "Un-American Activity" is simply being in business. I half expect to see trials, "Are you now or have you ever been the CEO of an American corporation."

  • I should think so, all those greedy, pigish excuses for humans.

  • I hope McCarthy's death was painful as fuck. Slimeballs like him are why conservatives are viewed as brainless lunatics.

  • McCarthie was right the state was over run with commies Fabiums working for the downfall of the US. Sadly he was shouted down and defeated by sheer numbers.. The same 5th colum is still running the state dept. Thanks to peaple lik you gorrilla .

  • McCarthy was well-intentioned, I'll give him that. But his methods were nothing short of bullying.

  • that's b/c people wre severely undermining the level of power communism wold gain in our own government. Truman, actua,ly had soviet spies working for dept of defense, and treasur dept...Thats is not something to take lightly

  • Also, it's spelled "like" not "lik" and it's spelled "column," not "colum".

  • I believe Senator Joe McCarthy had access to the VENONA DECRYPTS which justified his every question. Senator Joe McCarthy is an American hero.

  • Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party of the United States?

  • i have to create a museum exhibit based on the mccarthy era and its effect on labor history and first of all mccarthy was a liar about all of it. he had no list. the only list that ever exhisted was created by the senate after a series of screenings but mccarthy made the accusations soley for personal political gain.

the communist accusations were not even the first time he did somthing like this he ruined reputations of a number of political opponents as well.

  • McCarthy was right about EVERYONE. Venona and the FBI proved him right. The lists were genuine, in some cases provided by the FBI because the Democrats in power then were subserviant to the Soviet Union and not the American people. Very similar to todays Democrats, they're owned by Soros and The Shadow Party.

  • So Eisenhower is a communist then? I mean seriously what the fuck?

  • McCarthy was right about everyone he claimed was a communist.

  • yeah you dumb shit?? By contradicting everything this country stands for? He was right? By destroying the life of my grandfather and mother because my grandfather (Lee Sabinson) refused to name names, he couldnt find work and had to leave the country? A law abiding American who loved his country..The will of the american people is the way...

  • Cool it with the "dumb shits" I don't want to have to start deleting comments.

  • @skymunro. Just curious, what country did your grandfather go to?

  • damn right, there should be a holiday for mccarthey-lee sabinson was a communist -refusing to expose other traitors-you should be ashamed to even admit you are kin to him

  • ha ha ha... sorry, playsetman. we don't allow holidays in America for fearmongers. if we allowed that, you'd want a holiday for the KKK and Hitler. sorry, not in this country!!!

  • who was this individual? What was his job and why was he significant?

  • who is speaking???? i really need to know for my paper!

  • My problem with Mc Carthy is not his concern about American traitors in the Government, but his tactics. Guilt by association is wrong, always wrong.

  • you have every right to be a communist, this is America you can be what you want.

  • You did not have the "right" to be a communist spy or agent of influence working for or with State department, Treasury etc sending classified material to Stalin and manipulating US policy in order to assist communist despots-which is what happened in the 40s with China. People have been misled for decades about this matter. Stan Evans' new biography of McCarthy shows in detail from the unclassified Executive Hearings, FBI reports and Venona transcripts how Mc Carthy was mainly quite correct.

  • One absolutely has a right to be a communist, socialist, liberal, conservative, radical, reactionary, anarchist, Christian, Jew, Moslem, Catholic, Protestant, etc., in this country. It is when one acts to overthrow the government by force, criminal intrigue, treason or sedition that one become subject to the laws. We have the right to advocate all political, social, economic ideas in the marketplace of ideas or through our political/governing system; to pursuade but not via forceful overthrow.

  • thak you for being a voice of reason to te ignorant by choice and those who are un educated on the subject...A very dark part of our nations history which we tend to overlook, along with the Japanes containment camps, Civil rights, and the persecution of natives, this too is up there as Americas crimes against humanity

  • Who is a voice of reason? stillrob420. Of course you have a right to be communist but and underground party is illegal in the US. The Communist party in the 50's was underground and mainly an arm of the Soviet Union. He missed the point.

  • If you think Joe McCarthy is bad, look up Cardinal Spellman (of 'Smelly's War' fame), or even look on You Tube at that awful demogogue, Fulton Sheen. For a truer version of Irish genius, however, see Dave Allen, George Carlin or Dermot Morgan ('Father Ted').

  • For someone who hated communism, McCarthy acted allot like Stalin

  • blacklisting someone for communism is against freedom of thought

  • Making such a blanket statment suggests that you know nothing about the word "treason"

  • Your grandfather was rejected and condemned by the public. Instead of leaving the country, he could have worked using a different name, like the rest of the communist that were "blacklisted" by the public.

The question they were asked was : Are you or have you ever belonged to the communist party? Is nobody´s fault if they pledged the 5th. Eliah Kazan answered the question without invoking the constitution and he was blacklisted by his former comrades.

  • Nobody was "blacklisted" by the committee. They had no power to blacklist. Employers , like movie studios, feared public boycotts if they had people who were communists or "communist sympathisers" on the payrol. So the HCUA investigations into communist influence in the entertainment industry led to these things happening. McCarthy had nothing to do with any of those investigations (a widely believed historical inaccuracy), he was purely concerned with security matters within the government.

  • Sir Moses Finley was "black listed." If a school hired him, that school would have lost all public funds.

Finley left to England for work, and became one of the greatest classical historian of the 20th century.

  • my grandfather was Lee Sabinson a man who was blacklisted during the McCarthy era. In 1952 he took himself, my mother, and his wife and other daughter to England b/c he couldn't find work here in the US. One a prominent and well respected Broadway/Hollywood producer he lost it all b/c he wasnt to be interrogated and bullied by a undemocratic assembly and hearing. He never named a name. Lee Sabinson after 7-8 yrs in England came back but to never regain the same notariaty as he once had.

  • Your grandfather refused to testify, so instead of owning up to his crimes, he was forced to fire his maid and leave the country. I am sorry for his loss.

  • my grandfather, Lee Sabinson was blacklisted, he refused to name names, my mother, aunt, and grandparents had to pack up nd leave this country in 1952 b/c my grandfather couldn't find work. As a political refugee he and his family lived in England for 8 years there after. He was a prominent Hollywood/Broadway producer who never quite picked his carreer back up to the same notariable status as it once was. He was never a "Communist." Just a man who wanted to better the ideals of an old Nation.

  • Who blacklisted him?

  • Uh, the ROMAN inquisition??? That must have been left out of my history books. All of them. When exactly was that?

  • sebreatnach, you are a confused individual.

  • The MacCarthy trials were the Roman INQUISITION transferred to American centuries later... the crusade against Communism was orchestrated by the Catholic Church in tandem with its crusade against the Jews and its promotion of Fascism: the one cannot be conceived without the other. The unity in hatred engendered enormous power in the church worldwide...

  • It was not "orchestrated by the Catholic church". It was about Soviet agents and sympathisers passing Stalin classified material and making policy in the US Government and its agencies to aid communists like Mao, and help such monsters into power-where they held real inquisitions, committing murder on an industrial scale.

Nobody was killed or was even sent to prison by Joe Mc Carthy. Can't blame people for crediting the nonsense about the "Red scare"-they have been lied to about it for decades.

  • The sad reality of the HUACC, Joe McCarthy, Reagan's & Schwartz's CHRISTIAN ANTI COMMUNIST CRUSADE, the John Birch Society, Herb Philbrick's I LED THREE LIVES, et al., was that their fanatical tactics played into the hands of the Soviets. They spread paranoia, fear of one's neighbors, fear of any kind of political or religious dissent, illogical division between family, former friends & fellow loyal Americans. They spat on the constitution and the very founding principles of the USA.

  • My group is doing a project for National History Day (NHD) and we are writing about McCarthy and his effects on those who were blacklisted. Since you seem to know a lot we were wondering if you were knew about McCarthy and if you were a credible source... Please respond back to this message we would really like to be able to use you as a source. Thanks

  • Of course the MacCarthy trials were designed to effect what has in fact happened by those on this WebPage who are against the trials. What do you imagine is wrong with being a communist or being a communist thinker or sympathiser? It is presumed by everybody here that have such political thoughts as Ho Chi Minh are somehow terrible! Why? Is it because they are Atheistic?

  • McCarthy trials? McCarthy held Senate committee hearings. Look up the history in "Venona" and Stan Evans McCarthy biography. The concern of McCarthy was communist agents in government bureaucracy. There was an appalling problem with spies and agents of influence, especially in the Treasury and State department. There is solid proof of this now. The consequences were not trivial-China probably fell to the killer communist Mao because of agents and sympathisers in the State Dept in the 40s.

  • It's about time somebody spoke the truth!!! Thank you!!!

  • You mean revisionist history has concluded that, johnbidochka. If you have such a problem with American Foreign Policy, perhaps you should move somewhere else that you feel is superior. Perhaps to one of the many countries that exists because of the billions of dollars of American aid that is distributed every year around the world. It sounds to me like you're the one who hasn't learned anything, sir.

  • McCarthy died a drunk. Let's hope his end was slow and painful. His little lapdog, Roy Cohn, was a self hating homosexual who died of AIDS- denying to the very end that he was gay. His end really WAS "slow and painful"-after he was disbarred by the state of New York. They both deserved every bit of it,

  • well yea plus hepatitis C

  • When Owen Lattimore testified before McCarthy's committee during the same period (1950), he said near the conclusion of his testimony, "I do hope the Senator will, in fact, lay his machine gun down. He is too reckless, too careless, and too dangerous to have a license to use it". Lattimore was cleared, but Republican forces were tipping the scale in U.S. politics at the time- and McCarthy delivered votes for Eisenhower in Wisconsin in the 1952 presidential election- and that's why he....

  • We knew it then, but we know it more fuller now that most of the evidence is in, Own Lattimore was a communist and a supporter of the USSR. Hell, the man dedicated one of his books to the communist party of the Soviet Union!

  • If only the above poster was correct. Sen. McCarthy DID unearth communists that were brought into the State Dept. primarily under the Truman Administration. Unfortunately, revisionist historians rewrite history and then posters like the one above read it, believe it and pass it on. Alger Hiss, & Whittaker Chambers along with the Rosenbergs are just a few of the communist spys that were "outted" during that time, look it up for yourself.

  • History seems to have concluded that nearly everybody who was dragged in to testify before McCarthy and the rest of House Committee On Un-American Activities did NOT sympathize with Communist doctrine, and couldn't care less about it. Many people lost their livelyhoods, or suffered defamation of character as a result. America did not benefit from this exercise, and politicians have not learned. U.S. "foreign policy" has helped create an America that is just as vulnerable to terrorism as ever.

  • No it hasn't. In fact, recent declassified material from the USA and Russia rather shows the problem of communist infiltration was underestimated if anything and McCarthy and HCUA were much maligned falsely for decades. McCarthy himself was nothing to do with the HCUA.

Some names of agents and communist sympathisers in State, the Treasury etc-

Hiss, Duran, Service, Vincent (State) Lattimore (advisor to State), Moss (Defense), White Adler (Treasury), Currie (Aid to FDR)...

    See "Venona"
