NOW this is what rap used to be about before all the materialism and genocide! This + many other original hard funky beats and raps is what RAISED me! It's in my soul, young folks today really have NO idea what it's really about! This is when neighborhoods all over every city in this country had various house+block parties at once! Hearing oldschool music like this REALLY brings a tear to my eye from the memories! PEACE to all the pioneers like: AfrikaBambaata,SugarHill,GrandMasterFlash, etc!
All most brings a tear to my eye in thoughts of those who have passed on but the music still lives on in our hearts that recall those days of cassettes and walking around with boom boxes that took 12-20 batteries!! Enjoy your time here on earth, your time is very limited....
Wow! Brings back memories from 1980 I was 18 working a summer job when this jam came out along with kurtis Blow "The Breaks" these were the greatest days.....
This really brings back memories. I stopped listening to Rap in the 80's from then on it was all downhill. But thanks for reminding me what rap was like and should be like
slick rick was one of the great ones ( BUT) this Rhyme is with out a dout is the no# 1 story ever told in rap.............. i have been a dj for over 30 years and to this date when i hear this track i go Dope ........ THanks.... Cool dj Hi Tech
now this is rap music what use to be and today what it should be a rap song with a great beat and a bad ass rhythm now to bad a lot rappers can take a lesson from this song there no four letter words, or disrepect of women.. a rap song you can dance to and rap to at the same time.. this was a genius at work....
@tulipp64 this was dropped in 1980, also the baseline mimics good times, which rappers delight samples. there is a vibraphone and a similiar rhythm guitar so i think it can be established that it is trying to copy the good times sound. but the lyrics, do they copy rappers delight??? Lets see: Louis Line, break of dawn, doing the freak. those are clearly from rappers delight
I remember jamming to this song in NYC. Clean lyrics with a great imagination. I use to visualize everything he said. What ever happen to rap songs like this?
summer 1979 springfield gardens queens, ny. my pops my bro and my sister on the stoop of the house. this is the first rap i had memorized and i do to this day.....hahaha. even the voices.
So much fun. I feel as though hip-hop is either too serious or too absurd. I miss this mixture of wit, humor, and pure creativity. We'll get it back one day.
Wow...I remember when this record came out and we played it over and over and over until we knew the lyrics...good times...thanks for the post...Jersey in the house...Peace
As you can see...at this point when this song came out, it was still consider as an offshoot of Disco...Hip Hop, the son of Disco...peace...
Wow...I remember when this record came out and we played it over and over and over until we knew the lyrics...good times...thanks for the post...Jersey in the house...Peace
the first story teller on wax he rocked this shit for 14 mins. a real og of rap back when we got no radio air play. one of the founding fathers of hip hop
Rap was only a year old when this came out. Back when you had to be able to control the mike to be successful!! Note that after he beqins to rap, there is less than 30 seconds of break through the entire 12 minutes of rhymes. And Jimmy Spicer was in the top five of the first ten years of Hip Hop. they actually mis spelled his name on the original all black label print as Jimmy Spleer and released tens of thousands of them and didn't fix the type-o until those sold out.
wow one of my first hip hop albums i ever possessed....this is hip hop at it's youngest stage on the airwaves ppl... one of my first albums in my soon to be (little did i know)enormous collection

The first disco I hit was 54
They didn't even want to let me in the door
I said, "Listen, my man, I am a real cool guy
I can turn into a bat, I can even fly"
He said, "Dracula, you can do all of that
Then come on in and catch a neat freak attack
