@puskascat well it suggests that it was one of the other three who told him to discredit westerby's story, if he was grateful at first but then reacted differently the next day. it's still odd that he knew about tinker, tailor though.

@somerandomer I think that by this stage Smiley has realised that Esterhase is being made to do the leg work, and thus be the visible face of Operation Witchcraft, by the mole (see Connie Sachs' story) - but he needs confirmation. The irony, as the next scenes show, is that even though he has joined the cabal, Esterhase still hasn't got the improved status he craves. He's a provider of technical services, deliberately cut off from recruitment - low grade as mole material.
