LOL... so true. In fat most of the time they don't even ask permission before joining in. One person starts playing a tin whistle and instantly 10 gobshites starting banging away, totally drowning him out.
There are some extremely bizarre ideas of Irish music expressed by some of the commenters here, but I haven't time to dissect and explain them all. Just some highlights: the bodhran is a folk drum formerly used mainly by the Wren Boy mummers in Wexford and elsewhere. It was imported into the dance genre about 45 years ago. Prior to that I never saw one used.
The great Irish piper Seamus Ennis was once asked what was the best way to play the bodhran. He replied, "With a jack-knife."
@andygr62 Yes they can! Here is Scotland it's called a "boh-rahn" but my american girlfriend tells me in america and ireland they call it a "bow-rawn"
It would likely ruin everyone else's enjoyment, especially those who've invested years and years into developing their skils and repertoire. Playing bodhran well takes skill and sensitivity which takes years to acquire.
@piobairesicago It took me two weeks. Then I got bored with it. It's a non-musicians instrument. Back to the snare (that I am still learning after 30 years) and the banjo.
@cpasouthoz the bodhrann is not a drum. What harm can it do? um he/she has no experince in playing said instrument and stuff like bodhrann, lute and other irish istruments take years of pratice. it would ruin a good reel. Real irish music is not much on lyrical bases as it is to acompany dancers whch is also why a bodhrann not a drum is used for it would mess up the dancer who defenitly can't sing oir such with all that druming.
What an elitist snob! ; ) All you melody players are so mean! ; ) I'm entitled to play my bodhran anywhere, any time people are playing Irish music, and including me is more important than anyone else's enjoyment! ; )
The unicorn song was recorded by the Irish Rovers back in the 70s-- the lyrics were written by the great Shel Silverstein. It has become a curse for many musicians who play in Irish pubs, because so many dimwits keep asking for it (so they can mimic the animals mentioned in the song)
Classic. There are people out there that do think that way. Hey I've got a bodhrán now I can 'play' along.
Actually wTF is the unicorn song? I've been playing fiddle since '63 and never heard of it. Am I missing something. Should I be depressed that a wanna-be bodhrán-basher knows about a tune that I've never heard of??
Ouch! Can't say I would ever want to sing the Unicorn song even if the entire room was doing the hand gestures... I can say though that after more than 2 decades of playing the bodhron, I am still learning etiquette. So many different levels of support that the groove section offers...I am happy to be able to share as needed.

"You will never again feel the horrible emptiness inside which made you purchase the bodhran in the first place"
Pure genius. We've all met someone like that, and it's fucking annoying when they try to play.

Absolutely brilliant that the focus of musical ridicule has been taken from banjo players. If only for an out of time heartbeat.

Thanks to Finvarra's Wren for putting me on to this.

Saying "go away" is a bit mean but it would be good to say "just listen and learn the tune before thwaping that drum"

But he already tried that approach @1:15, and she asked why he won't let her share her gift.

@majormana1 How does a bodhrann differ from a frame drum? It's a skin stretched over a hoop, so I don't know the difference.
Hikikomori013 9 months ago
@Hikikomori013: it's a frame drum, yes. Not sure why people think otherwise - ???

@StringdMigration It must be something like being asked to play "Devil went down to Georgia" at an old-time session. Every genre has one.
