The Spartan III's on Onyx were decimated by the Sentinels because of the shitty armor that Kurt had them wear. That's why he feels guilty every time one of his "children" died. So do some reading, Book 1: The Fall of Reach, and Book 4: The Ghosts of Onyx. Spartan III's weren't even created until after Master Chief's journey to Alpha Halo which is the second book.

I have to admit though, as amazing as it was --- it was lacking 1 thing: a little more intensity.
