I have two questions about this video. 1. why isn't a work harness being used for plowing, i saw that a buggy harness was being used 2. i saw the harrow that was in the video, and a team could pull a much larger spring tooth harrow than that, my quarter horse can pull a harrow that size.
Been doing it for many many years... I never amend only chicken manure, always with pine shavings as a binder. I have a youtube posted showing the results... this is regarding the use of chicken manure and not necessarily a chicken tractor. There are many ways to garden of course.. this is merely a method for me to recycle coop litter. I would agree that a thick layer of pure manure would be too "hot" for immediate planting. I've found the perfect balance here in my part of the country.
I personally see chicken tractors as only temporary housing which allows them to be out on fresh soil... I support the practice of also having permanent standing chicken coops. Chicken tractors also allow breeders to separate those they wish to breed pure lines of poultry... There are many ways to rear a chicken, these are merely options. Visit Garden Girl TV to see how chicken tractors are working with raised gardens in the cities. OR just keep saying it's "crap" up to you.
The background music sounds like bagpipes "breathing". It isn't the most enjoyable sound. If you reloaded this with better soundtrac you'd probably get more views. I have to turn off the sound just to finish the video.
Nice Job! I love what you are doing. I farm a small vineyard (and winery) with a team of Percheron-Morgan Crosses along the Central Coast of California. I'm always interested in trading notes with other organic horse-powered farmers! Check out my own clips (search under pipestone vineyards). Jeff
Excellent! There is a book titled: The Chicken Tractor (use chickens to prepare garden soil and remove weeds) Lots of organic methods discussed and soil science. For rearing the Chickens, there is a DVD titled Regarding Chickens "excellent". What about no-till gardening? I think using poultry eliminates the till need. There are of course, many opinions on working soil. Thanks for sharing and yes, the music detracts.
Congratulation on taking the plunge and going Organic, if only the whole world would! I understood what the term organic farming meant when I realized that it was how my grandparents farmed from 1900 onwards - biologically not chemically.
In 5 years I intend to be there at that point. Farming with horses and producing organically grown produce and meat with a peacefull existance, thats my idea of a good life. Great video!
