Hey Sully. I'm in the Houston area and planning my first build soon. Your videos have been extremely helpful, but I still have some questions in the design phase. I have a pretty good idea of what I want but I need someone to help me mesh it out and maybe help design some templates. I ordered most of the tools I need to get started as all of my old tools got jacked from my storage unit. Just waiting on them to come in. I would really appreciate some help on the design portion of the guitar
@yungmoon1 That's awesome! Actually, DJ Nelson (the guy who wrote and played it) just put out a new album with a full length version of the intro! I have a link to it on sullyguitars.us Check it out!
@Youreallysuckguy There are some similarities, as I like that design, but if you put them next to each other, they're pretty different. I think it's gonna be neat (not that the Ravelle isn't neat!)
@azfryguy Way too long! My goal is to get stuff done within 6-8 months. I'm workin on bringing that time down. Not being able to do this full time has some impact on the turnaround time.
Hey Sully, Im not sure if I agree that necks need to be definite dimensions. Nut width, neck width, etc... are (In my design experience) defined by the choices you make for the bridge spacing, scale length and overall design. I use a CAD program to make simple 2D plans and have them printed out professionally at a print shop in full size. Overall length has never worried me except for the fact you cant fit them in a standard hardcase! Opinions?
@Digideus We're pretty much talkin' about the same thing, to an extent. Width can be very fluid, for sure, but keep in mind that I'm using dimensions that are based off of Fender specs. So the fretted portion of a standard 22 fret neck with 1/4" fretboard overhang is going to be 17 5/8" (for 24 3/4") and 18 7/16" (for 25 1/2"). Of course, if I made necks with no overhang, the measurements would be different.
The reason why I'm considering length for this particular guitar is because some of the 3D drawings I have of it at times look very long; especially in comparison to a Strat or an LP. In some of the drawings, it just had a bit of a look that I wanted to spend more time on. This was mainly an exercise in putting my mind to rest. :)
@davey4557 I'm not as great about it as I should be (but I'm getting much better), but it's definitely a great idea to mask up anytime you're creating dust. Thanks for sharing that!
hey Sully, great stuff no matter if you feel the opposite. i see you have the LP from a previous episode. Still looking good, although I thought it belonged to someone else? just curious buddy, thanks as always for sharing!
@adidas331 Yeah, I read about that. Astros also going to the AL. Interesting. I should point out, though, that I have a SSI gene (South Side Irish) that prevents me from wishing the Cubs well, though. Go SOX! :)
@jsullysix indeed. it seems we have friendly mlb banter GOin from here on sully. it's all good though, hope to visit the windy City and partake in the UBerneS that makes up your fair burg. never the less, goodtimes. ps - put the "caps" together...;)
@jsullysix as a TX kid I didn't connect with the astros or rangers, there was magic in the cubs sully, magic! harry caray in all his drunken glory was unequalled. oh, and that was the team i could always catch on cable tv (aside from the braves). it's about fandom, never the less it's all good
Looks like a Ibanez Darkstone but with more of a les paul (which is exactly which is exactly why I don't like the darkstones ;) ) And ofc, cooler headstock ;)
I vote necktrough and carv out a bit on the back for more reach!
@JerryBeatFreak Oh wow, it is somewhat similar. I hadn't known of that guitar. The original drawings had the little point going the same was as the Darkstone, but I felt it looked best after I flipped it. Trust me when I say that the guitar will have plenty of access and contours on the back to facilitate that! This guitar design attempts to address the issues that I have with Les Pauls (mostly scale and ergonomics).

hmm... how much would it cost if I were to make set neck Les Paul guitar, but just the body i wanted it a little bit smaller than original size.
mp3sucker 3 months ago
@mp3sucker how much would I charge for that? I wouldn't build a Les Paul copy, but can refer you to some folks that do.

Looks kind of like , similar to the Minarik guitars from some years back. The body shape helped in Kind of EQing the tone.
None the less , It will still be Cool.
Good Times.

Once I get done buying parts, YOU should see the end result of the Bass I am concocting!
Wood looks GREAT! Butt, it's a neck through made outa Plywood! (they said it sh/couldn't be done!) Highly "multi-laminated" to say the least!

@jsullysix I noticed the backside of the guitar body is quite long. Is that whats causing the length concerns?
Digideus 3 months ago
@Digideus It was initially. It's more pronounced at the 25.5" scale - the comparison to an LP is about an inch for that little stinger at the end.

MDF
Make sure you have full mask protection if you make MDF dust.
This shit causes Cancer big time.
It releases formaldehyde when cut or machined, which is a known carcinogen
All the older carpenters in my union are getting sick after working with that shit over the years.
Some industries only allow cutting of MDF in a special containment room :)
Cheers !!!

The product has not been around that long.
That's why we are just seeing the effects now.
The first guys that started using it are the ones getting sick.
Be Safe
Get a good respirator type mask that takes cartridge filters made by 3M
