  • Wasn't keen to start with, but as it goes on it warms on you..

  • is there anywhere to get this legally?

  • I'm seeing queens of the stone age tonight in kansas city! they are playing the whole first album and b sides.

  • Gomez (the band) does a killer cover of the Tom Waits original on their live double CD "Out West."

  • lol looks like the germs logo

  • The Tom Waits is definitely better than this, especially after seeing Fight Club, but this one is good to... I give it a 7 out of 10

  • This isn't bad at all, coming from a guy who play Waits until the needle's worn down. I'd rather have Queens cover Tom than, say....Motley Crue or something.

  • @bloodandwhiskey5 I really hate to mention this, but the Bulletboys did a cover of Hang on St. Christopher :(

  • the vocals are fuckin great.....!

first i didn't know it was a cover, and i was surprised by the the vocals, of Josh.

so mannish, and rock n roll!

    the man is a god.

  • DUDE THIS SUCKS!!!!! I love queens but stupid as hell to try to cover Tom Waits, unless of corse you gargle gravel and chew broken glass as a profession....This sucks really bad and does Tom Waits a great disservice.

  • I just quit my job and I am driving hundreds of miles to New Mexico from the east coast. I like this song.

  • OH HEY GUYS, I'm a huge Tom Waits fan, never really got into Queens of the Stone Age, and thought this track was good.

Musical snobbery is the biggest cancer killing music today. There really shouldn't be any boundaries to what someone can and can't cover, as long as they put spirit into it - which QotSA clearly have.

  • @JacobMorrisNinetyTwo Music Snobbery is doing music as much good as bad. You can't say that having people take their music SUPER SERIOUS is somehow bad for the industry.

But I agree that snobbery is harmful to the snob. They will never even give great bands a chance if they have already decided it's not 'good' or 'trendy'.

  • Honestly, I like this cover better than the original because I didn't get used to Waits' voice (I recognize its an interesting voice, but I don't like it; just a matter of taste).

But I'm sure that some Waits' fan could think the same about Homme's voice, so it's a draw.

  • @ruibarbosta

not nice enough for you eh you fucking idiot

  • It's a good cover. It's not supposed to sound exactly like Tom Waits. It's supposed to sound like QOTSA playing a Tom Waits song, which sounds pretty good to me. If they tried some of his slower, ballady stuff it wouldn't work, but for this song it does.

  • Couldn't have said it better Blargento.

It's just a means of showing respect and I think they did an awesome job.

  • Oh no, I had no idea QOTSA had raped this wonderful song.

Widespread Panic does a much better version.

  • @blackesteyes13 Go fuck yourself.

  • Oh wow, I love this band, I love this song, I never knew this existed, it's like christmas for me right now

  • It was right in everyones face. Tyler and I just made it visible. It was on the tip of everyones tongue. Tyler and I just gave it a name

    Fight Clube RULES!

  • @fuckerman157

    rule 1 and 2 !!

  • i really like QotSA but yeah Mark definitely would've fit it better. good cover choice though.

  • I like QotSA

    I like Gov't Mule

    I like Tom Waits

  • Shoulda had Mark Lanegan on the vocals.

  • this.

i didnt think of that but you are exactly right sir

  • I love Tom Waits. I don't listen do Queens of the Stone Age but I must say that this cover is pretty good.

And it's not about how the cover is terrible, a cover is pretty much a band honouring a song by another artist, and they did a damn fine job.

  • This song, of all the Tom Waits songs I've heard so far, probably lends itself to QotSA's style the best.

I love both artists, so discovering this was a pleastant surprise :)

  • Gov't Mule does this better than it's ever been done

  • you're incredibly right!!!!!!!

  • I agree, this is a good one. But, the Mule kicks everyones ass! They do everyones songs better than the bands who did them originally!

  • this is a great cover. comparing covers to the real thing shouldn't be about how good one sounds to the other, it's about changing it to sound like what the band wants it to be, that's basically what covers are about.

Goin' Out West is pretty much a kickass song already, so QOTSA covering it must of realized:

"There is nothing we can do to make this song more awesome, other than play it ourselves."

  • This is my favorite tom waits song ever! I don't need make up I have real scars

  • It's good. It doesn't add to it really but it's a thumbs up to Tom which is no bad thing.

  • tom sounds bettah if ya ask me

  • i must say the origional is better though this 1 kicks ass

  • I adore mister Waits and this song, but give him his credit Josh hasn't ruined the song although he hasn't done anything for it either...

  • I've said it many time before and I'll say it again unless your last name is Ramone DO NOT cover Mr Waits it will NEVER be as good but to be fair this is not as bad as Rod Stewarts cover of Waltzing Matilda

  • NO.

  • The Ramones cover of I don't Wanna Grow up SUCKED

  • The sex just DROOLS off of every word. Josh is the freaking coolest son of a bitch in the entire fucking world.

  • You know what you're talking about

  • i like this one better... it sounds a lot clearer and has more to it. the guitar parts that really define it are more prominent.

  • I think that for our talent contest at my highschool next year, I'm gonna try and sing this song. and rip off my shirt when I say "I look good without a shirt on." :)

  • do it. that'd be sick, sick sick

  • Am I alone in saying that I think this version kicks ass? It lacks that raw and heavy sound of the original, but I love Josh's slick tone and the swagger in his voice. Sounds completely different, but it'd be pretty boring to make a cover sound so much like the original.

  • This isn't really an effective cover. It sounds too much like the original, not enough of their own twist. And it doesn't come out well because Tom Waits' vocals are what make most of his songs.

  • exactly. well said.

i dont think anyone can really top Mr. Waits

  • this fuckin kills....I can't wait for a new qotsa album....eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

  • I like both versions. I am a HUGE Tom Waits fan, not too familiar with QOTSA, but I really dig this.

  • Tom Waits had it right the first time around... I love Queens but they didn't pull this one off.

  • im going to have to kindly disagree with you, i listened to both the orignal and the cover and i think they did a great job

  • Its a more slick version, and feels slightly quicker

  • I have to agree with booobbobo

Love both bands, but the vocals and drums lack the rawness of the original

  • fantastic

  • hey? i just understand maybe i don't understand well.

for be scused, i'm french :p

  • lol ton englais est un peu bonne.

  • merci :)

you may need some french lessons :p

the main thing is to be understood ehhe

  • lol oui je suis Americain

  • hey 71savages you said sthg wrong it's not from lanegan but from TOM WAITS.....

[i created an adress here just for informs you all :p]

  • who originally wrote this song? because its awesome.

  • This is great, awesome cover of an awesome song, I prefer the original but this is the best cover I've heard. Shame Mark left, it would be great to hear his voice on this song but that said, Josh did an awesome job.

    Hated the Dissociative version though..

  • It's probably already been said, but I think Mark Lanigan should have been the one to sing this.

  • Mark left Qotsa in 06

  • this song gets a picture of josh homme with a cigarette and a whiskey in a bar into my head!

  • wihtout a shirt on?

  • thank you blargento!

  • Fuckin' A. I love this. Queens and/or Tom Waits forever.

  • I don't understand what most people's problem with this is. Yes, of course it isn't as good as the Tom Waits original, I don't see how that's unexpected. It's a fucking cover, anyone who thinks it should outdo the original is probably another one of those twats who thinks the movies are better than books. Still, a good effort by QOTSA, and I think it does the original full justice.

  • Exactly.

  • SWEET JESUS ITS JACK!!!!!

  • @blargento I agree....It's a rare occasion when a cover is better than the original....QOTSA did a great job here

  • @blargento i agree. it takes some balls to cover Waits, these guys did it and didnt do half bad.

  • @blargento yeah, they just wanted to do a tribute to a artist they all love. a cover is a cover, I'm a hardcore tom waits fan, and I still think this cover kicks ass! it's real raw.

  • @blargento you're absolutely right. joshua homme is the only 'modern rocker' with enough balls of steel to make justice to a tom waits song. imagine if papa roach or some other pussy band (sorry for the slight offensive) made a cover of 'Chocolate Jesus' horrid, but this deserves no complaints, it's a great cover. and the message fits homme's mouth perfectly too, I've heard the tom waits/billy idol mutant child influence on qotsa's albums, he's probably a fanboy ;>

  • @blargento yeah! It's a tribute, not a REVAMP, or anything like that.

  • kool

  • i know theres a lot of mixed reviews of this one, but i think it's alright, first heard it on the vinyl B side of sick sick sick, its a bit of something extra and its not like theyre trying to fill album space as era vulgaris rocks pretty damn hard as it is, very enjoyable

  • i love QOTSA to death, but this sucks compared to Tom Waits version. Its not them, its just, he's untouchable.

  • Absolutely!

  • I like both cover and orig

  • tom waits forever

  • I think it's a good song. Homme is all about this style of music and the whole idea. It's a cover, so you can't expect him to sound like Waits. Plus, this was a B-side, so it isn't like he was filling space. Verdict: Takes Tom Waits' great idea and turns it into something you can listen to a bunch without feeling awkward. C'mon,--Tom Waits is pretty fucked up. I reserve the Tom Waits original for times when I'm feeling REAL seedy.

  • Hahaha!! Well said!

  • this is like a sad replica of the original. Tom Waits has been covered a lot, but at least other people made the songs their own. I feel like they made this to fill up album space. I can't say whether this is good or bad...its just sad.

  • eh...

  • Queens of the Stone Age really? Lame, sorry but it is. Tom Waits. listen to the original...its better don't waste your time.

  • im with this guy, Queens make some good stuff but it really isnt here.

  • this cover is so bad if you no the original...

  • I have to agree, even if' I'm a fan of both TW and QOTSA... all I can say is WTF??????

  • its a sick fuckin cover, absolut class! i dont even like qotsa that much! where is this from? is it a b side?

  • Musically it's a good cover. Would have been better with Mark Lanegan on vocal though.

  • chinaboatman, you're totally right. Josh's vocals don't suit this track. They're not aggressive enough, and certainly not shredded!

  • @Chinaboatman nope

  • @Chinaboatman Amen to that.. I dont mind there version of waits. But i wish they would have never done it. Nobody should cover Tom Waits imho

  • Its a grower.

  • screw all of you. queens kick ass. and this cover rocks. i LOVE the fuckin volume. rock on queens.

  • absolutly fuckin terrible. leave it alone you cocksuckers.

  • agreed - u rock

  • It's not bad but i think they should have kept the hard industrial percussion of the original and maybe done something else with the vocals? maybe abit of distortion would have worked pretty well on them :P

Still not a bad cover QOTSA are a good band

  • it's not bad, would have been better if Hommes would've sang in his conventional voice, rather than attempting to imitate the hoarse voice of Waits.

  • you,re a fucking retard who only likes the "old stuff" from band,s just for the sake of it you my friend are a vajanus

  • this is one of the worst covers of all time...screw these guys

  • take it easy man, it's a good effort. QOTSA are one of best bands around.

  • The Dissociatives did a wayyyyy better job!

    agree

  • This band is pretty good, but there's no way this is comparable to the original

  • the band is fuckin amazing!

but its definatly no scratch on the origional

  • This isn't as good as the original, it kinda sucks, it only sounds good with that gravely voice that Waits has.

  • I concur. That's the beauty of the song. They just don't capture it. Don't think anyone could.

  • I doubt Waits considers himself a sacred cow. Good bands doing good covers of your music and putting them on their albums is a massive compliment to the original artist.

They changed the word "speed" to "seed" though, pretty lame.

  • If someone told me that I had to pick which version of Goin' Out West that I liked the best I would have to toss a coin.....that is how much I love both the original (Tom Waits) and the remake (Queens of the Stone Age)

  • For all those claiming that Waits can't be covered - ever any of you heard Lucinda William's version of "Hang Down Your Head"? Los Lobos take on "Jockey Full Of Bourbon"? Steve Earle doing "Way Down In The Hole"? Or John Hammond's "Wicked Grin" album?

You should check 'em out - By the way, I ain't raggin' on anybody here.

  • Oh fuck this shit, QOTSA can STFU

  • not bad. this shoulda been on the expanded edition of era vulgaris for canada. MUCH better cover than there waste of minutes on a disk that thier version of what White Wedding was

  • totally agree about white wedding and i love these guys more than life.

  • I love this version of the song, but Waits' version is miles ahead of QOTSA's. Wish I could still play the song on guitar :/.

  • Tom waits shouldn't be covered

  • Look on the bright side--at least this isn't Rod Stewart.

  • lol, I hadn't thought of that

  • Yeah, Most Rod Stewart fans have no idea that Tom wrote Downtown Train cos Rod butchered it so bad. That cover used to piss me off until I saw that Rod also covered Tom Traubert's Blues. That cover was nothing less than an abortion set to music.

After seeing that, this is a very non-threatening cover.

  • I'd agree with you entirely but honestly, I have a soft spot for the Ramones cover of I Don't Wanna Grow Up.

... But other than that, yes.

  • I think that's a good exception

  • Tom Waits has been one of the most covered musical artists in recent history.

  • This is fucking bullshit.

    Everything about this disgusting.

  • i use to like QOTSA,

but they just copy the stooges primarily

and this is a horribly cover

  • ugh. Love QOTSA, but they should have just tried to play this in their own style rather than trying to copy Waits.

  • The visual that comes to my mind: a very young boy walking around in his father's oversized shoes; it's so cute and always brings a smile to the face.

Years of experience cannot be replicated.

  • One of the only bands cool enough to even try!

  • You know what.

    Screw you... I liked it.

Nobody can be expected to mimic Waits... Those who do usually fail.

QOTSA took the song and did it in their own style, and I appreciate the effort and Enjoyed the result.

Besides... Why try to do a cover and play it in the exact same style as the original? Whats the point of that? If you liked the original, just listen TO the original...

  • The problem for me was that they did try to mimic them too much. The drums, organization, everything was too similiar.

  • Hmm, you might actually have a point there... But still, Each to his own I guess.

    People got different tastes =)

  • Mmno. Fuck that.

  • Even tho I usually like Queens of the Stone Age this cover pretty much sucks...

  • They should have Mark Lanegan sing this song instead of Josh.

  • Eeeeeeeew, it's so not the same without Tom's raw, wierd, ugly, unapologetic voice.

Josh's voice is too American Idol for something like this.

  • BBBBBBBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

this is officialy the songs obituary!!!

  • Bastards just murdered that song

  • eh, they could have done a little bit more with this song, i think. no one can sound like tom waits, so i think they should have added a little more of what they do usually to it like they did towards the end. its still fairly decent though, but nothing beats tom waits.

  • love qotsa and i love tom waits. it's good to actually hear a good cover of a wait's song.

  • At least they're playing the right notes.

  • Bah, You can't sing like Tom Waits unless your voice was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months and then taken outside and run over with a car.

    Tom Waits can't be covered.

  • Tell Scarlet Johansson that! I can't believe she's releasing an album of Tom Waits covers...

  • The hard guitar, "dingy" bass and barrel drums make the original song awesome.

This lacks those, and for that I rate this song with two stars.

  • has nick cave ever covered this song ?

  • No.

  • i hate it !!!

  • I love Tom Waits version. But this version kicks just as much ass. Its a bit more accessible to the mainstream crowd. Well as accessible as qotsa can be to the mainstream. Great song, great cover.

  • it`s cool. but TOM WAITS original is better. i love qotsa. but tom waits can`t be covered.

  • You do realize that Tom Waits is one of the most commonly covered artists in the industry?

Anyway, this is good but, like everyone says, Tom's was just sublime.

  • jajaja. whatever. kiss my sweet girlie-butt

  • this isn't bad at all, but it would have been cooler if Nick was still in the band, he could have ripped into this good. to whomever mention a collaboration being Waits and QOTSA, that'd be awesome.

  • covers are tributes, most ppl cover songs cause they like them. Id say qotsa just wants thier fans, that havnt yet, to check out these songs on the limited edish for germany

  • how come mark is not singing in this one?!

  • it is as good as tom's take, just qotsa's version....enjoy the fact you can listen to some music, or go out west...peace!

  • Everybody's rather harsh on this track. It's just a straightforward cover. I'm a huge Tom Waits fan and yes this isn't as good as his version, but I'd rather them just take it as it is than try to fuck it up. This version sounds the closest to Waits, and I credit them for doing a song of his. In fact, they ought to collaborate.

  • Jesus, F'ing christ, im a good QOTSA fan and all, but this doesnt come anywhere NEAR the original, nothing does or ever will when it comes to tom's merch....

    Comparativly, this is awful.

  • pure excellence

  • This version has no fuckin' balls. Leave the magic too Tom.

  • It's sort of lost it's charm.

  • Pretty awesome cover, but yeah, Mark on vocals would've been perfect.

  • GOOD COVER

  • I can't believe Tom let you do this to his song...

  • This would've sounded a lot better with Mark Lanegan on vocals.

  • poor..tom waits im sorry for them..kids these days

  • Thats a poor cover. Its a pity. I was quite excited when I heard about it.

  • listen to the dissociatives version here on youtube. The singer is Daniel Johns from Silverchair. It's definetly worth watching.

  • after hearing the dissociatives do a version of goin out west, I can't believe that QOTSA would even hit record for this piece of crap. They don't even try on this.
