I can relate a bit i saw this on a tv add in 2012 hosted by two guys from "The Band" im the same age as you, maybe we saw the same add? lol its kinda funny. Anywase now i can add the songs i listened to in seattle when i was a kid. =)
Jim Croce was a genius. The proof is that his work stands the test of time. I liked it 40 years ago, enjoy it today, and folks 40 years from now will also dig it. Great art doesn't fade.
Im only 18 and recently came across Jim Croce by the song "Operator" it made me cry because there's this girl that I know I'll never have and then I listened to " You Don't Mess Around With Jim " and now I feel like getting into a bar room brawl. Good songwriters and musicians will never be forgotten because songs like these will never go out of style and will always make you feel something inside.
I wouldn't mess with him for all the time I could put in a bottle, ain't gonna tug on his cape either;or try to pull off his mask. May God keep him. True Great
Thanks to the person who pointed out who the "dope' was next to Jim. Maury was a great musician and complimented Jims' songs so well. Perhaps Maury would have become a star in his own right had he not died so young with Jim. They were a great team.
Loved Jim Croce, his music never gets old. Sad that he and Maury died so young. They were quite a team. his death was "the day the music died" to me. i was a teenager when he rashed and was very sad for a long time. What a great talent and seemed like a genuinely nice and decent man. RIP Jim and Maury.
@MrRobertDallasJames That "Dope" sitting next to Jim isnt quite a dope. His name is Maury Muehleisen , Croce was originally the lead guitarist for Muehleisen , But later the roles reversed. They met in 1970, and every song Jim sang, he backed up. They both died in the plane crash in 1973, this was indeed unfortunate. But they left behind quite a legacy, that to this day, and for the rest of eternity, will never die.
Now this man is real. His friend to his right is real. This song is about someone real. So real in fact that Willie "Slim" McCoy sang back ground vocals on "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown". No shit! Upper Darby still misses the hell out of you guys.
You want sad? Read the FAA report on how he probably died? Pilot had a heart attack on takeoff ... Great singer, songwriter... wife has very cool rest. in San Diego.
@Roamingdoc Well in that case, I hope the end came quickly! The idea of falling for thousands of feet KNOWING you're going to die is something that doesn't bare thinking about..........
Thankyou so very much for posting. Have loved Jim's music all my life.. after hearing it constantly from my Mom as a small child in the 70's. He was Her favorite singer as well. All these songs bring back amazing memories.. thanks..
@sakaker2000 well, in the early 70s this was definitely not considered Country. If it came out today, sure, but Jim was in that genre of roots influenced singer/songwriters blossoming during that time. BTW, only one of Jim's songs charted on the C/W charts - "I'll have to say I love you in a song."
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that Jim Croce appears to be one of the most underrated, forgotten singers from The 70's. That's disrespectful to me. What do y'all think?
@kja427 most definately his songwriting is some of the best around...and you can't forget his amazing accompanist...damn those small airplanes and pecan trees :-( :-(
@kja427 Man I've heard all his songs but for some reason I didn't know that they were all his songs. Maybe that's the reason. I've yet to hear a song he's made that sucked. It's really disrespectful. The man is awesome. I only imagine what he could have done had he not died so early. Jim Croce is now in my top 5 singers.
@kja427 you are so right im only 13 but my parents listened to this stuff (beach boys, beatles, elton John, billy joel etc.) when i was young so jim croce is one of my top 3 favorite artists to have ever graced this earth
@kja427 Not in my house. When I was a kid, my aunt would put the speakers in the winders of the house and my whole family would drink beer out in the Southern heat and spin Croce records. My mama was crazy about Croce and I have all his stuff.
@kja427 ---- I agree with you,he is sadly missed. People like Jim cared for their fans and wrote their songs for us as well as themselves. This country has gotten really covetous and selfish these past 40 years almost since he died. The music brings back so much to me. It's a portrait of my troubled teen years.
"Bad Bad Leroy Brown," "You Don't Mess Around With Jim," I've Got a Name," "Time in a Bottle," "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song" so many great songs from this gifted songwriter.
James Croce b. 10 Jan '43, Philadelphia, PA Jim and his musical partner Maury Muehleisen and others boarded a private airplane in Natchitoches, LA to travel to a gig in Texas when the plane crashed shortly after takeoff killing everyone on board.
