In the first time I had been to Usa,I noticed that people are generally driving Automatic transmissions...Like %85 percent of the cars are Automated !.But except that the biggest difference I have ever seen was these automatic drivers were always dealing with anything else,drinking their cofee,texting,eating,anything else than just concentrating on the road.Manual transmission is the best way to transmit the power of engine without any loose...

And about Semi Manuals,they have automated clutch but the clutch is terrible and they are likely to make a lot of problems and are not comfortable as real automatic transmissions,but more efficient on fuel and faster...In manual transmission,it requires a lot of practice in rush hours,clutch and gas,learning is harder but it is the real way of driving a car...Keeps you awared and attracted to road,having the all control

I have driven nearly all kinds of transmitted cars,Automatics,Manuals,Semi Automatics with manually shifting option,Semi Manuals which work like Manuals but has no clutch or H pattern...Automatics are confortable,in Japanese cars they are durable if you behave it well,Semi Automatics have the same characteristics but you shouldnt behave it like a manual,wiating till it shifts at 7000 rpm,trying to double shift down..

Stick Shift [my female boss drives one, LITERALLY], anbd especially for a bus or truck [I was born in Decemebr 1960, and even transit buses were four speed manuak. Did you know that the reverse was switch operated. Look up Double Cluthcing, dirving Mack Truck, etc. for larger older manaul vehicles.]

BTW most automatics if not ALL suck.

Stick = driving. Auto = BORING!! I drive upwards of 600 miles a week at times. A lot of that across town driving (albeit not the same town.) NEVER get tired of the stick!! Auto or stick is definitely a personal decision, just if you're piloting your automatic, kindly stay out of the way.

I agree with street', automatics are great for drag racing, they have faster shifts(for drag racing street cars).

But most racing relies on the standard transmission. Whether it be a BMW SMG trans in a M6, or a Doug Nash 4+1 OD in a Camaro, they still reign supreme.

Real Sports Car = Manual

Real Expensive Sports Car = F1 wannabe paddle shifters with a manual gearbox.

Daily = Lazy comfort? Auto. Fun? Manual

There is inherent loss with the torque converter, but some cars like the new Z4 rate the same or slightly better mileage on the auto. Maybe most manual boxes just aren't getting the same level of gains from parasitic loss optimization. Repairs are definitely easier on a manual though.

Obviously from teh answers, most Americans haven't a clue how to drive stick shift (manual). As said by nathaniel23, you use less petrol, and if driven correctly, a clutch can easily last 150 000 to 200 000 miles. Replacing a clutch is extremely cheap when comparing it to an auto-box overhaul!

In a car an automatic is superior, but in a vehical that needs more tourque like a truck,the way it's done is rev up the motor and have it in a lower gear and not shift at an "unhandy time"the manual is the way to go to "micro-manage"your gears whether it's mechanical gears or hydrostatic gears.
