  • Meanwhile in Africa...

  • Bought my non-L 100mm Macro a year to the day of this video upload. Weird!

  • make a prime lens test for dslr filming, for l lens and non l lens

  • ALLLAMINYUMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thumbs up for Kai's "aaawwww shhhiiiit..."

  • ala what???

  • more L vs non-L !!!!

  • XLNT... made my decision...L it is

  • Yes please

  • BokkehH!

  • BOOOKKKEH

  • I have the Canon 100mm f1.8 without the IS and L designations. I love the lens and feel that I don't need the IS and L features at all, since the lens is generally used either indoors or in good weather, making the extra weatherproofing unnecessary. Also, I shoot a lot of macro shots for small items that I sell on eBay and I have no problem holding the lens still, which makes the IS feature unnecessary also. Yea, it might be nice, but I can spend the savings on another cool lens.

  • I agree! You need to do a comparison of these two lens for portrait/head shot use. Many photographers are using the macro lenses for this purpose. It would have been a great feature in the video.

  • oh shit, i thought my computer was a 5D with a weatherproof lens and i trew it into the swimmingpool!

  • an asian with a english accent on an american website

  • U MAD?

  • i too have bought the L lens and very pleased with the results

    regards

    allan UK

  • thanks, you made my decision easy.

  • Nice review ! However, i just found a very good question in comments : how about portrait ? Well at first i got the non-L version and just upgraded recently. Both are just awesome for portrait and like he said in the video, differences are subtle. But once you got your hands on the L one, it just feels great ! Also, IS is very handy when you don't want to carry any flash. One thing i could not afford with the non-L version. You got the money : pick the L ! Else, try the other anyway cause it's

  • That was awesome review. Is this a good lens for portrait photos?

  • Best video reviewer ever: Kai. Best segment: L vs. Non L!!!

  • This video went viral on Tuvalu

  • Have this camera and this lens - good to know I can rely on the weatherproofing (grin) and that the lens was worth the extra $ to ME as macro is my forte. Love to see more lens comparisons that balance the details of differences so I can decide which ones to spend the $ on and which ones are not details I need to buy up.

  • funniest lens review i ve ever seen, you make 10 minutes pass in seconds.

  • how is this lens on portraits?

  • love seeing an asian guy with an english accent :)

  • More L Vs non L Battles !

    You guys rocks !

  • Hey guys i have a prob:

Im 14 years old and im a proud owner of a 50d but just with a 50mm f1.8

Does smby have an idea how i can get good cheap lenses (dont say ebay)

    thank u ...

  • @Mo3run make some money and get a good quality lens. Lenses are expensive my man.

  • @Mo3run amazon ,sigma

  • i knew the 3:42 was going to happen when the camera guy went further and i saw the lens getting wet hahaha

  • "ment" for testing haha

  • i;m letting u know :)

  • getting 100mm 2,8 L for chrismas :)

  • @byKorbi nice one!! :D

  • Do you have a video comparing the D.O. Lens vs L series lens... thats how I got here in the First place...

  • Thanks for sharing this video. would like to see more L vs non-L comparison.

  • Thanks for this video! Very well done. Helped my purchase!

  • Gahh.. As much as this vid shows alot of comparisons, i still cant decide whether to get the L or not. I do handheld photog 95% of the time, but im not sure if the IS really makes THAT much of a diff to justify the extra cost. Anyone able to help out on this?

  • @BartholomewYeo Hi, in answer to your question, if your are doing handheld IS is definitely worth it, especially as when shooting macro you loose an extra stop of light, requiring lower shutter speeds. The L lens is also fabulously well made from engineering plastic (which is far better quality than normal plastic). So yeah if you can afford it, go for the L version

  • @jledarby Hi there! I see, nice! That's just what i needed to know, that the IS is really worth the extra cost of 30% (at my country). Much appreciated. Thanks! ;)

  • @BartholomewYeo I have the some problem. I really want the L lens but can't justify the extra cost. The main feature I would be paying for is build quality. IS & rounded 9-blade diaphragm are a plus. The L also look a lot nicer. At almost double the price, this is a very hard decision to make.

  • @m505xl Haha i wouldn't pay so much more just for the build and looks.. Unless you're gonna be frequently exposing this lens to harsh environments. For me, I'm in for the IS and slightly better bokeh balls ;D

  • Great video! But could the non L lens fit on a canon rebel xs?? Plz reply thanks

  • @mervie17 of course it could, the FOVCF doesnt make any dfference. its only when you mount an EF-S on a full frame (like the 5DmkII) you get some problems

  • more l vs non l

  • Do some more!

  • Great review... thank you! I've had a couple of fashion shoots in light rain and like to have IS at low shutter speed sunset shots... so that's the price difference I have to consider: weather sealing and IS. =)

  • I bought a packet of red rubber bands and put them on my lenses. Now all my lenses are L lenses!

  • @jamiewindsor yea sure ''Canon 18-55 F3.5 L series''

  • @jamiewindsor EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @jamiewindsor While I used a red tape for less obvious.

  • more l vs non l !!! i was lucky cause i want to buy the 100mm but i will go for the non l ! difference is to small for me !! then i spend some mony for a replacement for my 18-55 kit lens !

  • poor girl trying to catch up with mom at 5:00

  • Thank you for this video. Thumbs Up! ;)

  • GASPED when you poured the water... but I guess its easy when it aint your dime... :)

  • I must go L on putting an L lens out there in motorsport the comparison was so much better test was 70-200 f4 is l lens it was pin sharp and ate the 55-200 for breakfast. Its 10x the price almost too but worth it!

  • Oh Man that’s hard to see..water being poured over a Canon SLR

  • Wait, so my camera body can get wet?

  • @seektheskittle

Only if it's weather sealed mate. The 5D Mark II is. Something like the 550D cannot get wet.

  • @Disinf3ctant Oh, so my XS can't get wet. Right?

  • @seektheskittle

No.. I wouldn't wet it. Maybe I'm just a careless person but I do allow myself to take photos in light drizzle with my 600D. If there's not enough to start running down my camera bu stays in little water droplets on the surface then I deem it safe. You can choose to do this or not at your own discretion =)

Don't pour water on it though, it will die haha.

  • L = slightly, but noticeably sharper maybe... but more than noticeably more expensive!...the L series has enjoyed a more than deserved position as the best money can buy...in all reality they're the best if u have money to WASTE!....For the small improvements its not worth the HUGE price increase........the Bokeh is an over rated feature..who really cares if the balls are not 100% spherical?...i doubt most people would even bother...and would be too much interested in the IN FOCUS subject!..

  • like it, have some more. Is there any test between IS lens and non IS lens?

  • My 50mm 1.8 just broke. I can't decide between the canon 28mm 1.8, the sigma 30mm, or the canon 50mm 1.4.. I am looking for a new prime lens and around 400 bucks. Any ideas? Ill be shooting with a Canon 60D. I need some advice

  • @aassggkk Are you using it for street photography, portrait, or filming? I like the Sigma for its smooth bokeh and focal length (close to 50mm on FF). Perfect for street photography and casual shooting. The 50mm f1.4 has great bokeh but is more a portrait lens, and you won't get many indoor group shots due to long focal length

  • What do you think about Fujifilm Hs20 exr?

  • Comment removed

  • Do more!

  • L = slightly, but noticeably sharper

  • 8:55 "OK Bad" LOL!!!

  • "Mere mortal bank balances"

    Priceless

  • I'ld like to see how Zeiss Distagon lenses stack upto the Canon L lenses...

  • This Guy is a littly crazy

  • 'L of a talking, thumbs up!

  • can you do one on ultrawide lenses? like the canon 16-35mm f/2.8, tokina 11-16mm f.2.8, and the sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 or f/4-5.6

  • More L vs Non Ls please, great review!

  • Yes! Please! More L vs Non-L! I'd really like to see 50/1.4 vs 50/1.2L also 200/2.8L and 200/2.0L comparison!! PLEASE Kai!!!!

  • lots of dust on the lenses 0:59

  • More L vs non L. Also. Sigma vs canon

  • More L vs Non L!!!

  • What was the video itself shot with? 5D? great work on that props to your camera guy

  • Subscribed. I bought the L version based on impulse, glad to see that it was at least on someone's opinion worth something. Although, with my level of skill and expertise and actual requirements for this kind of photography, it was a bit of a waste.

  • i dig the way he says aluminum.

  • @GizmoBitz He says aluminium (UK), not aluminum (US).

  • If cameras were alive they'd hate kai

  • The best macro youe can ever buy.

  • sigma 150mm

  • I love the cheaper vs. more expensive version of similar lenses, keep them coming!

  • things get a "wee" bit awkward at 3:05 ^o^ whaaahahahaha!

  • spare the 5D at least. un mount it, THEN weather test it :)

  • more l vs non-l please

  • I would like to see some more battles and reviews of "budget friendly" lenses. Lenses that are under say $700 or $600.

  • I too like the wed wing.

  • I wana Nikon lens videos

  • We need more man!

  • More L vs non L please!

  • please have video of nikon kit lens and canon kit lens. like 18-55mm.

  • I would buy the non-L version, but it is so fucking ugly! now i have to save a lil bit more money für the 100mm L... damn :D

  • What about a versus between Canon 100mm L macro and Sigma 105mm macro ?

  • what about old carl zeiss vs new carl zeiss lenses on a canon or nikon body? i've never seen a comparison like that:)

  • had the non-L lens before, then switched it to L-version. Both are excellent choices, but all I can say, is that I love the L!

  • More L vs non-L with water test, please.

  • great video - thanks alot!!!

  • I would like to see a battle of the 85's. f/1.8 vs f/1.2L

  • Keep em coming!

    I've learned a lot from your video's.

I bought the 7D instead of the 5D Mark II (not only because of you but the video helped me a lot)

  • This review helped me make my final decision to get the "non-L" lens for macro shots. :)

  • Love your videos!!

  • love this review..

i should have this lens one day

  • brilliant vidoe as usual, i really like this guy, entertainment with reviews is good.

  • this dude is simply good! hahaha who wants to drop some water on brand new 5d mark ii as well! :D

  • Good casual, entertaining review. Much appreciated will be checking more of these.

  • Excellent video!

  • i wanna see the difference in picture quality

  • I wanna see more more and many more L vs non-L battles

  • more l vs. non l videos please

  • great video, thanks ... from nyc

  • Would be very cool to see some Canon non L vs. L comparison on the Canon EF 35mm's :) ! Wouldn't ?

  • Love to see more L vs. Non-L. Also maybe more third party lenses vs. non-third party lenses. Such as canon 50mm f1.4 vs. Sigma 50mm f1.4. Love that episode.

  • Nice videos kai. :)

I would love to see some more L VS Non L. Maybe, Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II VS Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L. I know they are not in the same league but they atleast have the same size.

Looking forward for more epic videos in the future.

  • 3:33 sounded like you were trying to do an Aussie impression.

  • more pls!

  • I would die getting one of these lenses...

  • this was hardly a good comparison. for starters the 100mm non l was replaced by the l series. secondly the HIS is not included in all l series lenses. thirdly a lot of l lenses have metal bodies like my 180mm macro. you need to find two canon lenses of same or similar applications and focal length where the l series does not superceed the other. in some cases with l lenses you will get amazingly good quality but not in all.

  • "it really does put up an 'L' of a good fight."

  • is that microphone connected wirelessly to the camera or is it connected to a recorder?

  • @yellowbandana Without wires. They use the Azden 105 UPR receiver.

  • just looking at him pouring water on the lens gave me the chills !!

  • excellent review keep up the good work.

  • please do a review of pro nikon lens and a cheaper nikon lens

  • اقديتم في تيه العدسه

  • MORE L VS NON L!!! :D awesome video!!

  • also..what camera did you shoot this on?

  • @youR3tard 5dmkii

  • wow, video was nicely made!

    you're a great narrator too!

  • do u ever have problems where the L lens will not focus at all one something but letting go and repressing the shutter halfway will make it work? i just got my 100mm L today and im not sure if its having problems

  • pls do wide angle L lenses and non L lenses.

  • yeah.. more more!!

  • When he was juggling them both, and toggling the stabiliser switch of the L lens while holding it in one hand and shaking it, I was screaming.

  • How about EF 85mm f1.2L vs EF 85mm f1.8L

  • when he pours the water on the lens i just was

"OMFG DONT DO THAT ,PLS !!!!"

  • dude kai you are great, enjoy watching your videos even when i have no interest in the product ( in a non gay manner lol)

  • How about a L vs. non-L:

EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM VS. EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM

Spec vice these two lenses are very simular, so does the L in title and the red ring make any difference?

THUMBS UP IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE THIS!

  • @DaSkaterMunk

    L vs non-L vs DO:

EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 L IS USM vs. EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM vs. EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM

    How about that?

  • This is exactly the kind of info I need. Keep it up!

  • Weatherproofing is great if your camera is weatherproofed as well. However the stabilizer is nice. Yet another great review. Thanks

  • Got my 100 L today and after mounting it up to my 7D, I am blown away.

  • 24-105 l vs non l

  • Sony 75-300 vs. CZ 70-300 G

  • can we see a Canon 100-400L vs. 400L prime? or 2X II vs. 2X III? cool video! ...... even though i will make it a point to keep my L out of rain - and away from people with water bottles!

  • I was interested in the macro L lens because it should be much sharper image shots than the non L but from this review it definately is not $500 worth of sharpness which would be the reason for me buying it. rather disappointing to say the least .

  • LOL.

08:54 "Lok's spelling is OK bad."

  • give as canon 70-200 2.8 IS mark ll vs nikon 70-200 2.8 VR mark ll

  • next time can record mandarian 1?

  • @frommanhattan42

But what is the idea of buying a fixed lens? Is it better than a zoom? I love the black one with the red cirkel on it, but that's only because it looks cool. If it can't zoom it doesn't matter. What would I use it for? :-/

    Btw. Thanks for answering. ;-)

  • @TheeMusicPlayer Fixed lenses work well in very low light situations while most zoom lenses work poorly in low light. Fixed lenses are better for taking portraits because it gives a very shallow depth of field and creates nice smooth bokeh in the backdrop of your model. If you only tend to shoot landscapes and nature stick with your zoom lenses. If interested in low light and portraits try a fixed lens...range from 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.4, and even the 105 2.8 are good.

  • @TheeMusicPlayer

MisterBokeh has already given most of the information base on your question. well the fixed lens (prime lens) is not necessary better than the zoom. In most case the prime lens is shaper and faster focus compare to any zoom lens. you can use your prime lens for basically anything. from portrait, landscape, party or macro if you are using the macro prime lens. prime lenses come from a wide range, from very wide to super long range. you just need to pick one that is good for u.

  • @frommanhattan42

sorry ran out of space, and about you were saying that you like the one has a "red ring" the Canon lenses that has a red ring on are called Canon L lens. which with high quality built, weather sealing (dust and water proof) with better result and detail in photo. of course with all this goodies the price is more expensive compare to the non L lens. Usually the L lens is cost somewhere around $800 to $2000 US dollar., prices are depends on the model.

  • nice video hope to see more!

  • MORE L VS. NON L!

  • I don't get it. Those lenses does not have the ability to zoom, or what?

  • @TheeMusicPlayer

No, can't zoom! The lens that can't zoom is called prime lens, which mean the focal length is fixed. the 100mm macro lens here is one of them. what you see through the view finder is what it is, you need to step in or out if you need to zoom ;)

  • Give us more L vs. non L tests please.

  • is english ur first language :O if not how and when did u learn it :O:O

  • Great way to simulate artificial rain! DigitalRev style!

  • can u provide AF accuracy test for 5d mark II vs 1Ds mark III (centre AF point & outer AF point) for both static subject (portrait) & moving object please.. Thanks
