  • Hey dude, nice video. I got a question though: what scale/mode is best for getting that funk/jazz kind of sound?

    cheers

  • What are these riffs? I'd appreciate a song list if they exist. Otherwise, that is some incredibly awesome original funk shit.

  • man I play guitar but......you are brill love funk heavy bassssssssssssss!!!!!!!!

  • you a bad mother.......when you givin a concert????really...you're good!!!!

  • wow...i'm glad that i play a p bass too, that's just so badass and awesome

  • @Martyr9991 well with emgs i can dial in more dirt on my amp i tested two basses side by side same model same woods same passive tone control and i found i could dial in the dirt i wanted better with emgs and keep the tone i like and it was on a straight p bass and using a preamp isnt my thing i prefer passive tone control on the bass and let my amp do the eq and add dirt

  • coolness i will say that a good bass to begin upgrading is a rogue lx200 series bass its a decent bass out of the box might need setting up but since its a cheap off brand you dont have to worry about hacking up an original btw i have a rogue lx205b

  • love the funk man how would you rate these pickups for metal i got a 5 string with pj pickups and i wanna swap em out for the emgs

  • @summerson1 they gonna work great, a lot of metal bands use 'em. Keep it brutal.

  • @summerson1 depends what metal your goin for. if your goin for a very aggressive sound i suggest emg DC40 but my favorite bassist Steve Harris of Iron Maiden uses a pbass and is insane with it. personal preference to be honest.

  • @Martyr9991 im lookin for a thrash tone with a good bite im kinda limited with choices cuz its a 5 string pj and someone suggested barts which are good pickups but too clean for my tastes not the tone i like

  • @summerson1 well EMG have very clean-sounding pickups but they can sound aggressive. and if you set your bass to lean on the J pickup it will sound more aggressive.

  • All I hear is the battery. A great P bass does not need a battery to sound funky.

  • @bohs1984 I guess most of the Patrice Rushen cuts feat. Reddie Freddie Washington ain't funky to your hears then

  • @SlikkTim Not as good as if they had been recorded with a striaght up P bass sound. Hey, it's your bass, make it sound however you want. I just don't think it sounds ANYTHING like a p bass once you go with a battery.

  • @SlikkTim Shit the sound of your bass is fantastic. And fantastic playing!!

  • there#s a real Old GrandMasters feel coming from you . life's to short to live in a hole so bust into your FUNky-est stroll .1 love slikk

  • I really like this tone and your slapping is ace. I have an SD curlee bass, do you think if I install these same pick ups it will sound somewhat close? It already takes precision bass pick ups. Which EMGs did you use?

  • @themanamp basic EMG P ones, I'm pretty sure it'll sound similar. Emgs have a cool tendancy to "bypass" the bass tone and replace it with the "emg sound". Love it.

  • amazing play dude. but actually the tone is coming from your fingers :)

  • very good!!!!!

  • nice Jam man!

  • worst P sound ever heard.

  • comin' up in the world, huh ?

  • i actually think the tone sounds very good. better than my p-bass at least. very funky

  • EMG in a Fender? Youre a MURDERER!

  • I know. Killing on bass is my profession.

  • I think its awesome :3

  • Wow, that's a humble comment.

  • Hell yeah, I'm the humblest guy in the world ! xD

  • Are those the EMG PHZ? Thinking 'bout getting them... but not quite sure yet...

  • EMG P with 9v battery, no preamp.

  • Congratulations, very good job man.

  • Bad-ass jam man!

  • Sick!!!!! Fantastic as usual. All of your videos are great. I know how your bass is setup (pickups and strings), But you use compression. Is there any way you could demo the bass without compression? You have me so interested in the EMG pickups. Your tone is the absolute best p-bass sound I have ever heard.

  • Do you feel the funk coming out of your speakers??

  • groovy

  • wow! envy!

  • Ha, seriously. I'm green right now! Some of the best slap I've heard on here.

  • Killer GROOVE

    you^re the man

  • You dont have the tabs for this huh?

  • Very impressive. This jam is my favorite.

  • Me 2!!! ITs so good!

  • goddamn man sounds sooo nice:D killer sound dude:D:D nice jam too ofcourse

    ;)

  • yeah funk thats pick ups sound great

  • yeah slap that bass!

  • How did you do the EQ in this one?

Sounds pleasantly vintage for active EMG pickups!

  • woooooooooo motherfucker that´s freaking funky, you have the fucking louis jhonson soul, keep doing this funky stuff.

  • thats funky as hell!!

  • Jump to it... he he ;)

  • At least ! :D

  • you're killer! marvellous!

  • the bass that you play is emg p-bass pickup?/

  • joliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiie

  • nice tone, nice funk ;)

  • Nice hat.

  • Your Get on the Floor Jackson play-along reeled me in, (I learned to play it from watching you,) and this roll sealed the deal.

    Subscribed.

  • Yo its me again..checking you out some more,

MASHING IT DOWN AGAIN...I FEELING YOU..BIG UP

    ALL THE WAY FROM LONDON

  • You a Mean Man SlikkTim!!! Funky to da bone!! You just can't imitate real funk. You musta grew up listening to Bootsy Collins, and The Brothers Johnson and dem Cats! I'm a keyboard player, and I would love to jam with someone with your skills. Keep real funk alive playa!

  • yeah....funk...thats cool !

  • lavora lavora.. stai bene a suonare come marlow..

poi..sto fender precison mi sa di made in mexico..?

mha.. un po ignorante come groove..

    ciao!

  • no no, il nostro amico qui sulle corde ci dà dentro come un forsennato. E poi chi se ne frega di dove è stato made in, basta che suoni funky ! bravissimo !!

  • very funky jam man, keep it up

  • you are great

  • You don't have Victor Wooten's chops - GOOD! I love this kind of slapping - just funky and to the point, and you know how to leave space in your lines. I'm tired of hearing guys rattle of lighting-fast quadruplets when all that's needed is some solid, fat BASS. Your timing is really good, my man - keep it comin'. You wouldn't be a Me'shell fan, would you?

  • Actually when I started out, I learned Wooten's "Me And My Bass Guitar" cause it was rather cool and everybody was trying to play it.Then I started doing the oldschool(real !) thing, and I liked so much I completely stopped playing wooten licks. As for Me'Shell I know some of her bigger tunes, but never really listened her albums that much. So much good music, so little time :)

  • Well, my friend, you most definitely have to check out "Plantation Lullabies" (Me'shell's first album). I think you'd really like her playing - she's certainly one of the funkiest people to come out of the nineties. But you're right - there's a lot of good stuff out there and it's not easy to fit it all in!

  • Your tone is priceless. oh..and ofcourse the entire piece is amazing. Good job.

  • ur not even playing

  • My pleasure :)

  • nice man. real nice... one day il be as good as you i hope..

  • practice makes perfect. And one day i'll be as good as the guys 10x better than me I hope xD

  • i know it duz but no matter how hard i practice, il never have a hat that cool...LOL

nah man keep doin your thing its awsome to watch someone funk the shizzle out of ther bass...

Keep up the good work buddy!

  • ive noticed that the majority that post these kind of vids post em just 2 show people how good they r........but u looked like u were acctually enjoyin it..........thats just my opinion :)

  • Well thanks. Actually I thought I was lookin' too serious on this one lol. I'm just enjoying myself, maybe I'll post some lessons when I have the time.

  • I'm using the Neve preamp of the Line6 Toneport. So it's like, no amp. I use webstrings Stainless Steels 50-110. Lighter gauge is easier on the hands and let you play faster but I like to have as much weight as possible in the notes I play.

  • All I can say tis marvolous :]

I been playing bass for a few years now..

Hmmm I like the EMG pickups

I prefer the Seymour Duncans for the rockish

sound tho, tis what I use in my band :]

  • nice tone! I like the groove in it!

    Keep it up

  • favorite'd

dude,,, how do i master the scales....?

  • 99% of this is based on the E minor pentatonic. Google it, learn it, practice it, enjoy it, and hopefully in the end master it :)

  • how did you do the progression? i kinda liked the riff on 0.21

  • I dunno man it's just some jammin, I played what I felt like like playin without following any chord progression... practice and play with soul :)

  • 5 stars to you man.

any recommended readings? songs to listen to?

  • @SlikkTim Get a band together. You are much too good to not be famous right now. That tone was dirty and those riffs were all amazing. FUNKY!!!

  • i love the e minor pent

  • i'm bassist and i have a jazz bass and i want a good bright tone. which pickups should i get EMG or Seymour Duncan?

  • Well it's different, EMG has that "active thing", wich is super powerfull and bright, but you gotta get a 9volt battery. To me the Seymour Duncans have a somewhat more rock-ish, dirtier sound. Check MunkyBarz's video he uses Seymours on a Jazz.

  • I like the crisp pop sound!

  • Thanks, I have the sound I always wanted ! Sort of a mix of 90% precision 10% Musicman. Brand new heavy steels sure helps too though. ^^

  • very nice!!

    you rock!!

    keep going!

  • ver good surprise not more viewers

  • Thanks ! I don't really care about the "views count" you know. If those who view it enjoy it and/or can learn something, it's all right with me. ^^

  • nice man, when i clicked on this from marlowe's video i was expecting yet another guy who has little talent just posting videos (marlowe not being one of them obviously), but man u really have some groove keep it up

  • wow you have a very big talent, your groove is awesome , and you have a fucking good rythm ^^ sorry for my approximativ english (i'm belgian ^^)

  • Hey man, appreciate it. Can't say nothin' about your english since i'm french heheh (and not very far from belgium at that, I live in Nancy ^^)

  • hey man thats cool shit. first off, love the clockwork orange hat hahaha. you def know how to rock that shit. give my vids a look, i just put on my 2nd improv slap vid youd prob like it from what im seeing here. keep on rockin bro

  • Thanks bro. p-bass funksters, unite ! Too bad my sweat kills the strings in a few hours when I play like this... oh well, funk's funk I guess ^^
