@Martyr9991 well with emgs i can dial in more dirt on my amp i tested two basses side by side same model same woods same passive tone control and i found i could dial in the dirt i wanted better with emgs and keep the tone i like and it was on a straight p bass and using a preamp isnt my thing i prefer passive tone control on the bass and let my amp do the eq and add dirt
coolness i will say that a good bass to begin upgrading is a rogue lx200 series bass its a decent bass out of the box might need setting up but since its a cheap off brand you dont have to worry about hacking up an original btw i have a rogue lx205b
@summerson1 depends what metal your goin for. if your goin for a very aggressive sound i suggest emg DC40 but my favorite bassist Steve Harris of Iron Maiden uses a pbass and is insane with it. personal preference to be honest.
@Martyr9991 im lookin for a thrash tone with a good bite im kinda limited with choices cuz its a 5 string pj and someone suggested barts which are good pickups but too clean for my tastes not the tone i like
@summerson1 well EMG have very clean-sounding pickups but they can sound aggressive. and if you set your bass to lean on the J pickup it will sound more aggressive.
@SlikkTim Not as good as if they had been recorded with a striaght up P bass sound. Hey, it's your bass, make it sound however you want. I just don't think it sounds ANYTHING like a p bass once you go with a battery.
I really like this tone and your slapping is ace. I have an SD curlee bass, do you think if I install these same pick ups it will sound somewhat close? It already takes precision bass pick ups. Which EMGs did you use?
@themanamp basic EMG P ones, I'm pretty sure it'll sound similar. Emgs have a cool tendancy to "bypass" the bass tone and replace it with the "emg sound". Love it.
Sick!!!!! Fantastic as usual. All of your videos are great. I know how your bass is setup (pickups and strings), But you use compression. Is there any way you could demo the bass without compression? You have me so interested in the EMG pickups. Your tone is the absolute best p-bass sound I have ever heard.
You a Mean Man SlikkTim!!! Funky to da bone!! You just can't imitate real funk. You musta grew up listening to Bootsy Collins, and The Brothers Johnson and dem Cats! I'm a keyboard player, and I would love to jam with someone with your skills. Keep real funk alive playa!
no no, il nostro amico qui sulle corde ci dà dentro come un forsennato. E poi chi se ne frega di dove è stato made in, basta che suoni funky ! bravissimo !!
You don't have Victor Wooten's chops - GOOD! I love this kind of slapping - just funky and to the point, and you know how to leave space in your lines. I'm tired of hearing guys rattle of lighting-fast quadruplets when all that's needed is some solid, fat BASS. Your timing is really good, my man - keep it comin'. You wouldn't be a Me'shell fan, would you?
Actually when I started out, I learned Wooten's "Me And My Bass Guitar" cause it was rather cool and everybody was trying to play it.Then I started doing the oldschool(real !) thing, and I liked so much I completely stopped playing wooten licks. As for Me'Shell I know some of her bigger tunes, but never really listened her albums that much. So much good music, so little time :)
Well, my friend, you most definitely have to check out "Plantation Lullabies" (Me'shell's first album). I think you'd really like her playing - she's certainly one of the funkiest people to come out of the nineties. But you're right - there's a lot of good stuff out there and it's not easy to fit it all in!
ive noticed that the majority that post these kind of vids post em just 2 show people how good they r........but u looked like u were acctually enjoyin it..........thats just my opinion :)
Well thanks. Actually I thought I was lookin' too serious on this one lol. I'm just enjoying myself, maybe I'll post some lessons when I have the time.
I'm using the Neve preamp of the Line6 Toneport. So it's like, no amp. I use webstrings Stainless Steels 50-110. Lighter gauge is easier on the hands and let you play faster but I like to have as much weight as possible in the notes I play.
Well it's different, EMG has that "active thing", wich is super powerfull and bright, but you gotta get a 9volt battery. To me the Seymour Duncans have a somewhat more rock-ish, dirtier sound. Check MunkyBarz's video he uses Seymours on a Jazz.
nice man, when i clicked on this from marlowe's video i was expecting yet another guy who has little talent just posting videos (marlowe not being one of them obviously), but man u really have some groove keep it up
hey man thats cool shit. first off, love the clockwork orange hat hahaha. you def know how to rock that shit. give my vids a look, i just put on my 2nd improv slap vid youd prob like it from what im seeing here. keep on rockin bro
Hey dude, nice video. I got a question though: what scale/mode is best for getting that funk/jazz kind of sound?
cheers

What are these riffs? I'd appreciate a song list if they exist. Otherwise, that is some incredibly awesome original funk shit.

All I hear is the battery. A great P bass does not need a battery to sound funky.

@bohs1984 I guess most of the Patrice Rushen cuts feat. Reddie Freddie Washington ain't funky to your hears then

99% of this is based on the E minor pentatonic. Google it, learn it, practice it, enjoy it, and hopefully in the end master it :)

how did you do the progression? i kinda liked the riff on 0.21
