  • FANTÁSTICO!!

  • i can't believe i went to her concert and other concerts but i was never interested bc i was little. now, im interested but i dont go anymore lol. sad.

  • The best one !

  • i like her voice....if she improves her acting she is going to be well known!

  • @Milylily4Ever She is well known she has the most views on Youtube next to Cecilia Bartoli when it comes to classical music!!!

  • @Milylily4Ever this is 1990 performance. about 20 years ago. in fact her acting is very natural nowadays.

  • @icylakepaxphile haha thanks ...actually i love her

  • skillful and brilliant sound

  • 1:05 - 1:36 That is just crazy she can pull it off. She she sounds like the damn flute...however the fk she does it...it is mind boggling.

  • @mugengaia Haha, I thought the same thing... "oh my freaking god, she sounds like an instrument!"

  • Musically, this is one of the best I've heard. If you judge by the voice alone. Perfect intonation, articulation. Brava!

  • Wow, I can't believe how clear her high f's are! great work.

  • great voice...!

  • Sumi Jo and Diana Damrau are the best for this song!!!!!!!!!! *_*

  • @IntampestusNox I absolutely agree

  • you can't just say "oh who cares about the acting," opera is acting. you can have perfect technique and a wonderful voice but you still won't be half as good as those you can properly act the role.

  • the greatest voice and the real queen is there

  • here voice is amazing but on stage you have to act as well, Diana wins every time merely because even if she doesn't hit a note perfectly you are just blown away by her performance anyway!

  • wow her german is good!!!

  • great voice

  • i don't care about acting....

    she's sounds simply sensational

wish i can hear her live more often

  • The best version ever!

Her voice quality can not be compared with Damrau. Diana Damrau has good acting , but Sumi Jo's technique and given voice is way better than Damrau.

  • never, damrau sings this aria better than her... though sumi jo, damrau and dessay are the only living sopranos who can sing this well

  • @kirstinberklee a shame the sound and pic is not perfect :'(

  • awesome aria...

  • That sounds so... easy. ^^ What a great voice, but that role needs a lot more acting.

  • The fact that she is Korean and pulling that off in German, it's really amazing. However, I think Diana plays it better, not because of voice but cause of posture and acting

  • You are absolutely right!!!

  • Forget the acting. Making this sound easy is unbelievable.

  • Sumi's voice is incredible, her acting here not so great- And anyone saying that mozart composed this to be sung not acted needs to consider the times. Opera and plays were the Movies of the day. Mozart composed plenty of music that was not in a opera format - that didn't need to be acted. The queen of the night is a character and a role not just a voice part. If it were just a voice part, her name would be Soprano. This takes nothing from Sumi's great voice- and her F is great.

  • Indeed, but Mozart's Operas where a lot better than any of the crap that they call movies that come out today. Here is great music, story-telling and emotion. Mozart took the best parts of almost every different form of opera and created some of the most expressive peices of music ever, let alone Operas. It is true that the Queen is a character, but if it were just a voice part with would be called colortura soprano with strong tessitura.

  • in the future, we will only get robots to sing and they'll do perfect Fs each time... I think Damrau owns part 2 because of her power. But I like Sumi's F in part 1 because she could be much more subtle..

  • yes. damrau may be better in sumi but not in terms of f. no other woman has a clearer and more stable than sumi's f.

  • As much as I love Sumi Jo and her amazing voice, Damrau's interpretation as the Queen of the Night is unbeatable to this date. But Jo's still amazing as usual.

  • but this song, she is still the best as her f is perfect. remember what karajan said? there are only three people in the world who can sing this perfectly. one of them is sumi jo

  • Who are the names of the other two, please?

  • Comment removed

  • whoa she is good...yeh the acting is poor...but damn...she gave me goosebumps! O_O really awesome close to beating Diana...

  • she may not have the acting I do accept it,but her f's sound way better than diana's...

  • @lateralex90

No way! Her high notes are much more suited to Bell Song. They aren't heavy enough for this.

  • damrau definitely has the acting and the powerhouse voice, much more than sumi jo. but i mean, come one, this is pretty spectacular too. sumi jo is pretty incredible.

  • in my opinion it is a very poor interpretation, no real feeling . this is not queen of the night

  • who are you to judge??? let's see you sing this. maybe you'll appreciate her more if you knew how hard this song is

  • ehem.. this is not about the acting.. it's about the voice... Mozart composed this song to be sung not to act! acting is hust an extra.. the voice is much more important..

  • I honestly don't care about how technically great a singer is unless I believe them. I think that's the most important thing. There should be a balance between passion and technique. No one in their right mind would be singing this aria unless they were technically capable (Sumi Jo!! <3) But that's no excuse for not keeping in mind what you're singing about.

  • Sumi Jo is a perfect soprano!

But Diana Damrau is both a soprano and an actress and in this role, I must admit, Diana Damrau is the best, she lives this music and text but not just sings

  • her f is way better and stable than damrau. this is not my opinion. her f is so far the best among all the soprano

  • i dont know ppl. but i think the best siner for this performance is Diana Damrau!!!

i mean shes not bad but nothing against Diana. anyway good job!

  • you know guys..... edda has more power in her vocal cords... but sumi jo has that control.. that makes it sound more melodic...

  • The Queen of the Night is asking her daughter to kill someone. She is really upset; this is not about singing beautiful of "melodic". I think a stronger voice suits better for this piece and in general for the character.

Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen

Hell's vengeance boils in my heart

  • Untrained eyes cannot tell the difference between one's acting ability and directoriral concepts. Even within the context the director created in this, Sumi Jo obviously could not fill it up with her acting. First, she cannot even stand still on stage, ACTING101. Secondly, she cannot walk as her character, if there is any. Thirdly, she fails to deliver her lines as enraged Queen of the night! Such a shame that there are people here thinking others are nuts when they have different opinions.

  • but still.. her voice is great... i think she surpassed edda mosser

  • God given voice. Too bad no acting talent at all. I wonder why she doesn't learn from other singers or actors how to act. Go see Diana Damrau's Queen of the Night. Sumi, your role here is the QUEEN ordering her daughter to kill! Not a whorehouse MADAM asking one of her new girls to do something kinky with a pistol to her customers.

  • sayssll sai sumi is japanese i am about faint. a lot of peole think that she is japanense because she looks like a japanese and her name is like a japanese( i do not think so). her real name is su kyung jo

  • she is in fact korean :)

  • Amazing!!

  • o.O

    sumi jo is asian?

  • yes =D

  • She is Korean :)

  • She is Korean :)

  • I don't like Sumi Jo singing pieces with long notes, because she has such a strong vibrato and an relatively open voice. But for this piece she's really really perfect! Wonderful!!! Best interpretation of this I've ever heard!

  • haaaaa... funny german. they made mincemeat of it. :D but all in all she's really gorgeous !!!

  • LOL funny german im with u sounds like fu*&^% Japanese LOL!!!

  • it only she acted more, she'd be absolutely brilliant.

  • her acting might be not good but she is one of the most best opera singer and best for this song ( i also think this way. experts say that she is the best.)

  • On the other hand, many an opera singer does what is known as "park and bark", they stand stock still and do their thing, hoping for the best effect, but without sufficient training to do the dramatic role any justice. this is tragically common, alas.

  • go and do it for yourself

  • I love how you used your "singing and directing" status to pretty much state a racist comment. *sarcastically /angrily rolls eyes*. It's people like you who keeps the world from progressing into a culturally excepted and RESPECTED place.

  • A pathetic comment xD

  • woww she`s really good (: It`s just she doesnt show much emotion... it`s a angry song.. but she sings beautifuly the high notes <3

  • wooo¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • Incroyable, mais il est vrai que très peu d'émotion passe. ça ne gâche en rien la perfection de la voix de Sumi Jo...

  • Voice of Deity/Voice of Devil. It must be one of two.

  • Even the Morons who started to clap half way through recognised quality when they heard it.

    convaincu... Donc voila.

  • wow!

one of the best version I've heard!

  • Her voice is too light for the role, but the technique is fab.

This production is close to 20 years old, and I feel that the call for acting in opera is a more recent movement.

  • Sumi jo! she is really amaizing!

    Amazingly beautiful voice!

  • In welcher Sprache wird die Arie eigentlich hier gesungen?

  • Auf Deutsch natürlich...ich hab auch ein paar Sekunden gebraucht ^^'.

  • HALLO??!! in deutsch vielleicht??? lool

  • I don't like the late nineteenth century setting, but she is MARVELLOUS! Thank you for uploading it.

  • For the ones commenting on the lack of acting...how do you know that the director didn't request that she doesn't act? It is already strange how it is in a 20's theme.

Most professionals would tell you that they would rather sacrifice the acting then to produce a rotton sound. Holyfreakingshit, I agree. Damrau is an acting genious, but her vocals lack where Jo exceeds. What to do, what to do.

    Sublime.

  • Different from recording, opera requires acting, which is the very thing that this performance lacks of

  • Too lyrical for the role...in terms of the actual singing she probably does better than most.

  • too true

  • Hell's revenge burns within my heart, Death and despair Burn all around me! If through you Sarastro does not suffer death, You are no longer my daughter, For ever be disowned, For ever be abandoned, for ever shall he destroyed All the ties of nature. Disowned,Abandoned And destroyed All the ties of nature. If you do not secure Sarastro's death!Hear me ye gods of vengeance! Hear the mother's curse!
  • Wonderful performance. The coloratura is perfect. I also love Dessay's performance. Damrau lacks a bit of something that these other two ladies bring to the piece. Beautiful.

  • Sumi JO is a The Nigth's Queen in this Opera...but, really she is Midas' Queen...all everything that touches (sings) is transformed into gold ... .. uff wonderful .... beautiful way in which God sends his angels at the earth, as comment on another video .... incredible Sumi Jo!!!

  • Sumi Jo....der neue Stern am Opernhimmel für

    Koloratursopran-Rollen!!!

  • i agree with brenda1b2c3.

My fiance' has this documentary she got from her school about her profile. Actually...on multiple times she is asked not to act so everyone can take advantage of her technical advantage -vocally. Some can act like Damrau, but you notice damrau is a crappy singer. Most professionals prefer the vocal advantage for some reason. Sorry Damrau fans. I love her 2.

  • superb singing

  • awesome

  • o fak!!! jakie wokalizy... ja tez tak chce :D:D

  • hahaha ancient recording, you can hear alien sounds in the background

  • a quién se le ocurre aplaudir en medio de la aria...

  • Sumi jesteś wielka, pięknie!

  • She sings so good, but she hat forgoted to actuing, she would speak with her doughter, and she look out the public and her tochter ist lonely...

  • You should realize that there are cherographers behind the scene. They tell the actors and actress what to do.

  • wtf.... id like to know if you can sing that song. I have met only one person who can sing the song, if the acting isnt so good who cares it is the singing and the coloratura of the song that makes it good. She is the best that i have heard sing it.

  • I don't agree with you here. In general I don't like the 'well I'd like to see you do better' argument.. We are here criticizing professionals based on comparison with other professionals, not with ourselves. same goes to football, soccer, and anything else where people absentmindedly say that the pro is 'crappy'-let them have it, obviously they can't do better or they'd be playing in the major leagues.

  • very very good!!

  • She has an amazing voice! Great job!! Bravo!

  • ....it wouldve been smarter of you to leave a constructive comment, rather than a comment remarking "SHE IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH".... if you can go to her standards then your just ignorant

  • I have to admit the acting is not good but her voice is Incredible 2:16 is quite difficult and she executed it incredibly i love her hahaha

  • check out dianna damrau queen of the night ll

now shes awesome she portrays the character perfectly and her voice magnifque

  • oh my god......

  • FANTASTIC, ASTONISHIN voice and technique! She sing this aria nearly perfectly! BUT she's not an actres. Queen of the Night is wicked and emotional person. So she should act more expressively.

  • Sumis Stimme hätte einen besseren Regisseur verdient, ein besseres Publikum, das nicht zwischenrein klatscht und eine bessere Aufnahme.

Sumis voice deserves a better Regisseur, a better publicum (which applaudes not at the wrong time), and a better recording.

  • You know I actually think her acting wasn't that bad, it was a more stand-offish, cold interpretation, but still good.

  • WOW! Perfekt!!!!

  • Amazing. Sumi Jo proves once again why, for listening pleasure, her Queen is my favorite. Such depth and control. As is typical for Sumi Jo, more acting would have been appreciated, so that I didn't feel I was watching a concert performance. Still, I'd buy a ticket for Sumi Jo before any other Queen.

  • people can't help but clap in the middle of the song...truly, amazing amazing pitch. she has technicallity advantage than any other sopranoes. According to London Opera Group she is the only one that can perfect such aria. She truly owns this.

  • Actually, they clapped because she was had turned her back to the audience and was quiet at the time thus they thought she was done.

    But she is awesome.

  • great thanxforupload.

  • She nailed it.

  • ..oops, I guess my first comment wasn't posted.

I basically was amazed by her amazing-ness. lol.

  • My first response was correct. But reading ppl's comments I do have to admit her acting is pretty bad -_-;;;

But that's why she's better known as an amazing singer right?

  • Wow - fine voice, excellent technic! lovely!

  • Superb!

  • the best in the world

  • beautiful performance. astounding!

  • she's simply amusing, even if I think she've done better other times, especially in the filato

  • the voice is the best... but... the interpretation... the scene... wasn't good!

i prefer her voice on Bel Raggio Lusinghier

  • Sumi Jo is the best in this role!

  • Sami jo is a great soprano, but this isn't her role.

  • Sumi Jo es, probablemente, la mejor interprete de esta aria!

  • to this day, sumi jo is the only performer I have seen that does this aria at the correct tempo, I prefer Damrau, but she does it a little slow.

    Gracias

  • Escucha Edda Moser para mi ella es la verdadera Queen of the Night

  • Damrou's performance is very good. She is like Marilyn Manson. Sumi Jo has better voice quality though...she and moser has the technicality advantage, and perfect tempo progressiveness whenever they reach the F note...but all-in-all, they are all great...that's why we watch them here on you tube.

Not like me...a tenor that has no use...never took it too seriously. Just did it for college scholarship.

  • Srmacoy I agree with you. Sumi's performance is the best.

  • i told you freaks that diana damrau's is way better it's on youtube, she's in the all black costume

  • I've listened to every version of this on the site and have decided this is the best technical performance. If only it could be combined with Dessay's acting it would be perfect!

  • oh my goodness what a voice

  • in inglish please...

  • Wow. this is fantastic. Not only is it a nice tempo, with no sign of strain, she hits all the notes, her voice is round and full even on the high parts. The recording quality is awful, but she can sure sing. If there's a better recording out there, I'd sure like to hear it.

  • thanks uploading " smoothiw".i've been looking for this. finally i find it. im korean.

  • she may be have a nice voice... but she dont know how to act... she limits her self to singing... queen of the nigth is evil... i dont see nothing evil in this performance...

  • I'll forgive her her acting. This song is physically exhausting. Staying upright for the duration is a feat in and of itself. I've heard other sopranos sing this and the temptation to show off is incredible. She at least kept to the strict meaning of the peice.

  • Ditto!

  • This is a wonderful performance! Sumi Jo is marvelous!

But what's with the Berthold Brecht looking set?

  • The costumes are atrocious, but the voices are heavenly!! Brava!!

  • my god why are the costumes so terrible?

  • I want her in my opera!!!

  • a perfect handling of the voice.. in such hurry.. could you imagine that? in a crowded opera-house.. huh!

  • the only two girls that can do it perfect are Summi jo and elizabeth swartkopf.Sound great.

  • she's amazing!

  • By no means do I say this to be negative, but less attention was placed on the acting because of the "cautiousness" of singing...watch her hands and notice how she "conducts" her breathing and is "fingering" the notes with the right hand. I say Brava! Whatever gets the job done!!!

  • AAAHAHAHAHA all i could think of while she was all 'tod und verzweiflung flammet um mich her' is 'flames....on the side of my face.....heaving...breathless...heaving...'

oh, madeline kahn, i miss you.

  • oh my god i was thinking the exact same thing

  • Brilliant vocal performance, but as virtuostic as she is, I'm just not feeling the rage! ;)

  • that's true.

  • Marvelous!

  • One of the best performers (of this aria and opera in general) ever. Wonderful!

  • not bad, not bad...but serra is much better...seen sumi jo myself, not confincing(but that's only my opinion)...the high F's arenT' "clean" but she's very good...*impressed*

  • i´m japanese why???

  • Sumi Jo... My Favorite Soprano.. T-T

    I love her voice..

  • the woman is stunnin for Christs sake!!!!

  • one of mozarts finest

  • The best i've heard yet!!!

  • Lol F problems... After seeing that interview where she says she hates this song because she has to practice 2 hrs/day just for that F I can imagine her thinking "Damn that F!!! Grrr"

  • hahaha "Damn that F!!! Grrr" i laughed a lot.

  • What a voice

  • Sumi Jo is KOREAN!?!?!?!!?!?!?

  • yes

  • Yes she's korean.

  • her voice was beautiful, though a little breathy in parts that shouldn't have been.. her acting was also not so great..

  • it looks like a modern way to represent Der Hölle Rache ehehe its funny see a japanese girl sing this germany piece its so cool´ besides i´m from japan and we can do everything ahahaha joke

  • She's not Japanese but Korean!!!!
