The prevailing opinion here in Canada, as far as I can tell anyways is that marriage is a legal contract offered by the state and that churches are allowed to perform religious marriage ceremonies if they so choose but the state is still primary since they need a state issued marriage license even if they're getting married in a church. Our courts determined that calling same sex marriages something other than marriage was still discriminatory even if they still enjoyed identical legal rights.
I don't understand the distinction between civil unions and marriage, here in Canada the two have always been available to everyone, well in the past only to hetero couples, anyways both are considered marriage except one is performed in a civil ceremony and one is performed in a religious ceremony but both are considered marriage and are of the same status, there are churches here who will perform religious same sex marriages though most gays and lesbians opt for the civil option.
Fabulous love it! Only one thing to pick on! Liverpool is Britain's fourth largest city. Go to wikipedia and type in "List of largest United Kingdom settlements by population" Liverpool is the fourth largest. xxx
I love it ! "Very busy procrastinating. " Finally, someone else understands the fact that effective procrastination can take considerable effort!! It can be very hard work actually and should be considered an art form.
Ponder a moment: can one graduate with a Masters degree in Procrastination ? In theory, is it possible? Just kidding

marriage was formed under religion? what religion? can you tell me what religion invented marriage? What did people do before that?
philipjames33 2 years ago 2
The couple that wants a civil union although they are heterosexual is VERY thought-provoking.
Marriage was formed under religion. If people do not believe in marriage, they ought not have to have the religious counterpart to a union.

Civil marriage has nothing to do with religion.
